I know I will probably learn this along the way, but it's been on my mind the last few weeks so I thought I'd take the plunge and look stupid by asking such a question.

When you put your precious little newborn in their cute little bassinet to sleep.. what are they in?

I imagine they're in nappy and clothes of course, I imagine wrapped up in some flanno wrap.. but what then?

Blankie or quilts on top? No? A sheet on top? Wrapped up in a heavier wrap material (polar fleece?)

HELP!

(Yeah, it'll be middle of winter when Nugget graces us with her presence so....)

I have used another blanket on top of their wrap just to tuck them in and keep them a bit warmer, as long as the wrap isnt a real thick one.

I avoided quilts until 12 months of age. I think they are a SIDS hazzard, I could be wrong though!

For a newborn though I put a blanket over the top!

If the blanket makes a habit of coming off though, the baby sleeping bags are very very handy!

for a newborn, a blanket folded in half so two layers should suffice
as she gets more active a sleeping bag will be good
can't kick it off and get cold

Hmmm, the dude was a winter baby and I put him in:

singlet
nappy
wondersuit
flannel wrap (wrapped in this)
blanket folded in half (just kind of tucked in over the top)

I also had an oil heater in our room, perhaps more for me than anyone .

Oh, Seekrit, if you're stupid then so was I - can't tell you how stressed I was about this before DD was born.

Basically, DD was born at the end of June, so was a midwinter baby too. We've always had an oil column heater in her room, and kept it at around 21 degrees. In the depths of winter we dressed her in a singlet and wondersuit (and nappy obviously! ), then wrapped her in a brushed cotton bunny rug, and covered her with another bunny rug, or similar weight blanket, folded in half.

These days we have her in a grobag - they're great if you don't want to wrap your bubba, or if they don't like being wrapped - if you want to look at them, here's the link www.grobag.com.au (http://www.grobag.com.au)
Another mum posted a link to a product that looks really similar, but is about $30 cheaper - http://www.curlytops.com.au/

Good luck, and just remember that if you're checking your little person's temperature in the night, its common for them to have cooler hands so you can't go on them - you put a hand to their chest/tum to see how warm they are.

With gwen i would put her in ofcourse her singlet and jumpsuit, then i'd wrap her in a flannelette wrap nice and tight (until she wouldnt let me anymore), and then i'd put a blanket over her from about the armpits down, and then to stop it moving down or up, i'd tuck the whole excess of the blanket down the sides and end of the bassinette matress (i had a thicker tetra matress) until it was quite firm, because DD actually liked being wrapped quite tightly. It worked for me and she was born at the end of may as it started getting very cold :)
