Hi to any Mackay mums out there!!
DH is looking at getting a job in the mines up that way and so we may be moving from Sydney to Mackay by the end of the year.
Basically I just wanted to know what Mackay is like generally. Are the people friendly? Are there lots of things for young kids to do? Are the schools good? What are the "good" areas to live? Anything else we should know?Any negatives about Mackay?
I have been to Mackay, but only for a short time on holiday and that was about 15 years ago, so I really can't remember much about it!
If we do end up there (which it's looking about 95% certain) I hope to say hi to any Bubhubbers!
Hi there :)
I'm Emma! My husband, son and I moved to Mackay from VIC not too long ago.
He works out in the mines here.
I don't know if I can help you much with your questions about Mackay but I am very happy to meet for a coffee when you do move here!

Hi Emma - thanks for replying.....that's ok, I guess we'll find out heaps once we move there! It'd be great to catch up and have a cuppa once we're settled.....probably still a couple of months away yet, but I guess once DH gets a job it'll all move really fast.
How does your DH find working in the mines - is he underground or at an open cut? My DH has not worked in mines before, but is looking for a change and the extra money would be nice. He's an electrician.
Anyway, I'll let you know once we're up there so I can meet you and any other Mackay bubhubbers around.
Nicole.
Hi Nicole,
Sorry I just read through my post and realised I wasn't helpful at all!! So far I have found the people to be mostly friendly however like everywhere there are some that just can't be civil. I am not talking about Bubhubbers though as I haven't met any yet!
My hubby is also an electrician and he works in an underground mine out at Moranbah, he had never worked underground before moving up here so it was new to him to but he seems to like it :)
Anyway good luck with the move up! If there is anything i can do to help out just give us a yell.
Bye for now
Emma

Hi Nicole,
Im lisa I have a 19mth girl Tiarnee and have been living in mackay for 3yrs now. I like mackay, most people seem friendly. I have made friends with a few other mothers and go to a playgroup and they are all really nice.
most of the schools seem good but only have dealt with a couple as i use to work in child care with the schoolies.
Most parts of town is pretty good, i live on the north side and love it there, the northern beaches areas are especially nice. Use to live on the sth side and hated it. If your looking to buy a house some can be quite expensive and rental are the same but hard to get a rental as they are in high demand cause of the mines. There is lack off accomodation is mackay.
There isnt a great deal to do in mackay with kids. We dont have any play centres. But there is heaps of parks, beaches, we now have a lagoon, 2 pools, there is heaps of playgroups- through playgroups australia and the pcyc - which has heaps of play equipment which they set up inside.
My partner is an auto electrician at the mines and travels to all different mines. he is on a 5 on, 2 off roster at the moment but hopes to get on a 4 on, 4 off, so then he will have more time at home with us.
Hope this has helped. Would be keen to catch up if u end up moving to mackay.
