Hi,

DS is 4.5mths and I've noticed that the last few days my breasts haven't felt full at any time - even when he "accidentally" slept through one night. He has been feeding every 3 hours or so, as per normal, and seems satisfied, still brings some up after each feed. Sometimes, however, he goes for the second boob as well (he's always been a 1 boob per feed baby). He also hasn't been falling asleep at the boob today, which he normally does if he's tired. He's still having very wet and dirty nappies.

I guess I'm just used to the really solid full feeling. I don't miss that, but I guess it got me a little concerned that my supply might be dropping.

If I squeeze the ducts I still get milk, sometimes drops, sometimes a stream.

Could it be the supply stabilizing? He's showing signs he's ready for solids too.

What happens to supply around this time?

Thanks

Lis

Hi,
I think you are right, your supply is stabalising. Lots of women associate big full breast with supply, however at some stage your body will work out how to supply milk when required i.e. let downs when sucking starts instead of all throughout the day randomly. You may go back to full hard breasts throughout your feeding time as growthspurts increase the supply ahead of what is actually needed, teething feeding is a big supply booster too.

Congratulations on reaching 5 months, wishing you many more months of happy feeding:fingerscrossed: .

Thanks goosie,

I was hoping as much. It was just such a change from what I was used to that I was looking for some reassurance I think.

I won't miss having to squirt in the sink when DS decides to wait an extra hour for his next feed. Ouch!
