View Full Version : Scared & Confused
Hi, I've never done this before so I don't know if I've done it right.
I'm confused. My period is 8 days late today.
I've had nausea, sore boobs, I'm tired and I wee a lot.
I had a blood test yesterday and today I got the results.
It says my hCG result is 8 IU/L then under it says A serum hCG result of 5- 25 IU/L is not considered to be an established pregnancy and should be repeated in 4 to 7 days.
What does this mean? The doctor wasn't very helpful.
My period is never late. I don't understand what is going on. Has anyone else ever had a result like this?
I would love to be pregnant and I thought I was. Now I'm just confused.
Thanks :)

Firstly, welcome to BH :)
Second, hCG is only produced if you are pregnant so yes, you are pregnant. However, your hCG levels are low which is the case early in pregnancy which is why they say the pregnancy is not yet "established".
Has your doctor arranged for another blood test as recommended? It should then show a higher level of hCG if the pregnancy is progressing normally.
:hugs: I hope everything works out.
Thanks for your kind welcome JimJamsMum and thanks for you help. I don't understand why the doctor said she didn't think I was pregnant. Why would she say that? I'm going to have another blood test in about a week. xoxo

Hi Kab55,
Firstly can i say - you need a new doctor! A topic such as pregnancy should not be taken so lightly.
Realistically there is 2 outcomes to your situation. The first thing to state is that yes, you are/were pregnant thus having a level of 8.
My questions would be: is your AF always regular? how long is your cycle normally? Did you get a positive on a home pregnancy test?
If you have a 'typical' cycle and you are 8 days late for AF then that would mean that you would be 22 days past ovulation. If this is the case, then it may be that you achieved pregnancy, however it was not meant to be and you will soon get AF :(
The second situation is that your cycle was not per usual and that you actually ovulated alot later than usual (meaning that you are not actually 8 days late). If this is the case, then perhaps it is just too early and your levels are still rising.
If you POAS each day for the next few days you will either get nothing at all, or it will get darker and darker each day......that will be your answer..........
Whatever the answer may be, i wish you all the best :flowerz:
Thanks StrangeFruit. I have no idea what AF or POAS means. Sorry, I'm new to this. Thanks for all your great advice. Since I went off the pill in February my cycle has always been between 24 and 28 days. I have done a few home preg tests and they have all been negative. I totally agree with you that I need a new doctor. :)
Hi KAB55
Don't worry, you'll get used to the lingo lol! AF - Aunt Flo (period, in other words haha) and POAT - Pee On A Stick, HPT - Home Preg Test. I agree with the other comments, get some HPT's and take one each morning. If you are pregnant then the positive will only show up darker with each day or so. If for some reason you're not pregnant then it should come up negative. I'd also get a new doctor, I would not be happy with the way it was handled. All the best, please keep this thread updated and let us all know the results :hugs:

I agree - please go and see another doctor as the one you saw seems to have a care factor of zero. It sounds to me like you're pregnant but your levels of hcg are low at this early stage so they are holding back from saying that the pregnancy is firmly established.
I have read posts on this forum from people who don't even manage to get a positive home pregnancy test (hpt) until they are 6 or more weeks pregnant so it's not altogether unusual to have low levels. They will rise. Maybe buy some home pregnancy tests and test yourself - First Response are good and detect a low level of hcg. It could help put your mind at rest. Let us know how you get on.

Hey,
Thanks so much for all your support. It has put my mind at ease to know I can come here and get some honest advice. :D
I'm going to see another doctor tomorrow. I'll pick up some home pregnancy tests as well. I'll keep you up to date with what's going on.
Thanks again for all your help, I appreciate it so much. :hugs:
