Has any one else had problems with cloth nappies leaking?
I was given 12 weeks nappie wash service and three weeks in I am going out of my mind, yesterday I had to change my 3 week old son 4 times - twice all his bedding had to be changed also.
I have currently got disposables on so that I can get some washing done, but now
I am thinking of admitting defeat and sticking to the disposables.

Are they normal terry flats?
Are you using a hemp booster or microfibre booster in the nappy?
And more importantly did they come with a cover to put over the nappy?

My disposables leaked for the first few months with the dude... I don't know if it was because we didn't put them on properly or if they were perhaps too big .

I think we just needed to get the hang of it... maybe you need to get the hang of the clothies?

im thinking of using cloth nappies too, isnt there different ways to fold them for boys or girls?
or maybe your kid is a bit like a wet bar of soap - slippery little sucker!!

if you are using terry flats you could be using the wrong fold for a newborn.. or the wrong fold for your bubs body shape... there are lots of websites which list the folds ..

what covers are you using??? and are you ensuring that ALL the terry is covered by the cover?? because if any sticks out - that is where the wetness comes from

if you are using fitted... let me know the brand - I might be able to help!!!

hope that helps!!

Get a decent cover.

Fluffies are cheap and cheerful (from K-Mart), but by no means the best of what's out there.

I have used an origami fold on all my bubs from birth, secured with an old fashioned nappy pin, topped with a fluffy and I rarely have any problems.

It's not uncommon for a young baby to go through in excessof 12 nappies per day using flat cloth nappies, so make sure you are changing frequently.

for a DECENT cover you WILL pay more than the pvc ones at Kmart... good covers cost around $15 which I thought was ludicrious (sp?) when I started out... but now I cant recommend them highly enough ... $4 at the shops was just a waste... so buy just a few GOOD ones... they last for AGES!

check out the wraps (covers) at baby beehinds (they are not pvc... and are a comfy soft and thin fit over bubs) www.babybeehinds.com.au

or bummis (lots of different people stock bummis on their site... here is the link to the bubblebubs covers page... they are a little cheaper here... (there is another print which she doesn't appear to stock... bummis also come with frogs on them)

there are also waterproof wool covers... but I dont know much about them...

I'm using cloth and they are great!

It took me a few goes to get it right, and still sometimes if I dont fasten the nappy right I can end up with poo up a leg or something like that!

We are using the kite fold with an extra fold my MIL showed us esp for boys. (you just fold one of the sides over a couple of inches before you start the normal kite fold).

Also I just use the plastic pants from Woolies....they are only a couple of dollars for 3. You need to make sure you fold in the nappy around the legs so that they are tucked in tight around the babies bottom and also within the plastic. If there is any over hang, when it gets wet the clothes soak it up!

Oh and SNAPPIES....they are from woolies too...a little Y shapped stretchy clip...they are great! Hold the nappy nice and tight!

Goodluck!

I have been using the flannel nappies and today tried the toweling ones. I was using the plastic T shapped covers that they use in the hospital, then I tried the polyester pilchers - they have pvc leg gussets and a pvc lining. The wee leaks out from the back up the top of the nappy. I even tried two nappies. Have tried the kite fold and the triangle with the folds in the middle, the one they show you in the hospital. He's being changed every three to four hours at the most. I think he may be a big weer.
Thanks all for your advice.

Just my experience, but three to four hours is a long time between changes.. My daughter always needed way more changes than that.
