Hi All

I just wanted to post this link to a petition someone has started (not me ;)) to have a study here in adelaide stopped. The study involves using controlled crying and two other methods to assess which is the most efficient at getting babies to sleep. It is also going to test the cortisol levels in babies who are subjected to controlled crying. If anyone is interested in reading more about the reasons behind the petition or wanting to sign it, this is the address:

Wow, I really can't imagine how that study made it through the ethics committee. That's just really cruel for those poor babies who are assigned to the controlled crying group. Surely it should be self-evident that leaving a baby to cry themselves to sleep is causing harm, at least in the short term. Why is it that people don't think that babies feelings matter? So sad. I bet cosleeping isn't one of the other groups either.

Yep it's very sad :crying: And you are absolutely right, co-sleeping is not one of the control groups. Which just seems silly to me given that that's how babies have been parented overnight since caveman days

I'm not really FOR CC, but I don't think it's fair to assume that the parents doing CC don't think the baby's feelings matter.

I think it's great they are doing this study. The parents involved have a say in how they wish to raise their child, and would probably have done CC whether it was for the study or not.

I look forward to the results so we can finally put this controversial topic to rest.

Already children are being CCed, but no one seems to worry about those children, just the ones in the study all of a sudden  Sleep schools have been using CC for a very long time, so imagine the amount of children who have gone in and come out of there?

Maybe we are better off signing petitions to sleep schools re not doing CC.

I agree...

Im sure the parents who are in the CC group agree with the theory of CC, and would have done it anyway, in the uncontrolled environment of their own homes...

In which case I think this study is a good thing...as it might finally put some concrete data into the argument...

shame they arent examining co sleeping

I think it's actually good that proper research is being done. I haven't used CC on DS and never will, but I do think that research like that is needed to see if there really is a risk or not. I'll be interested to see the outcome.

To be honest, I think co-sleeping doesn't need to be examined.. Not in this case anyway. I think the basis of this study is to see how crying affects the child..

Maybe a separate study of children sleeping alone in a cot, or co-sleeping could be done.

true...

It would be interesting though to compare the stress levels of kids engaged in CC with kids placed asleep in their cots and kids falling alseep with mum and dad...

regardless, the results will be interesting

I'm against sleep schools practicing controlled crying too. The infant mental health association has issued a statement saying it does not support controlled crying at all. I would always advise that parents are responsive to their baby's needs, and I don't believe that babies should be left to cry at all. Crying in arms, with a parent to comfort them, is very different to the baby being left to cry alone.
