View Full Version : Maybe Baby Ovulation Test Question
My Miracle Baby

I have just started using the Maybe Baby Ovulation Test yesterday. (The saliva test under the microscope which shows ferns when you are ovulating). It came in the mail. I have a question for anyone who has used this test before.
My AF finished on CD5 and I began testing on CD8.
Yesterday on CD8 I tested in the afternoon (made sure I did not eat/drink for 3 hrs before) and the saliva test showed pebbles and small ferns under the microscope. So, I thought I may be in the transitional period and about to ovulate in the next few days (during my last cycle I had fertile mucous on CD12).
Early this morning before breakfast, I tested and only had pebbles and are therefore not in the fertile period. I am so confused.
Does this mean I may have ovulated after my period and I have missed the boat?
The only other factor to consider is that this is the second month after coming off the pill. I wonder if this would influence it?
Any comments or suggestions.
I think we should continue BD throughout the month and test only as a matter of interest.
Confused, needing help.
I find I get ferns every day throughout the month ... sometimes a bit stronger than others. So it is way too confusing for me to use. You are supposed to get some ferning and dots before ovulation and then heavy ferning during ovulation. I hope it works for you - I have heard a lot of success stories :)

I found maybe baby the hardest thing to get right your best bet is to do it at least 3 times a day and work out what time is your accurate reading, I had the same problem if i did it say in the morning never a fern and at night i got fern I don't know if i'm a one off or this happens to every one, just keep testing, but if you can use it in conjuction with looking at cervical mucus and/or temps you'll soon see when you ov.

I tried for a month a while ago in the mornings and always got the pebbles, think I might take your advice and try during the day too
I found that first thing in the morning my saliva was too yukky to work and i got a better result after i had had brekkie and brushed my teeth!! if you have partial ferning it means the levels are increasing but not that you have actually ovulated yet, i would try at different times of the day as well
I do not get any ferning if I test in the morning either - something to do with morning saliva. But I always test when I get home from work (Around 6pm) and I make sure I have had nothing but water for an hour or 2.
i believe with the Maybe Baby brand it says to test atleast 3 hours past eating or drinking anything (besides water I assume!) as the presence of those things in our mouth/saliva can alter the result...
I have been doing mine for the past few days however this morning i looked at it after the recommended 10 minutes and then left it for another 15 and looked again and it looked much better after that extra time, really looked like pebbles as they describe and not dots. I think i will try to put less saliva on there tomorrow!

it just makes me sad, I worry about you all obessing over these charts and things... I really do :hugs:
It's not an obsession. If I had a 28 day cycle then I wouldn't be obsessing at all. In fact I am always forgetting to take my temperature and use my maybe baby - so I'm not sure that is obsessing. I buy these things in order to help me catch that small window of opportunity I have every two months (if I'm lucky). I'm sorry Harmony but for some of us it just isn't as easy as just bonking all the time.
yeh dont worry about us we are fine thanks!!

Maybe Baby is a one of payment not a monthly expense so it isn't as expensive as you are suggesting.
I've purchased it as my cycle is irregular and I have no other way of detecting ovulation (CM doesn't work for me)
I've also started taking vitex, as many others (yourself included) do and that is a monthly expense but one I'm willing to make even thought finances are tight at the moment.
I don't think people should be ridiculed in the choices they make in TTC. I come here for support not condemnation.
Tomsmum2005 - I hope the Vitex helps. I am on CD53 and am so over these long cycles. Let me know how you go. It's hard when you can't detect what CM is doing and don't know when O is going to happen. I think I'll be on to that vitex if AF arrives this month.

I'm CD42 at the moment and no sign of anything happening, very frustrating  I have only been on vitex for a week so hopefully it does some good, I've heard positive things about it.
Thanks for your kind wishes.

hey guys don;t let some people get to you, everyone does it differently!!Me included. I am really irregular and i will do whatever i need to get preg. I have started vitex and i'm hoping and starts regulating my cycle, if that goes well i will buy a maybe baby. Not everyone can BD and fall pregnant right away. It is hard for some

Thanks Julie :) I think he's adorable too
WOW - i have 37 day cycles and thought they were long - i think i should stop my complaining when some of you are 42 & 53 (morganj tomsmum2005 ....
I am also thinking about buying 'maybe baby' has anyone heard any suvess stories?
I bought my MB the day before I found out I was pregnant with DS. So imagine my excitement when we decided to TTC 2 (yay I get to play with it again). I tried to use it a couple of times a day so I could get an idea what was a normal looking slide and what I should be looking for. There are also some sites on the net which show you some examples. (I forget what they are - you can google ovulation saliva test I think that should bring it up).
The best advice I can give you is to let it sit a lot longer than the 10min recommended. There were days that I thought I didn't get ferning that I should have, when I started leaving the slide to dry out fully (don't know if it had something to do with room temp or what) think I left it even up to an hour, I got a lot more consistent results (you could see the ferning growing stronger, then breaking up).
I used my MB to help me work out when would be best to bd for a girl, and we have been given about a 90% guarantee that this bubba is a girl!
LJ - as for your comments about being concerned about people using charts etc - I'm saddened that you are so concerned about these ladies. I get concerned about people who knock others who are seeking support.
It seems our discussion has been moderated.
Julie - I'm sorry if I offended you or any of the others by my comments that were directed to LJ. I felt that the two posts that she'd put forward in this thread weren't supportive and were innappropriate in a thread about the Maybe Baby.
If I've offended you, or any of the other ladies in this thread, I will edit my post to remove the last paragraph.
You certainly haven't offended me at all!! I just noticed that some of my posts aimed at some of the comments made have been removed. Interesting. I didn't think they were that harsh. And it appears that LJ's post have been edited/removed. Interesting. I wanted to show DH and they aren't there anymore.
Hmmmmm very interesting been moderated!!!!
Anyway Ive used Maybe Baby twice and been sucessful and yes have to agree you get better results letting it sit for longer. Pegasus how did you go about using the MB for a girl and what gave you the 90% chance?
The 90% is due to the fact that my OB has told me off my ultrasound, but me worried that there is still a tiny chance that he's missed something. When I spoke to a midwife a couple of weeks ago, she suggested that his equipment was way more accurate than her's and if he'd told me bubba's a girl then it was pretty much a 99% chance. I changed it to 90% due to me not wanting to be disappointed if it's a boy. (Not that I think I could be - any bubba is more than welcome!).
As for how to use it for a girl (I thought I'd read something in my Shettles book - How to choose the sex of your baby, but a quick flick through couldn't find it), I'll post more if I find the info I used (it was 7months ago now), but it was to do with noting when the ferns were first forming - bd'ing for the next 2 or 3 days, then abstaining until the ferns completely disappear. More info was printed in the leaflet in the box, but my box is in the bedroom and DH has gone to sleep, so I'll hunt it out tomorrow. (Shettles basically guarantee you 100% outcome of conceiving the sex you're trying for if you follow their advice to a T).
right thought it would be something like that....well we only had sex once about 4 days before ovulation so it was a complete fluke and anything could happen!!! we would like a girl (already have a boy) but of course would be happy whatever we have as all babies are gorgeous anyway and we love our little boy

Well, I have kept on getting pebbles for the past 3 days. BD on CD 8 after I found pebbles and small ferns in the afternoon, did not BD the last 2 days (CD9-10) as we have had a bad couple of days (death in family) and BD last night (CD11). Will test this afternoon to see if my pebble changes to anything else today. Last cycle I detected CM on CD12 (which is today so I hope I detect ferns). Wish me luck. :fingerscrossed: Thanks for all of your help.

hi,
i had the EXACT same thing happen to me. I onoly show ovulation in the afternoon! When I test again in the morning, nothing. very weird. I called the customer care help line and they had no answers for me. I worked out which days I thought I would be ovulating and BD on those days for sure. I think its a bit unreliable????

i am the same, i find i get results in the afternoon/early evening! i guess we are all unique and as long as it is consistent, i don;t think it matters
I've been TTC for 4 months off the pill and have been using Maybe Baby on a semi regular basis for 2 or so months.
1) My experience is that all the people who talk about not obsessing and tell you to throw the tests away originally conceived in their 20's. There is obviously more to say about that...but I'm not going to obsess about it.
2) I too find different results in the afternoon, night and morning (I have never done all three in one day - I was just excited and curious early on). The first month I used it I had a clear 2-3 day ferny spot in the middle of my cycle. Then I didn't use Maybe Baby at all for a month and my cycle was 5 days shorter than usual (before I was on the pill I used to have 28 day spot on cycles and this seemed to go back to normal for the 3 months off the pill until now). Now after a short cycle I seem to be showing very strong ferns every second day! It's strange.
Hi everyone,
I am also using this Maybe Baby thing! I don't have much of an idea about it though. Today I saw some big dark lines on mine but no ferning. Wonder if it's a transitional phase? No idea. Does anyone else get the big dark lines?
As for the comments earlier, it's obvious that the positivity in this thread is the most powerful thing by far. The support and discussion offered at this site is so important for women who can sometimes feel hopeless in their baby quest. Other comments are simply unwelcome at Bub Hub! TTC power! :smiliedance:

Hi Ladies
I also use MB, but I find that some months I get really clear ferning exactly when I expect to see it, and other months I get none, or it's really hard to read.
I do mine in the morning as that's what the instructions say, but I might start doing it twice a day. As I am starting OPK this month and can't drink water for a couple of hours before doing the OPK I may as well do the MB again. Can't hurt I guess.
When I got mine I was really excited and thought it would really help, but I am disappointed with the inconsistent results. I think that any bubbles in the saliva distorts the result, but I find it really hard to get a sample without bubbles.
So I am going to continue with MB and checking CM as in previous cycles but I am also starting OPK this month and started temping this morning.
I'm hoping that all these things together will get me my BFP!!
:babydust2: to all :)
I've been getting inconsistent results too, got very excited yesterday morning when there were the beginnings of ferns, then back to pebbles today
I'll try testing in the evenings... Also it seems easier to read when you use just a very thin smear of saliva. I think...
