To have the amniocentesis needle thing done when it carries a risk of miscarraige? Do they only do it if you have had the ultrasound and they find something wrong??

I haven't had the nuchal fold ultrasound at all and my doc has sent me to have the amnio done. Do i really need to have it done, can't i just have the ultrasound first and then if there is a high result to then take that test? I just dont want to lose my baby over a stupid test thats all. Should i ask my doc if i can just have the nuchal ultrasound first? Or should i just change docs as my partner doesn't really like him.

are you over 35? I think that's when they like to routinely suggest people do it. But no, you don't 'have' to have any test done, it is your decision. don't be pressured into something you don't want to do. I don't see any reason why I would ever have one.

sorry but TBH i cant really say if it is necessary or not (actually it is a choice thing, i guess i cant 'side' with him or not IYKWIM) with out knowing why he has chosen this path do go down for you.

is there a reason he would be wanting it done ?

Did your Dr give you a reason as to why he wants that procedure done?
I can't imagine that it would be done without an u/s but I'm not in the medical field so dont know much about it. I always thought they only did it if the u/s came up with something that required further investigation.
If he didn't give you a reason you should not have it done until you are certain you need it. You should get a second opinion and a clear understanding of why they want it done.

I agree that it is a little strange that your doc has ordered an amnio before an ultrasound. Have you had a strong family history of any syndrome or terminal condition?
There may well be a reason with timing of your gestation being a big factor in determining whether you could have had the NT but to go straight to amnio seems a little full-on. Ask more questions if you are really hesistant and by all means, get a second opinion if you are still uncomfortable with the idea. Its your pregnancy and you have a right to question the necessity of all testing.
No-one can force you to have the amnio but bear in mind you have a limited time frame to get it done "safely" (as in where the risk of miscarriage is at its absolute lowest) so get your doctor to explain his decision ASAP so you can make one of your own.

You haven't given alot of info but I would say if you are considered "low risk", you are under 35, you haven't lost a previous pregnancy due to a chromosomal problem - I would be telling the doc where to put his amnio.

The risk of miscarriage after this procedure is high enough to warrant it not being done without reason - 1/200.

Secondly, it is your decision as to whether you agree to these tests, many women forgo the NT scan because it has a very high rate of false positive results which then lead them to having amnios on what usually turns out to be a healthy pregnancy.

Do some research, even if your only risk factor is being over 35 it's still unwise to do this as a "routine" test. Jumping to the "big gun" of an amnio without the information provided by an ultrasound is overkill and risky.

I'm 23 and its my first preg and there is nothing in my family history to suggest i would need anything.

I wasn't given a reason by my doctor. I think he was on planet 'fairy' when he wrote it all up because he put the due date to be the 15/7/09.... i'm due on the 22/4/09... the 15/7 was my LMP... ****... he didn't explain anything just wrote it all up and said do this.

This is my first preg so i'm all in a spin and i have no idea really whats what...

No, you don't have to get it, it sounds like you don't really want to get it so I think you should go with your gut instinct. During pregnancy a women is highly attuned to her instincts.

Basically, if you won't terminate in the case of the baby having something wrong with it then there really is no point getting it.

I also think you should change doctors if you want to, which it sounds like you do.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

:iagree:

Both with only getting it done if you think you would take action that there may be something wrong with your bubs (for this reason I didn't do the NT test- it wouldn't have changed anything for me)

And with finding a different doc. Sure, everyone has their off days, buuuut- this one sounds a little out of tune.

Good luck :)

No.

If you do not want to have it done, you don't have to.

Please do research your options to see if it is an appropriate thing for you.

I just rang the ultrasound place and they said that its the Nuchal Translucancy test that i'm having. I could have sworn with my 2 ears that the lady at the reception said they had to allow time for a needle when i was booking it.

I think i will change doctors anyway cause he doesn't explain anything to me. Thanks everyone for all of your advice... this place is like my preg bible... I'll let you know how it goes its not till the 15\10..

thankyou once again

The needle might have been the blood test that they sometimes do along with the Nuchal scan.

I didn't have the bloods taken, just wanted to know what the scan said, that was enough for me. Lots of people do this. Completely your choice.

Then that is okay.

You don't have to get that particular procedure done if you don't want to.

Usually it is only discussed if you seem to have a high risk of a downs syndrome baby from the ultrasound.
