Hi everyone
Just a quick question to ask everyone how they sterilize their bottles and teats etc. I have been using milton lately as i find it so easy to drop the bottle/ dummy in straight after use. But recently i have noticed a thin greasy film appearing inside the bottles and i am having trouble getting rid of it. I wash the bottles in hot soapy water before putting in Milton, and obviously change the milton every
24hrs.
Am i doing something wrong?

I don't like milton because either way you look at it, sterile or not it is a chemical based steriliser so I steam sterilise! I have an avent steriliser which goes in the microwave with 200ml of water for 4 minutes. It is quick, simple and fits all types of bottles, not just the avent ones.
I too steam steralise.
I used milton when I first had DD1 but only because I didn't have a microwave, but then I got 1 and a microwave steriliser...best $20 I ever spent! So quick and easy!

For my first two, I used milton for 6mths then stopped as it seemed pointless sterilising things when they were only eating bugs off the floor or crawling everywhere then sucking on theif fingers. Milton smelt and tasted really bad and it was a hassle if we forgot to sterilise bottles and baby was screaming for one.
With DS2, I got a microwave steriliser and it was the best as everything was sterilised in 8mins.
I noticed that greasy film when I was sterilising, so instead of leaving the bottles in there for too long I would only leave them in there for about half an hour and make up however many bottles he would need for the day. That way it was quicker to get the bottle to DS who was screaming for it and that film didn't appear.
I also had to buy more teats because they became really cloudy
I think next time I might buy myself a microwave steriliser, they sound so much easier
Ha , sounds exactly like my situation! When Logan was first born we used Miltons, because we didnt have a microwave (SOMEONE put foil or something in there, ruined it, probably my elderly Grandma)... So we had to buy a new one, and I bought a $20 steriliser from Big W.
Although, I wish I had bought the Avent one because someone else said it only takes 4 minutes, and alot of teats say to sterilise for 4 minutes...
I use the same steriliser and I know the teats say 4 min but I always do them for 8 like it says and have never had a problem with anything!
I used to use Milton and I thought that it was meant to leave a thin film on your stuff and it's not at all harmful to baby. I think it's just saline or something but I could be wrong. I too stopped sterilising when my daughter was picking up everything off the floor and put it in her mouth. Also I use my dishwasher to wash her bottles. I have one of those 2 drawer ones and have the bottom drawer dedicated to her bottles so that food doesn't circulate through them and get stuck in the teats.
:smiliedance:
I started using Milton but I steam sterilise now - I also didnt like the idea of using a chemical, and the cloudy residue it was leaving on teats etc.
I have an avent steam steriliser, I love it!
Every couple of weeks descale with white vinegar and Bob's your uncle!
Tommee Tippee electric steam steriliser, 8 min.
I refuse to use a microwave one, we tested a few in the labs at uni (lots of mums in the class, I was pregnant, we had a 3 hr lab and nothing to do:laughing: ) and the microwave ones did an attrocious job! (tested a tommee tippee avent and I think Lindam microwave and compared to the electric ones)
The bacterial growth on the stuff we put in the microwave ones was so scarey the 3 mums that brought them in left them there and bought electric ones at lunchtime!
I started off with Milton as well but was a bit put off by the chemically smell and the fact that the midwives who showed me how to use it at the hospital told me to wash my hands after using it as it would do nasty things to my skin, but not to wash it before putting the teats in bubs mouth
I use the Avent steam steriliser now

Thanks everyone-
i originally started off using a microwave steriliser (tommee tippee) but then i changed bottles to the pigeon brand and the 300ml bottles dont fit in it which is why i changed to milton- May have to get another one which will fit the other bottles in it!
I too make up all his bottles at once each day so much easier!
Does anyone else use the pigeon peristaltic bottles- is there a steriliser which fits the 300ml bottle in it!!!
Anna
We were using sterilisers mums had brought from home Nea  and one of the microwave ones had just been bought and still didn't do the job like it was supposed to.
It was a microbiology subject, end of semester we had a free subject and were allowed to use the lab for whatever we wanted, the blokes decided to play with the cane toads half the girls just left and a few of us got together and organised a sterilise off  No way I'd put my son at risk for sake of a bit of bench space!

I know with my microwave steriliser that it had a ton of steam come out of it when I took the lid off and the bottles were too hot to touch for ages. If that didn't kill germs, nothing would.

I almost got burnt a few times too, but then I learnt to leave it sitting there for about an hour before taking the top off. Even then it was still warm inside.

Don't know how you are all going to take this, as it may stir things up a bit (not my intentions at all, just putting my situation forward!) but we don't steralise at all.
On advice from the MW at the hospy, the CHN and another nurse from a different hospy they apparently haven't been steralising bottles, teats, dummy's etc for around the past 2 years.
Apparently, Milton doesn't kill the bacteria it claims to and IMO it smells too much like chlorine - and probably tastes just as bad. :barf:
The definately don't recommend microwave steralisers  as it has something to do with the plastic in the steralisers emitting poisoneous gases or something like that. Sorry, not exactly sure the technical details.
All 'professionals' I have spoken to, say all you need to do now is wash in hot/warm soapy water (normal dishes water) and rinse under hot/warm water. You still boil the water for bottles, but no need for any other special treatment.
This has made things sooooo much easier, let me tell you!!!
Has anyone else heard of this? Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I wash my bottles in very hot soapy water (so hot I need rubber gloves) then rinse, sterilize in my avent microwave sterilizer and then fill the bottles with boiling water, I also soak the teats in boiling water, this seems to keep them clear and cleaner.
Maybe i'm a bit paranoid....
