View Full Version : What keeps you awake at night?

Regardless of whether you are a parent or not, a good nights sleep has long been the key to a balanced life.
Unfortunately, it's not always easily to achieve.
Obviously, things change in time, but right now, what is keeping you awake at night the most?
And do you have any cures or suggestions for how to get a good nights' sleep.

Needs to be multiple choice for me...
I have always been a night person, I can easily sleep during the day stay awake at night...
And it comes from years jacked up on gooey, and then working at Pubs from 9am until 5am and doing it every day of the week....so 2 hours sleep in between...
Right now I'm pregnant, and I havent worked those hours for a long long time, but for some reason I still cant sleep well at night, but if no child around sleep great during the day....
Being pregnant has made me actually sleep more....I go to sleep around 8pm most nights, but then wake up at around 1am, and stay awake until say 3am, then back to sleep....
The only way I use to have a good nights sleep before i became pregnant again was to get drunk..lol... then I would sleep ALL night, but still wake at 5am....Which isnt really a great cure...lol

Im pregnant so im finding it hard to get comfortable now i find im awake at 4am/5am get up for an hour or so then go back to sleep til 10am or 11am.....but i also needed multiple choice...
My DH is in the Navy & away alot ~ this keeps me awake, missing him & wondering if he is ok.:(
Worrying about being a good mum & if i will be able to cope when he/she is born, especially while DH is at sea & i have no family near....
MOney ~ who doesnt stress about that!
I have to read for at least 30 minutes before i turn off the light - i find this helps me switch off from "my" life & tune out before sleep
I also meditate & have some great guided meditation tracks that i listen to on my ipod ~ at the moment i listen to my HypnoBirthing one.

Another with mutliple choices here.
I think I got into the habit of getting up to my children through the night (they didn't sleep through till the age of two) and it is a habit I can't get out of, that and needing to go to the ladies a few times a night.

Well since my two have started sleeping through the night (YAY! :smiliedance:) Its been me.
I'm pregnant, therefore I PEE. All the time. Its fabulous.
ETA: HeeHee, not a single person has chosen "I sleep soundly".

I agree - multiple choice but mostly, it is DS who is almost 2 and a half deciding not to sleep through the night anymore.

12-10-2008, 19:51
Not really any of the above... but I chose "worrying about life in general" as it's the most accurate.
I spend my nights worrying about how I look and whether or not my bf will leave me. It's the dumbest thing to worry about, but I do. I even run off to the toilets to have a cry about it sometimes.
I have such major body image issues... they're not relationship problems though, because it's nothing to do with HIM. He's done nothing to make me feel like I should be worried. In fact, he does everything right.
It's just ME.
I worry about this more than anything... more than money (which I have none of), more than DD (because she seems pretty fine anyway), more than EVERYTHING.

Although I have children that wake at night, I chose worrying about life in general because that's what keeps me from falling asleep.

I need mulitple choices because it can be any given few of those depending on the night... so I didn't really pick one in favour of another :o

I lead a very unhealthy life which has turned me into a bit of an insomniac. When I was living healthier I was sleeping properly. Oh and years of living with a night owl does that to you too.
Wow can we only choose one?
I could have ticked most of the boxes...
the question is what doesnt keep me awake at night.. not a lot.
I just sit there......at night.....And do nothing.....Probably because I have issues.
Pity I don't even know what they are:laughing:
WAAAAAAIT a second........why is there no BUBHUB on the list:confused:? That can certainly keep a person awake!
JabberJaw

Bub Hub keeps me awake at night, hence why i am sitting here posting this at 10.33 when i should be in bed!

See bubhub is just too addictive to just walk away from it of a night
At the moment one little eight year old with a temp and tummy pains is keeping me awake. No matter how old they are it is always scary when one of your children is sick.:hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy:

This pole should have been multiple choice. ;)
What keeps me awake is my kids mostly, and I am always deep in thought, I have too much on my mind and can't shut off. Also I have just found out we are expecting # 3 and still a bit shocked but I am happy, just thinking about how we'll manage and everything.

But I went for the most general one... Life in General. Thought it sort of took in everything else I needed too. :)

Normally i'm sound alseep straight away. But if i'm not tired enough.. normally i get kept awake thinking about life in general, really silly stuff like what i'll have for breakfast tommorrow or when i last washed the car.
I'm currently pregnant so ticked that option in the poll but I also have;
DS come in some nights (more early mornings really, 5-6am)
Our neighbors (across the road) enjoy loud parties and have frequent VERY loud domestics
Being a Vic raised girl the QLD heat is keeping me up some nights!

Lots of things keep me away at night.
My DH is away at alot for work so i miss him and worry about him at night.
I did shift work for years and i don't think my body clock has recovered so some nights i just can't switch off even if I'm exhausted.
My thoughts are the main thing that keeps me up...worrying about things...wondering about things.
Sometimes i think i only sleep when i'm too tired to think.
I feel tired now
i worry about anything and everything right before i goto sleep, completely ridiculous irrational stuff and then i have a cry lol. then when i wake up the next day nothing i worried about seems like its even a problem. lol..
wow re reading that...i sound like a big weirdo..

i need multiple choice too!
Neighbors keep me up - so so noisy, aggressive violent, or just drunk, and its right above us so can be a bit much.
that upsets dp's mental health conditions, and half the time he ends up freaking out and locking himself in a room. so i get to stay up and make sure he doesnt hurt himself.
or he wakes up with night terrors, and he cant be awake by himself like that
or my back is just playing up and i cant lie down without making it worse
or i'm having nightmares myself, or i fall asleep, wake up needing to pee evry 5 minutes cause i'm pregnant..... or i wake up STARVING at 3am
mmmm everyone keeps telling me how tired i'll be with bub here, how i'll never get any sleep, etc - hey i only get a couple of hours anyway if i'm lucky,

my back is killing me
im stressed out because im still no where near ready for bub, and he/she will be here in 6 weeksish
got no money, so can barley afford to eat
hmmm i think thats the most of it.
but oh well not much i can do about it. im on sleeping pills.... wich give me an hrs sleep

Work. The drive home from work at 1am wakes me up, so when I get home I can't sleep. Even when I am not working, I can't seem to get to bed early.
my dh!
my goodness! if it's not the snoring then it's the tossing and turning, or the talking or singing in his sleep, or kicking, or telling me off, or farting. oh the farting! he even wakes himself up some nights! and if it's none of those antics while he's asleep in bed then it's him awake, trying to get on my good side, iykwim!
so needless to say, the odd night he spends away are godsend!
anyone else in my boat?

I could have actually chosen 6 of those options as equal contributors.
No wonder I'm sitting here at almost 1am on the computer!!
I have suffered from insomnia for years, since I can remember actually, and the only thing that has ever really helped me is having the TV on. I know this is like the worst thing in the world for insomnia sufferers, however if I have some mindless, but likeable & familiar sitcom on, I'm asleep within minutes.
The TV in our room is out at the moment - hence my late, late nights on the computer!!
work work and more work. i often don't knock off till 10-11pm then i go get my kids so its another half hour before i get home, then i do some housework and it takes me a couple of hours to wind down enough to sleep
Getting up to go to the loo! So far it is only once at night and then early morning, but I am not looking forward to every hour!
I am up early this morning as I heard noises at 3.30am, woke Dh, he said it was the dog next door scratching the fence. So we watched the rest of a movie and then had scrambled eggs on toast. Dh is now off to work and I am going BACK to bed....Goodnight!

I tend to go to sleep well at the beginning of the night and wake up 2-3 hours later and lie there worrying about my daughter and things that could happen to her, things that I need to remember.
I'm frozen by fear worrying about whether or not I'll ever forget her, or loose her or leave her behind.
I know my fears are unfounded because she's always foremost on my mind so there is no way I could ever forget her.
Im definitely in the multiple choice section, my kids are up at night for feeds/bum change/wet bed
Then Im stressing ova money worries, i am the only wage earner, and dont know if i can go back to work just yet as Dylan is sick then I stress about his kidney problem as they are still testing what they are gonna be able to do for him
And even if i didnt worry about this stuff, i used to work 2xpm shifts 2xam shifts then a night shift in 5 days so my body clock is just screwy!!! lol

When DH and I have a tiff and his to stubborn to say sorry.. that keeps me up! I was awake till 2am the other night because of this... a simple sorry would make it all better
Money worries keep me awake at night. Always wondering if we have enough.
I usually sleep like a baby (mind you who come up with that saying?, obviously didnt have a baby).
The only time I really have trouble sleeping is if my dh is working night shift.
If I know i have alot on the next day, then it takes me a while to get to sleep but then sleep like a baby.

I used to be a cr*p sleeper before DS. I started sleeping REALLY well about 2-3 months beofre falling pregnant with him and well, didn't good night sleeps go out the window then . DS was a pretty good sleeper but I'm a worrier so... Now pregnant with #2 and not sleeping any better (leg cramps don't help though).

I picked life in general only because it really is a selection of alot of them!
money problems, relationship problems, worrying about what didnt get done that day, what i need to do tommorow.
It seems like a selfish thing for me to be upset about, but DH has been working 7 days a week to pay off one of his loans as quickly as possible, which is causing pressure on our relationship because I never see him anymore, so im upset about that and cant seem to let it go to enjoy the short hours I have with him and our son..
Hes gone before I wake up(4 or 5am, and doesnt get home until 5 or 6 (sometimes 7!) by then its time to put bub down, make dinner, do dishes and then hes asleep cause he has to get up early..
I think id rather be poor and happy, then have money and be lonely..
BaDaBing
15-02-2009, 11:48
the first 3 off your list - but usually I can sleep pretty easily.
Sometimes its a bunch of things that run through my mind. I usually sleep okay though, but i do off course have the occasional nights where i just toss around because i keep thinking about the bills. the kids. My Job. and all these other things...
worry, worry will always make me toss and turn, happens a few times a month, things like kids, bills, partner...stress the norm, more so now to, as i can,t go to the gym for an hour and work of the stress along with the calories.
Only a little way to go:yelclap:

lots of things! when something is on my mind, I always think about it from every different angle! drives me batty when I can't sleep!
Last night it was the Rain and Thunder and Lightning - and my sick daughter sleeping next me! And you can probably add being pregnant to that list too!!
lisas5boys
26-02-2009, 12:06
With five boys, most of them sleeping all night long, unless they wake up for a drink - I usually crash at night time and then wake up when they are awake asking for breaky.
Used to wake up heaps when they were babies as they did not sleep well.
Lack of sleep is such a torture and do not wish it on anyone. Because I am so crabby if I do not sleep at least 6-8 hours I am happy to say nothing can keep me awake at night time.
Thanks

not really, the frogs are the noise makers, the snakes are not venomous and the spiders pretty much stick to themselves, the latter 2 are very quiet also, I have a 9 month old son and it's a bit scary to find snakes in his room!

At the moment what is keeping me awake is bloody new house and house hunting worries!.. We have just put in an offer on a house that we are waiting to find out about, and I'm just on the edge of my seat at the moment. Indeed it would be....
Lately for me its been my DH working afternoon shifts and not getting home till late, also keep dreaming about work (who wants to do that at night).
I am kept awake at night by my unborn child who makes it hard for me to breath any time I am lying down. This is usually followed by feeling guilty because I know I am keeping my husband awake by tossing and turning like a rotisserie chicken. Finally around the time I am so exhausted I drift off to sleep in some weird position I am awoken by my darling 5 yr old as he tries every trick in the book to get me up even though its usually only 5am .
