Hi, no its not too soon to start cleaning their teeth.:D
My Dad was a dentist (retired now) and he was bugging me from the first sign of teeth to start cleaning.
My DD got her first tooth at 5 and 1/2 months and now has 6 teeth (She's almost exactly the same age as your DD). I started using a damp washer to rub her teeth cleen and now we have progressed to a little tooth brush. My DD thinks its a great game! We haven't used any tooth paste yet, Dad says really not necessary at this stage. But when we do use tooth paste he suggested only using a smear on the brush and to wipe it out of her mouth with the damp washer when you're finished as it's not good for them to swallow it. We also use fluoride drops daily. I think if you start young it will instill good habits for later in life!

Mum to Sophie (20/7/05)
I went to see my dentist this monday and asked him about this.
My DD is nearly 9 months and has her two bottom teeth.
He said that I can start brushing her teeth, using a very soft brush or the one you have that slides over your finger and a very small amount of low fluoride toothpaste. This is good practice, as it gets the baby used to having his/her teeth brushed, so :fingerscrossed: it will lead to less battles in the future.
He said to me that I should also give DD fluoride tablets (as I live in Brisbane and we don't have fluoride in our water), which is one/day. You do have to be careful, as too much fluoride, leads to mottling of the teeth.
Most importantly though, he said to me was DIET, DIET, DIET ie don't give children any sugary foods/drinks, as this negates the brushing/fluoride tabs etc. Or if you do, give them only as a special treat, on rare occasions, as this is best for their teeth. Hope this answers your questions.
Great way to start!
It's good to get children used to having something in their mouth from the very start.

Excellent :D
thank you girls. Can you buy fluriode tablets from the dentist?
I only just dab the brush into the paste ever so gently and then make sure I rinse her mouth out as best i can with lots of water on the brush later.
hey Sam .. I didn't just see you at the shops did I? I just met a baby who was born on the 20th july and had 6 teeth .. lol
would be funny if it was YOU!

It was me! I was thinking the same thing driving home!!!!
What a small world.
We obviously live not too far away from each other so I wonder if you're interested in doing coffee and a play date for our girls?
Send me a PM if you do and we can maybe make some plans.
Back to the teeth question, I have both the fluoride tablets and drops. Sophie can't chew the tablets and they take a bit of time to dissolve so I got drops from a chemist on Wickham Terrace (they will make them up for you) and she just takes them off a spoon.

thanks about the drops .. will have to get some. I used to live at Wickham tce doing IUI ..
small world ..wow :D
I was told NOT to use any toothpaste until they reach at least 2 years. The flouride will stain their adult teeth. (Apparantly it stays in their system)
Maybe check with your dentist or do some 'googling' to find out more info.
