alex has major bum rash. she bleeds and blisters. what should i do? We've only just started using mcns and have a decent stash, so i really dont want to go back to sposies.

have you been changing her enough?at least every 2 hours with wees and immediately with poos? You can use disposable liners with nappy rash cream so it doesnt ruin ur nappies. Lots of nappy free time. Is she had a change in her diet that could me making her wee/poo more acidic?

firstly i would say let her bum have a breather as much as possible while she has the rash.

you could try paw paw cream or i have found botty butter fantastic (well as fantastic as i can with only i round of nappy rash so far LOL).

as for what is causing it :detective:
could it be your detergent you are using ?
or maybe she is wetting a bit heavy and the nappy is getting to damp....you could try changing her more often or put a liner in to keep her bum dry.

thanks ladies. alex does poo ALOT, so pretty much every nappy and i change them as soon as she smells. i might start timing her and changing them regardless every two hrs. alex has no diet lol so i cant blame that. i'm using polar fleece reusable liners, do you think that could be the problem?

I use microfleece liners and dont have any issues, only time we get a rash is with disposable nappies

I personally think it could be the polar fleece causing the rash. Can you try not using it??Polar fleece is fairly thick and better as an outer fabric.

Could it be whatever you are using to wash them in? maybe try a double rinse and see if that helps.

My two have very sensitive bums. I use no detergent on my nappies. I strip washed them (hot water and dishwash detergent without moisturisers) then triple rinsed and line dried. Since then I machine wash in plain water only, as do many of my friends. No rashes, no stains. All the poo comes out with water only, and the uv from some on the line time is enough to kill the bugs.

I found that a mixture of wee and detergent residue was a killer on the girl's bottoms.

As a side issue, my nappies smell a lot better now. Night nappies used to get quite stinky by morning, but now they hardly have an odour at all.

from my understanding polar fleece isnt much of a liner. too thick .. could be causing her to get too sweaty perhaps..

tays the same though .. but hers is from ph levels out in her urine .. she had to go on a steriodal cream which is working great

Some kids simply cant handle cloth .... Tends to be our kids with the gut issues iykwim !

But there are things to at least try before giving up !

As suggested ditch the fleece & go for say the flushable liners by Eenees or there is also silk which apparently works brilliantly.

Try to change how you wash the nappies as in try a different detergent or maybe even try an extra rinse wash after you wash them.

The other option is to rotate & whilst its obviously not a great solution you are still saving money & the environment to a degree iykwim ! So do a few weeks cloth & a week of sposies.

I know for us when things get too bad we have to go to sposies because G's bum is so ulcerated I cant use all the creams for starters & the sposies just work better.

Its hard to know what to do but try everything possible if you can but if it doesnt work it doesnt ! I know of a mum who is a complete cloth head but sadly her SN daughter just couldnt handle cloth so sadly she is in sposies.

Is she teething? Some bubs get a horrible nappy rash when they're teething for some reason. DD gets this & I notice her pee smells really acidic which I think burns her skin

My little man is one of these no matter how many strip washes and free bum time as soon as the nappy went on 5 minutes later there was a rash all over his bottom....sad

I loved the MCN's so I gave them away, to a loving home....

ok i highly recommend the soap nuts!!

my kids all had sensitive buts and could only wear huggies - which was ok, but still casued some irritation. however when it came to having use huggies on 2 kids, i converted to cloth, and at first i had major issues with my most sensitive bum boy, lots of rashes - i eventually figured out it was th elaundry detergent.

so we eliminated it, and started with the laundry balls , and have since upgraded to soap nuts!

so far all bums in nappies are still rash free (as long as the sposies stay away! lol)

oh ad if you have a case of thrush at any point, get some canistan laundry rinse- and add it to the rinse when you wash the nappes - it actaulyl kills the bug!!and you wont end up with weeks and weeks of pure tourture to both you (having to deal with the sore wee weed child, but also to the kid! lol)

i now just use the rinse every couple of washes- so prob once a week (as i wash evey 2-3 days) and it seem to be keeping all issues at bay!

Hello, my DD has had that awful ulcerated nappy rash. I have found that it is from using laundry powder - apparently this leaves a low pH (i think) residue in the nappy and when combined with wee and a sensitive bum it burns and makes the awful looking rash. I've since switched to unfragranced, laundry liquid and we have not had the rash problem at all. Also, I've found that it doesnt go away as quickly when I use the plastic disposables (eg huggies). When I've used the naturecare nappies (kind of papery feeling and made from a corn based material) it's gone in a couple of days. Can I suggest that if you are breastfeeding to make sure you have lots of 'good bacteria' (eg a acidophillus supplement) and if your little one will have it then you can get a kids version they take in water - this seems to help DD as she has candida issues which i think contributes to the rash. I'm also wondering if she has some sensitivity to the fleece they use in the nappies. I dont want to get rid of the cloth though!:)

Are you thinking the sandmans may have caused the issue? What are they made from? Maybe your little one has trouble with the fabric??

LivinOnAPrayer

yeah i really think thats the problem. im not sure exactly how, maybe it is the fabric (the insert right on her bum?) other wise im not sure, but whatever works hey!

Hey there! Sorry to crash you thread.

We don't use cloth, but I think it is wonderful that you do. Sorry that bub has a sore bottom! It's horrible when they are uncomfortable and in pain. When Luciella was a few days old, she had a horrible reaction to something unidentified that was going in her nappy area. She was so upset; she would cry for hours on end. We ended up just leaving her nappy off and not using anything but water to clean her. It eventually cleared up in a couple of weeks, but was very messy in the mean time.

She recently got nappy rash, which exacerbated her preexisting eczema. After exhausting our options the first time with lotions, creams and washes, including SudoCream, Bepanthan, Bruer products, BodyShop products, prescription medicated creams and various "old-wife-remedies", we came across Perfect Potion's Beautiful Baby Bottom Balm. I just put it on the effected area at every change and it the redness is always gone in 24hrs, but usually after a couple of changes.

Perfect Potion use aromatherapy in their products, and it is all natural and some products are organic. Although they are on the pricey side ($34.95 for a 100g tub), in my opinion, if it works, it is worth it.

Another thing that effected Luciella's nappy area was Johnsons baby wipes and some of the Huggies range. We now use Curash wipes, and they are fine.

Hope this helps your bub's bum! And I hope the advice improves the situation.

We are having the same probem with recurring nappy rash from using modern cloth. I will be doing a strip wash tomorrow and try using liquid detergent instead of powder and see how that goes.

Oh and I've also heard wonderful things about Lucas' Paw Paw ointment being great for treating nappy rash.

soap nuts work out to be cheaper: u use 4-6 nuts each wash & u can use it up to 5washes. On 1website, it says 1kg can last a family roughly 1year!! havent had trouble with them so far, u can always get a sample bag for $5.50 (free postage) to try out HTH
