This is all so confusing...

I am a single Mum and have PHI through Australian Unity which costs $65 a month for hospital cover (no extras). I had my baby in a private hospital and was advised when I was pregnant to make sure bubs was covered too. I called the health fund but they would only offer me family cover which was exactly double the monthly amount which covered myself, my partner and the baby. I said I just wanted cover for me and the baby and they were stumped. They cant offer that, only family cover.

So I didnt get PHI and fortunately nothing went wrong and so DS didnt need the cover. That should be end of story.

Except today I was having my tax return done and the accountant said I needed PHI for bubs - but I'm not quite sure why (I really need to ask more questions). Now I dont know what to do, is there any way of covering bubs without paying for his absent father?

My health fund offers sole parent cover which is cheaper than family cover.

Thanks, I will put it to my Health Fund to offer me that or I will go to another fund that does!

I've got single parent cover through Mutual Community for hospital and extras. The hospital is in case I ever have another baby (hopefully one day!) and the extras is for things like dental, optical, massage, physio etc . Its not cheap - $39.85 a week. Cheaper than family cover which for the same was about $59.00. (although my gap is now $500instead of $200.) Extras cover is needed I think for optical and dental. Extras coveris only about $10 a week I think

None of this is cheap!! Aarrrgghhhhh!!

I have the minimal, for tax, insurance through medibank. It's mainly just extras, as I'd always want to be public for hospital. As Esme doesn't need dental yet I've just got her ambulance at the mo. It'd be good to know what you find is available.
