Well I had my first Antenatal visit at Armadale Hospital this afternoon. The midwife was lovely and I got my Bounty Bag (yay).

During the 'interview' she asked me about my first trimester screening and if I'd had an ultrasound yet. I was totally unaware there was a test I could get this early as my gp hadn't mentioned it to me (come to think of it, she hasn't mentioned much of anything to me at all, she just gave me a referral to Armadale and sent me on my way). The midwife thought it was odd she didnt mention it... as did i.

Anyway, now i'm kinda sad that i've missed the dating ultrasound cause I am a little confused about my dates. Going by the first day of my last period im due on the 9th of November and am one day off being 14wks. But I was hoping to get a more accurate date than this and now I think I have to wait untill 18-20 weeks to even see the baby :( It doesnt even feel real yet apart from the morning sickness so im kinda ****ed about that.

I do have a pamphlett here and it mentions you can have a second trimester screening between 14-17wks, is it worth getting that done? I'm 27, is the risk for Downs Syndrome enough to bother risking a false positive?

I wish my gp had said something to me about the Dating Ultrasound. I want to see the baby :( I guess I'll just have to wait another month and hope everything is ok in there. :fingerscrossed:

While im here, has anyone given birth at Armadale Hospital in WA? Is it a good hospital?
Im so clueless. I wish I didnt feel so confused and just... well... clueless.

I find it so funny in this country how the doctors don't tellyou anything about pregnancy....they just refer you on, and you won't usually see anyone else until around 12 weeks! They could at least hand out a pamphlet or something lol.

Don't worry too much about having a dating scan. They usually just go by your last period unless you are unsure about it, or have irregular periods or something. By the way, the 9th November is a great time to have a baby (it's my birthday lol)! At 12 weeks you can have a scan and a blood test to figure out your chances of having a downs syndrome or spina bifida baby, but obviously you're past that stage now....not sure wether the 14-17 week screening is a similar thing??

You'll quite possibly start feeling movements in the next few weeks, so you may start feeling a bit more 'pregnant' after that!

I had my early u/s to help with dates fat lot of good that did
I ended up with new dates every u/s i had done !
If you go back to your g.p im pretty sure you could get the u/s done now all that needs to be said is that its for dating but i dunno.
As i said i had the early one then the 19wk then i had another 2 after due to an abnormality that was picked up so yep 4 different dates to what i was told should be my due date & then i was always measured out so in the end i figured the baby will come when its ready lol !

Good luck im sure all will be fine & things will settle down with great care by your middies !
They do a great job

Thanks guys, you made me feel a little better about the whole thing. :hugs:

I think we'll just wait 4wks and get the 18/19wk scan done. Seems silly to have a scan then have another 4 wks later, though I do wish I had a picture of the baby already. Oh well.

I know two people who have had babies at Armadale and both have said they are really good there :)

Actually I think my DP was born there too lol.

My GP has booked me (apparently..) into Armadale Hospital as well.. so I'll be interested to see what people have to say about it!!!

You could always be a bit sneaky, book in for the nuchal scan and go at 10 weeks, which is too early, so they will scan you and tell you its too early and to come back, and they might not charge you or will just charge you for the ultrasound, not the nuchal component, which you can claim back on Medicare.

You can say you got the dates wrong because you missed the dating scan, "so sorry" etc, but at least you will have a more accurate date AND get to see bubby.

I was lucky and got a doctor at my usual clinic that was really helpful... she let me know ALL the different options for care amd testing that I had... not just the ones that included me paying her money.....

A friend of mine is nine weeks behind me, and wasn't so lucky... her doc has told her next to nothing, and I don't even think she has had a booking appt at the hospital yet....

I also had a great middy at the booking appt who again detailed all my options.... and in turn I got into a fantastic new group practice midwife team at the birth centre.... it seems to have opened so many doors for me, and provided me with loads of info that the other girls in my antenatal class haven't gotten... prob helps that I am a little miss know it all, and have to read everything I can find.... I ask lots of questions!!
