Howdy,
I'm new to all of this, so I apologise if I'm a bit slow on the uptake... Nice to meet you all!

So, a couple of weeks ago, the Gyno confirmed PCOS and she handed over the metformin. I've been slowly building up the dose as instructed and I'm at a tablet in the evening and half a tablet in the morning.
I've been feeling dodgy for a couple of days and I'm wondering if you guys experienced any side effects and what they were... If you don't mind discussing it of course!

Thanx!:bee:

I have been on metformin since June and the only thing I was aware of was running to the toilet to do number 2's a lot (I hadn't been told about starting slowly with it) so the next time I went to the FS he said that I could take 2 a day for a while and then go back up to 3 - I was pretty much over the worst part by then so I just persisted and it calmed down after about 2 weeks. I also started on clomid within a few days of starting metformin, but thankfully I didn't suffer too many ill effects from either:yelclap:.

I hope your side effects are not making life too difficult!

Hey,

I experienced side effects too - Running to the toilet, nausea for a week with each increase.

I found the nausea can be settled by not taking the met in the morning. Take it at lunch and Dinner instead and have something to eat with it.

I have discussed this with a number of met/diabex girls and it seems many of us just cannot stomach it in the morning.

HI,

I have a question about Metformin and Clomid. Does an Ob or Gyn need to prescribe or can your regular GP prescribe these medications for you. I live in Victoria, if that makes any difference.
Thanks

A Gynae can prescribe both, but GPs are only allowed to prescribe Met, because it's primarily used by diabetics or people who are IR, as opposed to Clomid which is used to help you ovulate.

hi ive been on metformin for around 6 months now i got my first af a week after i started and 6 weeks later fell preg:bfp: although i miscarried at 5 weeks i had to restart the metformin then and regained all of the side effects back. they usually only last a week or 2 but the problem is getting past them :) i had a constant mild headache all day every day and the sweats OMG the sweats i felt as though i was melting from the inside. but after 2 weeks they all subsided so bear with it as it does work and for the first time in my life im actually oing regularly.
hope this helps

i started on diabex ER a few weeks ago i started with one tablet for 2 weeks then 2 for 2 weeks etc till im upto 4 tablets a day, i was told to take them at night when i had dinner but i found that if i did this i got the runs really bad and vomiting so i take it a few hours after dinner and dont eat after having it that helps HEAPS.

im upto 3 tablets ATM and have been taking that for 3 days now and havent had a problem on the 3 yet so fingers crossed i dont,as when i first started taking it i would wake up at about 2am every night and vomit and have the runs for about 4 hrs thank god that has stopped i was so tired from it.

do any of you find that its helping you lose weight?

Sorry to hear about your m/c. I took metformin up to 14 weeks as my obgyn advised it. Having looked at the research it seems some studies indicate it reduces the risk of m/c in women with pcos from 60% down to less than 10%, and is considered safe. It helps the embryo bed down in the uterine lining by thickening it up. Good luck for next time:fingerscrossed:

I read that research and when I was first pregnant and my GP wanted to reduce my met I queried it. He said it will be fine. 1 1/2 weeks later was the date my twins hearts stopped beating. I can't say for sure it was the reduction of the met as we all know miscarriages in first pregnancies are very common and the fact they were twins made it a slight bit higher but my Endo insists next time I stay on a high dose until the end of the first trimester. I know some women it is fine to not stay on it but if there is no harm to the foetus I see no harm for me next time.
