View Full Version : Cloth pads/cups should be sold in more shops.

I think cloth/washable pads should be sold in shops like wool worths etc, as well as cups. I understand that shops make more money from women buying products constantly. But I am emailing all of the bigger shops now and asking them to consider selling more variety in their shops anyway.

I made a point they all like to make out they care about the environment, so I said it would really show how much they care about the environment.

If anyone has the time feel free to email them to, the more people who email them the better.

I think a good start would be if they started selling cups in chemists.

People would probably be more receptive to that than cloth pads.

I get embarrassed buying tampons at woolies.. let alone anything else.

I love the extensive range available to buy online.

Oh well done!

I wish I had a sewing machine, are you using bamboo as a filler?

I was talking to my gyno about it and he had no idea they existed.

I wish GP's stocked them and just gave them out for free.

Oh yeah I hear ya.....

I'm secretly hoping to convert all the girlies in my family..... I have 3 sisters and my sisters partner is female... not to mention mum.....

Already my 16 yr old sis has asked about getting a cup....

It would make it so much more recognisable and socially acceptable if alternatives were available more broadly and in plain sight.....

Naiwen:
thanks. no i'm not using bamboo because i can't find it in any of the shops where i live (i will buy it online, but at the same time i might just buy some ready mades :p)

i used an in-between period's liner as my template
so i'm just doing it to insert between periods. and to test it out, because i'm cutting up one of my waterproof covers (from my own baby bed, not sure if its the same thing as pul, so i figured i'd just try it out instead of putting it off longer and never getting around to it)

Thats right,

Another thing is, how come they happily sell Baby Bjorns etc in mainstream stores but not ERGO's, HAB etc.

I love our baby bjorn but why not give people the choice kwim.

With you on that one Naiwen.... you'd think the options that were healthy for both mum and bub's bodies would be more readily marketed.....

Think that's why I'm in love with kidscentral right now....

Why are our female reproductive system 'experts' advocating poisonous products, why aren't they advocating the healthier alternatives, the ones that will make their job easier.

Tampons have been known to cause infectious lacerations that need surgery.
The experts know this yet they don't consider the alternative. There's also the talk about tampons causing cervical cancer.

Blegh, just makes me so mad.

What worries me is that myself and many other women have experinced shorter, less painfull periods as a result of switching to cloth.

What are the putting in sposie pads/tampons that this happens?

:yelclap: Good on ya :) Maybe putting them in supermarkets will make them less expensive too?? I wonder if part of the reason they don't sell the cups is because menstruation is seen, by the wider community, as gross and dirty. I don't use the diva cup, but I was telling a friend about them a while ago and she was like ewww, why would I want to empty a cup full of my blood in the sink? She is one that thinks menses are gross and you don't talk about it.

naiwen
23-10-2008, 15:13
And soiled pads and tampons sitting in landfill for years isnt gross!

Where do people think their rubbish goes?

OT, but where did you ladies get your Diva from online? I've been thinking about getting one for a while but keep forgetting...

yea i agree!
i highly doubt they would make a loss! plenty of people my way would be glad i think, because there is no where that sells them here, apart from the internet. and then you have to pay postage on top of it.
it would make so much sense!
i've been making them, and my plan was that when i got a big enough stash to approach the local coles and woolies and chemist and ask if they'd be interested!!! and i plan on selling them at the market too!

oh, and somebody said about GPs giving them for free... that would be nice!

With ya Ash... why shouldn't the option that is more healthy for our bodies and our overall environment be the norm?????? It would be nice to see it that way one day....

Ebay!!!!

It's amazing actually, you get a REAL view of what is happening in your body when you use a cup, etc.... it's really not as daunting as it seems.... I was amazed at just how little blood I lose a month..... would have never had any idea had I continued to use tampons etc.....

Seeing as how I am on a roll now haha,

Why is vagina a bad word? What's disgusting about menstrual blood? And why should we be ashamed of something that is part of our natural ability to bear children?

My menstrual blood is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less disgusting than my sons poop that IMO!

delirium, I got my diva cup off US ebay.
Was around twenty dollars.

There are also moon cups too or lunettes.

What are the putting in sposie pads/tampons that this happens?

dioxin, pesticides, bleach, stuff we wouldn't put in our mouths, but only our vaginas... (Assumed the tampon distributors).

Oh I forgot to check and see how you're going with it. :D Well, I'm sure!

The first time I put it in I was sitting in a weird position and put it in waaaay wrong and felt like I was going to faint :laughing: but that was my own stupid fault.

I got it in the 2nd time perfectly and once I trimmed the stem, it's BRILLIANT!!!

No sleeping on towels, no carrying around boxes of tampons, no worrying about leaking, I love it!!!!! :D

I know the feeling.... you're first go and you're like "how the heck does this go.... "..... I felt sooooo clumsy....

They are wonderful aren't they....

Little OT but (and I know neurotic mummy here... DD is only 2)..... I'm wanting to do a menstruation preparation kit for DD.... with some fantastic cloth pads, cup, a couple of wonderful insightful books, some great oil blends, a heat pack and something special like a crystal necklace..... just so she knows how special womanhood is and how to cherish it not hate it....

I wouldn't actually mind doing this kind of thing and selling it.... but not sure there would quite be the market for it....

ITA. It's a normal bodily function for women from 10 or 12 until up to the 50's, which is most of our lives.

I just think, like I said, that because it's blood, it's seen as icky. It's been handed down that menstrual blood is dirty (I actually read somewhere that it's very clean). It's sad really.

They sell a menarche kit on clothpadshop.

But there is no harm in you making a couple and trying to sell them.

Most families see it as something to be hidden and embarrased about though...

 yes I remember reading the instructions, looking at the cup and going.. HUH?

I think there SHOULD be a market for that sort of thing. I love your idea actually. Womanhood is special and I think AF is a time we deserve a bit of pampering - your idea is wonderful.

Although mine would have a cup, chocolate, romance movies, a box of tissued and a punching bag!

Oh Twowisegals- Such an awesome idea. :)

I want to go back to my high school and give a presentation about Menstrual cups/cloth pads, including the hidden lies about tampons and pads and helping the young women feel better about menstruation.

Oh and I'd love to yell at the principal for never supplying soap in the girls bathrooms- I mean come on.
We never ever had soap in our bathrooms yet we had the disposable sanitary bins.
