I have nipple thrush :crying:
Ok, I've been to the GP, and he has sent me home with Mycostatin Cream to apply to my nipples after feeds, and some Nilstat Oral drops for bubby.
Is the Mycostatin Cream ok for bub to feed after?? He didn't say, and I stupidly forgot to ask. Or should I wash them before a feed? Is there something better I should be taking.
How long does it take to heal, because it is KILLING me :crying: ?

I have no idea about either of those things.
But personally I used Daktarin oral gel. I put it on both before and after feeds since it was supposed to go in bubs mouth anyway.
I personally would put it on AFTER feeds because if it isn't an oral gel it probably wouldn't be a good idea to let bub ingest it.

I'm not sure, but I would imagine you would need to wipe it off before a feed.
I agree with PP - daktarin oral gel is great....you can use it on your nipples and in their mouth.
Either way, I would always notice improvement within 24 hours. Did your gp mention that you should continue to use the stuff after your symptoms have cleared?? Can't remember how long for....but if you don't it will just keep coming back.
Good luck....and hugs.....it's bloody painful and just a pain in the bum!!

I'd go the Daktarin too. It cleared up bubs mouth when he got it quite quickly(few days). As for your nipples:confused: I can only assume the same time.
Hope it clears soon
oh you poor bugger that is sooo painful I had it with DD2 the pain was awful!!!
I too used the Daktarin oral gel and it only took a day or two from memory to clear up. DD had it in her mouth too my SIL picked it up before I noticed it.
All the best

I feel your pain
As if breastfeeding isn't hard enough without that added pain.
Anyway, daktarin gel is fine but doctors have been perscribing other treatments as there was a few cases of babies choking on the daktarin gel (thats what a chn told me in 2007 when I had my 2nd bub). But I went on to use it again, as long as your sensible and don't shove the whole teaspoon in bub's mouth all at once I don't see how they would choke. And it makes life alot easier knowing that you bubs can safely feed on your nipples even if the gel is left on.

HI I had that with my last pregnancy and i went back to my OB about it she said it is very hard to get rid of the thrush out of the breast tissue i had to have 3 treatments ( of "Diflucan1" one tablet every second day ) normally for vag thrush you just have 1 treatment......so if you can't get rid of it that might be your answer!.......The chemist will say it's not right but the OB and lactation consultant at the hospital said it is the best way.

Thanks for your advice ladies.
Sounds like daktarin gel might be the go - I'll go and chat with the chemist tomorrow.
This is my 3rd bf bub, and my first case of thrush, I can't believe how painful it is
I'm hoping it is not too hard to get rid of.
It can be a bit of a bugger to get rid of but, treated well, can be gone within a week, too.
If it's just nipple thrush at the moment, treat it well before it gets a chance to get intra-ductal.
Apparently increasing your vitamin C intake really helps. It certainly doesn't hurt, so do it anyway. Also, make sure you put some anti-fungal rinse through your wash (during the fabric softener cycle). I only know of the Canestan one and you can get that in the athlete foot treatment aisle of pharmacies.
Inner health plus. Get it from a health food store where it has been kept in a fridge. Take these diligently.
Sunlight. Topless sunbathing if you can manage it will help the healing process along quite significantly. If you can't, at the very least wander around the house topless as airing them out helps, too.
When you are dressed, make sure you keep the nipple/s quite slathered with whatever topical treatment you are using so that you don't stick to your bra and rip the freshly healed bit off when you take your bra off because it got stuck.
Be sure to change your breast pads often as the fungal spores will be on them and will reinfect you.
If your situation is unchanged in a week, see your doctor about getting some Diflucan tablets.
All the best. I hope it clears soon :hugs:
