View Full Version : Are you or Have you smoked throughout a pregnancy?
I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and have never with my last 4 live birth babies ever smoked during a pregnancy. I am very concerned about what i am doing to my baby, but i know that if i stopped smoking i may very well loose it at the moment. We are under huge amounts of stress, which started around the time i found out i was pregnant.
so I dont need to hear how bad i am etc.. but what i am looking for are other women that may have smoked and to tell me if they had a healthy baby or not.
What experiences if any have any of you got in this area that you could share?

i smoked during my first pregnancy
i wasnt really aware of the damage it could do back then
i have to say it helped ( or i believed it did) with the stress i had back then - psycho stalker mother and all
i would say to quit as soon as bubs is born- i wish i did as i went without a smoke for days after he was born, but then started up again
i had a healthy baby boy- 3080 grams

Yes I did through both my pregnancies while its not something I'm proud of addiction is addiction and it was one I wasnt able to overcome, like you I was under stress with both
Both my bubs were/are perfectly healthy but some babies do experience problems
What i am looking for are other women that may have smoked and to tell me if they had a healthy baby or not.

I dont have any experiennce seeings I have never smoked. But its very commom for women to have healthy babies during pregnancy, & non smokers can have unhealthy babies just as much:yes:, Im 18 and know this.
You shouldnt be worried if you want to smoke just smoke. Thousands of women smoke and have healthy babies.

I was a smoker with my first and quit at about 8 weeks...I had no idea I was pregnant till 7 weeks....
He has Asthma..and I have to say I feel tremendously guilty.
I dont want to make you feel bad but I cant help but give you the other side...
The stress and the guilt that comes from thinking you might have caused a serious problem, in your child is so horrible.

While I definetly do not think smoking is a good idea while pregnant, and just because somebody else had a healthy baby after smoking during pregnancy doesn't give reason for someone else to do it, yes I did smoke. I only smoked maybe 7 a day, but even still I feel bad for it.
But my bub came out at 41 1/2 weeks, a healthy 7lbs 10, and an apgar score of 9.9 and so far no health problems, has had about 3 colds in her 15 months.
Thank you ladies for your honest comments.
I have only really smoked regularly for 10 years and quit with my last pregnancy 8 years ago just to start again afterwards. but i have lost 4 due to miscarriage since that pregnancy. each time i fell pregnant i quit straight away but i miscarried the babies anyway. This time i thought negatively and said to myself, what's the point in stopping the pregnancy wont stick anyway.. and lo and behold it did
i have this feeling that perhaps the quitting and the anxiety of cravings etc, may have contributed to the miscarriages. so i was scared to stop smoking .. i asked the midwife this and she said its possible but she wouldnt know. they recommend cutting back rather than going cold turkey when pregnant.. so perhaps there is reason for that.
anyway once again thanks for listening to me, voting on the poll and answering with posts.

hi there, great job in not smoking with your other pregnancies, i know it's hard to give up a drug like nicotine.
babies are much more likely to die of SIDS if their mother smoked whilst pregnant.
http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Smoking_During_Pregnancy_Can_Cause_SIDS_09638 .html (http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Smoking_During_Pregnancy_Can_Cause_SIDS_09638 .html)
this article says 9 out of 10 cot deaths were linked to mothers who smoked whilst pregnant.
so it's not just what goes on with your baby in utero, it's the likelihood of your baby surving after it's born.
even if you could stop now, it would help.
i hope you can find the support you need during your stressful time, and i'm sorry to read of your lost babies.
keep trying every day to stop smoking, it's all you can ask of yourself, to keep trying.
:hugs: dont just feel guilty, try and do something about it. good luck, and i wish you all the best, and your new beautiful bubba

three of my friends smoked during their pregnancy.
I don't know if it is all linked but all three babies have problems.
One child is sick all the time. Has asthma and has just been diagnosed with Autism. He has been in hospital numerous times for bronchitis.
One child is one year old and is still in 00 due to not growing normally and not reaching all the milestones. Mentally he is fine, physically (at the moment, he may catch up later on in life) he is not so good.
The third has had problems with speech, toilet training, motor skills, all sorts of things.
He is 5 this year and still people find it hard to understand his speech.
As i said previously I really don't know if it is all because of the smoking but to me it just seems to be a bit too much of a coincidence.
It is each to their own though.

I smoked for the first 4 months of my pregnancy with DS and gradually cut down and quit, I also was under alot of stress as I wa sonly 18 and pretty had no where to live, nothing to eat, and worred for the lives of me and my baby, so I dont think stress is an excuse but people like to use it as one, because addiction takes over. (I am not having a go at anybody)
Many women have unhealthy babies smoking or not smoking, vise versa :)

I would also like to add, that if a mother is smoking during her pregnancy it is not uncommon for the baby to go through withdrawel as my friend was told this because all her son did was cry in the hospital but after a week he was all better.

I smoked through my first pregnancy to 8 months, but as soon as I found out I was preggers I cut right down to about 4 smokes a day. I worked until I was 8 months preggers and gave up the day I quite work. My DD was born very sick and had to have CPR to live, but thyis was more about mismanagement of my labour I believe than smoking. As a young child DD suffered asthma but grew out of it by the time she was 8-9 and rarely gets sick with anything else.
With my second pregnancy I smoked pretty heavily right throughout. My DS was born through emergency C-Section, again due to mismanagement of my labour and pregnancy. However, he was completely healthy from head to toe and still is. He has gained weight well and so far hasn't had any illness (he is about 9 1/2 months).
I'm certainly not saying that smoking through pregnancy is the wisest choice, but I did it and thankfully my kids didn't seem to have suffered.

i smoked right up untill the last minute ds was born not that im proud of it but at the time no matter how much i thought of my baby i just couldnt quit (i tried on alot of occasions )
but he was born healty no problems at all he is now a healty happy 3 year old
thank you so much for all your replies. it has helped me enormously.
coco I thought like you up until this pregnancy as well.. i couldnt understand how they wouldnt quit and do the right thing... I dont have the answer to that because this time i am one of "them"
nothing like walking a mile in others shoes.. those i condemned yesterday I am them today..
karma maybe.
let me just say that unless you walk in these shoes, its really hard to comment.
I too smoked with both my pregnancies - 2 a day but i still smoked. both my children were born healthy and apgar's of 10. No this doesnt make it ok, but i want to know why everyone is always sooooo concerned about a mother smoking and not many people will say anything if they see a pregnant woman with a glass of alcohol. This is much more likely to harm a baby yet it seems more acceptable from what i have seen/heard.
My aunty also lost 4 babies and her doc told her NOT to quit smoking as this was likely causing the miscarriages due to the stress on the body and low and behold, she carried to term her last pregnancy - smoking.
So, whilst i did it, i wont say i'm not proud. Many people do much worse.........
Dont stress out about it, do what you feel comfortable with
Im another smoking mum....not proud of it but its who i am and i am terrible when i try to quit - i end up smoking more and getting stressed about the whole thing.
I smoked while pregnant with DS and he is a very healthy, happy and intelligent child.
He weighed 3.16kg at birth and rarely gets sick.
(He even cuts teeth and i dont even know til he opens his mouth to scream and lo and behold we have molars! LOL)
I once had a miscarriage years ago. I had tried so hard to quit when i found out i was pregnant. I went down to 1 or 2mg smokes and only had 3 or 4 a day.
When i asked the doc at the hospital if it was MY fault for not giving up smoking properly, his reply was; 'A baby is basically a parasite that feeds off of your body. In the end it really doesnt matter whether you smoke, drink or take drugs, because if your baby is programmed (genetically) to be unhealthy then thats how it will be, and if your meant to have a healthy baby thats how it will be'.
Now obviously he wasnt saying that its ok to drink, smoke and take drugs etc, but if you continue to smoke through a pregnancy, your baby will generally be no worse off than they would have been anyway.
Of course its better if we can quit, but i know that if my baby has Downs syndrome or excema (?sp) or Autism, its not because i smoked a few cigarettes, its because God created them that way.
I dont have any experiennce seeings I have never smoked. But its very commom for women to have healthy babies during pregnancy, & non smokers can have unhealthy babies just as much:yes:, Im 18 and know this.

Just wondering what types and how many authoritative studies/research projects have given you this type of information???
Seems to be opinion rather than fact! :)
i smoked till i was 17 weeks pregnant, then slowly quit.
i found out i was pregnant at 14 weeks, and my doctors told me to cut down and quit because if i stopped straight away it could harm the baby.
i admit thought at parties (everyone i knew was turning 21 when i was pregnant) i had a smoke. it made me feel somewhat included

Yep my mum told me about that too! She was smoking while she was in labour with me!
I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant with Summer, it was easy then.
Then when I found out I was pregnant with Taliyah, I cut right back but then I just couldn't stop. I felt so guilty- that's for sure. She was born a healthy 7pounds, no problems.

My sons Asthma developed at 4!!!!
so before that I would have said he was perfect..healthy and no probs.

True, true but in the old days ALL (well nearly) all the mums smoked and things are not anymore prevalent now than they where then, actually things like allergies are on the increase, and there are suggestions its because we are so careful in everything we do now eg, sterilization, what we can/cant eat etc.
Believe me i am not advocating smoking, yes i am a smoker and i truly disgust myself at times, i am a closet smoker as i refuse to smoke in public because i am ashamed, but i honestly dont think we should put more guilt onto ourselves as mothers for smoking, we have enough other guilts without adding to it. I cut down and was happy with my choice to do so, i could not have coped if i had stopped altogether and i believe the stress it would have caused me would have had greater effects on my unborn child (as many doctors also agree)
In all honesty your son may have had Asthma anyway, it can be from genetic predisposition. Yes smoking may have brought it out earlier and you should never smoke around him,, but dont beat yourself up over it.
My mum chain smoked, i dont have asthma.
My mum cut back with my sister, she does have asthma.
My sister has never had a smoke in her mouth, her son has bad asthma....
I know there is links to suggest smokes cause so many things, but us grown up children of smokers are still alive to tell the story aren't we.

I smoked through my first pregnancy (didn't find out till I was just about 12wks preg), was cutting down as the pregnancy progressed, I ended up having problems with the pregnancy and loosing my little boy

I am an ex full time smoker - and for years I've been a social (when I have a few drinks) smoker - as an athlete definitely a big no no for me, but it was my break loose let your hair down kind of nights that I would pick them up. I completely quit when pg with DS and this time around I had several in the first few wks of my pregnancy (when I didn't know) but quit straight away when I found out I was pg. I'm not sure why, but never had a problem just quitting at the drop of a hat, I'm not sure I've ever really been addicted to smoking.
In an ideal world I guess everyone would be able to manage what I have, but that is not the world we live in.
I wish you the best and hope your bub is born happy and healthy.
I have had two cases of cervical pre-cancer changes and one of the questions asked was did my mother smoke when she was pregnant with me.....so there are things that may not necessarily be immediately apparent in your child's early life as a consequence of smoking during pregnancy.

.
when i was in labour with ds, after my waters had been broken, i was getting really bad contractions, went outside for a smoke.. and a lady came up to me and said..˙our not meant to be smoking here".. i was in a gown, rocking through a contraction.. i looked her in the eye and said, im not going to go all the way to the road, because i wont make it back:rolleyes:

Try not to feel too guilty about it and think positively about bubs being fine, everyone has their addictions. :hugs:

I smoked while pregnant with DD. I cut down to 2 maybe 3 a day.. Not a lot.
My doctor said the same as someone elses mentioned about cutting down, so i did.
My daughter was born 11 weeks premmature but had healthy lungs and had no problems breathing. I thought my smoking was the reason for the early birth, but not according to the doctors.
She does have asthma now, but so do i, my mum, dad, sister, nanna, various other family members, DD's father, some of this family members. So i say that is not caused by my smoking it is a family thing. So only developed asthma at about 2years old, had to take these tablets daily for about 1 year and has finished them 3 months ago and hasnt had any problems. She never had any asthma attacks or anything, just got a bit weezy in winter.
So i would say you are probably not doing any harm..
Good luck though :hugs:

hmm always a touchy one...
i smoked a pack a day before i found out i was pregnant with DD... my first reaction (at 18) was to smoke her out... then after a week i had gone cold turkey and didnt touch one till she was 5 months old... now trying to kick it again:D
IMO... i would be the WORLDS BIGGEST HYPOCRITE if i smoked during pregnancy and then got mad at people for smoking around DD... DD has the early signs of asthma and i feel guilty just from the early days... i will not let ANYONE smoke around DD... myself and DD's dad included... no child deserves to suffer the consequence of my selfish actions and that how i see smoking in pregnancy... i realise it is hard to quit but for me the visions of walking into DD's room to find her cold and not breathing from SIDS was more than enough to help me quit...
thats just how i see it... sorry if i was too honest but i have been there... and smoking and the addiciton SUCK!!! i hate it so much.
i hope your bubba is born healthy...:hugs:

I quit within a week of finding out I was pregnant. I could not have lived with myself had my bubba had something wrong with her that smoking may have caused.
I have never smoked. With my last baby the midwife made a comment about my baby placenta. Something along the lines I can tell you never smoked with this bub. I was shocked that you tell by looking at the health of the placenta.:detective:
I smoked the entire 9 months I was pregnant with my daughter seven years ago. I was highly addicted back then and would smoke at least 40 cigarettes per day, sometimes even more.
She is a healthy, happy seven year old and does suffer mild asthma during Winter, however the doctors believe this is genetic because her father and everyone in his family suffer asthma.
She was born at 5.8 pounds at 38 weeks, she needed a splint on her arm for around a week due to injury during birth, my placenta did not follow and I needed a manual removal. There are mixed opinions on whether this was a result of my smoking or not. I personally believe it wasn't as the same thing happened to my mother, aunty and grandmother.
I am 5 weeks pregnant with number 2 and have set out a plan to be completely smoke free by week 12 of this pregnancy. I am using the cut down and quit approach and plan to give it my best shot.

I quit cold turkey the second I found out I was pregnant with DS. thought i would never touch one again.. but about a month ago I started again... damn stresses of a single mum :geek:
I quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant with DD and now only have one or two when I go out and have a few drinks...which is once in a blue moon nowadays
My mum smoked all the way through with my brother. Her husband (not my dad) died of cancer when she was 7 months pregnant and she also had another brother of mine and my sister to look after. In the 70's it was very difficult for a single mother with 3 children. My brother weighed nearly 11 pound and is 6"6 now. My mum says he would have been nearly a stone if she didn't smoke

I can't believe how many respondents have admitted that they smoked all the way through their pregnancies.
Morrigan, I appreciate your honesty and candidness, but is it worth taking the risk? If enough people respond with "Oh, I smoked for my whole pregancy and my baby is fine", will it be enough to outweigh all those who reply that their kids have ongoing health problems?
Would you get drunk a few times a week whilst pregnant if enough people said that they did and their kids were fine?
I'm not trying to bag you or say you are a bad mum. I understand that addictions are called addictions because they're not easy to quit. I appreciate that you may be under a lot of stress. Have you tried calling Quitline and telling them that you are pregnant and worried about the effects of going cold turkey?
I hope that, for your sake as well as your baby's and the rest of your family, you can knock cigarettes on the head.
My uncle died at age 43 of lung cancer and left behind two beautiful daughters. There are so many stories and statistics out there...please don't let yourself become one of them.
I'm sorry if my response is not wanted, but I couldn't read your post and not respond.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't matter how many people say their kids are fine, it doesn't mean that yours will be. No-one here can tell you that!
If you asked around "Is it safe to speed (while driving)?" a whole heap of people will tell you they've done it and never had an accident, but that doesn't mean that people don't have accidents, that people don't die.
Are you asking because you want to alleviate your guilt, or because you want to protect your child? Because the responses here might normalise your behaviour, but it is anecdotal evidence. They can only speak from their own experience, not from scientific research or facts.
If you want to know if smoking might hurt your child, I suggest you have a look at some of the information sites available online. just google 'smoking pregnancy'.

I am the same. As soon as I found out I was pregnant with DS1 the smokes went out the window, no porblems. Same with DS2. I did feel bad with DS1 though as I didn't know I was pregnant untill I was nearly 3 months.
I have no problems with quitting when pregnant as it is no longer just my body.
I have never smoked during any of my pregnancies, my mum smoked from the start to finish when she was pregnant with me though.

i actually dont get how it does not effect any baby, personally i would have thought the effects vary as in it does effect all but depends on how much.
the reason i think this is because wouldn't bub be getting the nicotine while inside ??
then when bub is born the nicotine is taken away pretty much so would not that be like going cold turkey ??
i am trying to quit right now, i smoked 1s and only had about 9 a day so i was not what i would call a heavy smoker (only in the past year though, i use to be quite a heavy smoker) but just the little i did smoke since stopping it has had such a sh!t effect on my body...im not talking mentally, im talking physically and health....headaches, my immune system actually has gone DOWN and i feel physically ill in my stomach (i just have to keep telling myself it WILL get better once i pass all of this crap:fingerscrossed::laughing:).
but yeah...does anyone get what i mean, its late and my mind is going 1000000 miles a second since my besite is in labor so i think im over thinking things to try to pass the time:o

Meh, my mum had an ashtray on her bedside table in hospital. I can only imagine what you think of that. Probably puffed on a cigarette while she gave me my first feed.
How rude. Its an addiction, not so much a choice for some people.
AND if it wasn't an addiction then why did you take it up when you had finished breastfeeding? I mean why bother
i have tried to actually quit a few times and it is freaking hard (as i just said in my PP). if i tried to QUIT while pregnant i would have failed big time, i think...rather i KNOW the only reason i was able to STOP smoking while pregnant was because i knew i would be getting them again, for me in my head there is a big difference in stopping and quitting and i am sure that is why i was able to stick to it.
i have friends who smoked while pregnant and while i would never support them smoking i would never condemn them for it
to brush it off as though it has no effect and its all good is wrong in my opinion but being informed and at least trying to better the situation in some way (even if only a little) deserves credit.
I stopped smoking 4 times when pregnant and each time miscarried anyway.
i thought this time i was just going to loose her anyways so didnt bother.. too depressed to care and endless amounts of lack of pregnancy bonding happened due to miscarriages
but she lingered and i still smoked
i hope i have not harmed her.. but i quit 4 other times and lost them
i dont know .... life is weird.

Wow! I am also pretty blown away with the poll results.
I would never smoke while pregnant. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if my baby got sick.

I had a drug addiction prior to conceiving my first child. I managed to kick that habit and the last thing left was smoking. I cut right down but couldn't manage to stop. I knew I was pregnant, but the terrible luck that I seem to have, I never believed that I would be bringing home a baby. Yes, I know that sounds stupid, but every day I thought I would miscarry. Towards the end, I was convinced my child would be stillborn. I had my last cigarette when I was in labour, just as we left for the hospital. I delivered 4 hours later.
I haven't smoked since, and have had other children.

:iagree:
You might not be polluting your child's body by not smoking while pregnant/bf but you started smoking afterwards and you could get lung cancer tomorrow or any other smoking related illness and die! What good is that to your children???
i have quit both smoking and drinking for that reason i would hate to leave my children with no mother.
