Hi i have just found out that i am pg and was wondering which pregnancy vitamin was the best and how different they are from each other. I took blackmores with DS1 and they seemed fine. Just after some different opinions

Thanks

Hi Kylie - congratulations!

I too took Blackmores, but from what my midwife told me they are all fairly similar.

Enjoy the pregnancy!

CONGRATULATIONS on the pregnancy! :smiliedance:

I'm currently taking Elevit, I found them to be pretty good (A bit big though - So I cut them in half!) :)

Hi I saw my pharmacist on Wednesday and he told me that the Blackmores and Elevit were both much the same except with the Blackmores you need to take additional folic acid. The other thing he mentioned was that neither of them contained enough iron. Both have iron but not enough of a particular type (hard iron I think). So I got an iron supplement that contained vit C as well as aparently that helps the iron be absorbed.

I took elevit and I felt fantastic all the way through my pregnancy.

My Ob recommended Elevit, saying it had more iron, folate and Vitamin A than the other pregnancy multivitamins. It cost $22-$25 for 30 tablets (as most places had run out of the bigger boxes, which work out a little cheaper). I took it from 4mths pregnant until my bubs was 6 mths, as I was breastfeeding.

zenifa, elevit does not contain Vitamin A. Extra vitamin A is dangerous for baby.

But yes, I take elevit. It was recommended by my obstetrician as one of the best pregnancy supplements out..

I took one called Fabfol Plus. It was excellent, packaged a bit like the pill, with the days of the week on the foil packet so you can see when you've taken them. Comes in a 1 month supply, was about $20 - but I ordered 3 months at a time from the pharmacy.

Fabfol has 500mcg of Folate, which is the recommended daily intake of folate for pregnant women. It also has chelated iron, which is easier for the body to break down and use than standard iron in supplements. I found it to be excellant, but I did have to get the pharmacy to special-order it in for me.

I'm taking Blackmore's, took them with my dd as well.

For anyone in Brisbane, "Good Buy" Pharmacy at Cannon Hill has them for $24.95 for a bottle of 140!!! This is SO CHEAP! Normally would pay that for a bottle of 60. I stocked up on the weekend.

My GP told me yesterday to take Blackmores rather than Elevit as Blackmores has Iodine in it. Apparently there has been a recent study of toddlers and those with lower IQs tend to also have a lack of iodine.

Who knows though! I guess if you eat healthy fresh food - everything should be fine.

I take herb valley pregnancy vitamins most of the time...sometimes the fabfol ones, as they are the only 2 brands that i have found that are suitable for vegetarians!
