Hooly Dooly i was tired last night!

My LO woke up for a 1am feed that i was totally not expecting seeing as she has been sleeping through until at least 4 or 5am for the last 2 weeks, and as i was preparing her bottle i was having a shocker! i missed the hole completely on the first scoop and then i couldnt remember what scoop i was up to!!

I thought i was doing ok with sleep deprivation, but it has only just hit me in the tenth week.

Can you prepare formula in advance? My mum says she used to prepare a whole days worth of bottles and refrigerate but i've just been making them up when she needs them?

i know how you feel and thats exactly why i started making up my DD's bottles for the whole day rather than having to do it in the night cause i always lost count and had to pour it out and start again.

I took DD to a tresillian week stay unit to sort out her sleep when she was 5mths old and they prepared the babies formula in a big jug that was enough for the day for each child so once i got home i did the same.

I brought a new plastic jug with a lid and a new hand whisk and worked out that if i used 1200ml of water (1.2Ltr) then i would need to put in 20 scoops of formula then would use the whisk to mix it all up and then pour into the bottles, pop the lids on and put in the fridge.

I found this to be the easiest way for me.

I make em all in the morning and put them in the fridge till i need them.

I got sick of forgetting how many scoops I was up to so now i have a pen handy and mark them off on my hand as i go, a dash for each scoop.:p

I used to use those tommee tippee formula dispensers for night time bottles, that way i didnt have to stand around waiting for it to reheat after being premade. I could just have the water ready at room temp (how she liked it) and then the dispenser had the exact amount in it needed for a bottle. No matter how tired i was, it was hard to stuff it up.

I have the water made up in bottles in the fridge before hand and the formula in the correct dosage in a container. That way you've measured it out when you're alert(ish).

I know exactly what you mean though :o

They say you can keep made-up formula for 24hrs in the fridge, so I used to make up a day's worth of bottles (eg 5 or 6 or whatever) and have all the bottles in the fridge. This way I'd wash, sterilise and prepare formula only once a day and it worked out great.

I always used a dispenser so I would make sure it was full before I went to bed. So much easier.

And the good thing with that is if you forget which scoop your up to when your filling the dispenser you can just tip it back in and start again:thumbsup:

I was so hopeless and always forgetting which scoop I was up to as well! Glad to read Im not the only one :o

Oh I've lost count of scoops too

I have heard of people making a jug up of formula for the whole day. I always made it a bottle at a time though.

My sis did this with both her boys.

I did this all the time. That was until i moved to QLD. i found that even a short trip out with the formula in an cooler and it would curdle before DS could get to it. So i bought a formula dispenser.

It is not recommended to have formula pre-made up. It is far more likely to be unsafe for drinking in liquid form than in powder.

Wow! That never happened to me when it was in a cooler even all day!( threw it out and didnt use that one ofcourse.)

The only time one has curdled for me was when we were driving and i was warming it up in one of those warmers you can plug into ur cig lighter.....decided it was too hot to warm it up so got a new one out n forgot about the one in the wamer for hours.:barf:

it was a shock to me too. Coming from Canberra i just had no clue how relentless the heat can be up there. I spose in brissy it wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad but the summer i moved up to Gladstone was a hot one.

i used to make a couple up in morning and then a couple up at night so that way i wasnt wasting formula if coop didnt drink as many bottles as i had made up. i continued this until about 10mths old and then just made them up as we went along as he generally didnt have a bottle during the night. lucky he is now on cows milk though which makes it heaps easier

At those times where our brains arent functioning properly..... being woken up and stumbling, fumbling in the kitchen in a mad desperate attempt to prepare formula ARGHHHHHH!!!!....
What i did was before i went to bed i made the forumla up in a bottle of 'luke warm water' and popped in the fridge ready to go.... There is nothing wrong with making formula in advance if done so properly and that is to mix it with 'just warm' water so it mixes properly... In doing so you prevent bacteria multiplying by the rapids as the warmer the bottle the longer it takes to cool down in the fridge.....
It was also recommended to me to put any made up formula at the back of the fridge....

I have tipped out a few bottles in my time due to forgetting the count..lol. Now I make up enough for each 24hr period in a Decor plastic bottle with lid. I work out how much water and how many scoops before hand..put in the water..then count scoops out loud as I do it. It's way better as I can offer odd amounts rather than throwing 50ml of a 180ml feed away because he usually only drinks 130ml. Now I just pour 130ml from the daily allotment.

I am so glad I am not the only one who struggles to count to 3!!! I have twins so most times am making up 2 bottles at once and quite often get to the 3rd scoop of the 2nd bottle and can't remember if it was number 2 or 3 (and that's even with counting out loud) Oh Dear!!!!:(
