Hi
Just thought that I would tell you about what happened to us a few weeks ago .... all was going well with the 3 kids happily playing in the sandpit and I was watching them out of the kitchen window while I made lunch ... suddenly my 14mth old started screaming (nothing like I had ever heard before!!!) I ran out and he was screaming shaking sweating and his eye's were rolling .... I imediatly ran inside and called an ambulance got the other two kids (4 &3) inside and started questioning them about snakes etc .... they said they didn't see anything !!! Checked for puncture marks ....then got my M-I-L to watch the older ones while I jumped in the car to meet the ambo's ( we live at least an hour from the nearest hospital) by this stage he had a temp of about 40C and a rash had spread over his whole body .... cut a very long and traumatic story short ... we met the ambos half way they immediatly called a back up special care ambo they gave him about 7 shots had to revive him twice ...by the time we got to the hospital he was stable (at this stage I hadn't even been able to call my husband to tell him what had happend !!!) We spent the next 48hrs in hospital under observation but he recovered well and is still here to tell (or listen to the story) !!! To make maters worse they next day my M-I-L had to bring in Archie my 3 year old as he had jumped off the veranda and snapped his collarbone in half ... but thats another story !!!! :dizzy::dizzy::dizzy:

I had to guess at first as i had found a nest of them ( a week or so previously) in some plastic chairs that were stored near the sandpit ... I thought that I had got rid of them all ... but kind of knew instintivly that he had been bitten once he started screaming like that !!!! Had pest control out and have sprayed inside and out ... but still very very carefully and now never let the kids play outside alone !!!!

Oh god that's one of my worst nightmares regarding Ava. You poor thing!!
My mum cleaned my patio when she was visiting recently and chided me cos she found a big redback in a black garden pot. :(
She gave me a lesson on what webs to look out for. I'm gonna spray out there once a week i think.

I'm so relieved to hear that you're baby is alright. :hugs:
I have heard that the redback spider bite is a very painful one.
May I ask, Was the bite on the hand? And did you eventually find any puncture marks?
Unfortunately we have these spiders everywhere in our back yard and I am forced to spray surface spray under the chairs etc...

THANK YOU SO MUCH BELLA...for posting this post.
Because you did, I decided to go check all my kids outdoor toys etc and give them a spray.
I couldn't believe it when a huge redback came out of my sons ride on toy, RIGHT WHERE HIS HANDS WOULD GO
So I believe your post was a warning to us all...GO CHECK YOUR OUTSIDE TOYS AND EQUIPTMENT...and give them a good spray...
I thank you SO much...
I hope both your boys are doing well now :)
OMG...what a scarey thing to happen  must have been a frightening experience :hugs:
We have few here...but in our last place (a brand new house in a brand new estate)..the place was litterd with them, mainly in the lattice and under the pot plant lips ...I'd go through the mortien often. Glad we're not there anymore.
We have to watch for wasps here...in the outside plastic toys with little holes ...eek

OMG how scary for you
i'm so glad that your son is alright,
this is my one greatest fear since moving here, all these dangerous creapy crawlies
i'm going to go out and spray everything now
BTW do these spiders have particular webs that I should look out for? being from a country where there are very few dangerous creatures, all this is new to me
Their webs are fine and messy...they like to live under outdoor chairs and tables, pot plants, kids toys and don't forget to look underneath. The redback runs and hides when disturbed, so spray wherever you a messy web.

cool will do
I can see me going through a few cans of spray lol
oh anothe question, what sprays are best of use?
I don't think there is any 'better' spray...just look on the side of the can and make sure it says it 'kills redbacks' :devil6:hehe

Yeah look out for messy webs like the kind you find in pots.
My mum said if I ever see a stray line of web sticking out to the ground its probably a redback.
The tunnel webs are house or garden variety spiders. Thankfully there are no funnel webs in WA. I used to hate those in sydney!
redbacks are tough buggars .. and worse still .. the eggs are basically impossible to 'kill' unless you find them and SQUASH Them ..
we got our house sprayed by the Hitman companyt .. on the basis that they have a 12 month guarantee on everything .. spiders included ...
I loathe redbacks ... buy the concentrated OUTSIDE sprays .. and go to town ..
redbacks like to hide in LITTLE cornres and holes .. so look under EVERYTHING .. and in the CORNERS of tables etc..

Ewww I read this last night and after skin crawling all night went out and sprayed our plastic chairs that I've been sitting on with 11 wo DD. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH 100s of tiny baby spiders came out after lots more sprays big fat mumma redback drunkenly came out and a few smaller ones. I am major arachnophobic and my hair is still on end.
oh and I will be getting DH to spray the wheely bins or I will never take garbage out again! (ours are covered in webs).
