We've just started offering more finger foods to dd lately and this morning i made her toast cut into 4 with some vegemite on it (which she loved  - I was hoping she'd hate the stuff like me!) She got through the 1st piece no probs, then the 2nd, she shoved a whole heap in and started choking, it took me a while to realise what was happening - she couldn't breathe! So i quickly got her out of the high chair, remembered what to do from 1st aid training, put her on her tummy on my lap and patted her back feeling for thr bread with my finger (couldn't find it , it was stuck further down) Kept patting her back, a little firmer and prayed and then out came a very slimy piece of bread!!!
All I can say to that is LEARN FIRST AID PEOPLE - just can't stress it enough!!

Isn't it horrible when they do that! Ozzy's latest thing is to not chew even one bite of food, everything gets swallowed whole! I don't know how many times we have had to whip him out of his highchair and whack him on the back!:banghead:

mmm.. yes vegemite, that awful stuff! Oh well, it's good for her. Yeah, she was fine after the choking, it was me and DH (when i called him) who were in shock! I still gave her the rest of the toast  just watched her very closely.

That happened to me a few times with DD1 too, when she was first starting out. I started cutting it up into tiny squares and giving it to her that way...She had it like that til about 18 months (she had no teeth til 11 months)! And....she still shoves food in all at once. I only cut her sandwiches into halves instead of quarters now, so she HAS to bite it!
I still haven't started DD2 on toast & sandwiches yet, as i'm a bit scared of the choking again....:o
Oh, and apparently wholemeal bread doesn't get as slimy & sticky as white....a bit easier for them to mash up?
Hope your DD is alright now....Its sure gives you a scare! :hugs:
I have always been scared of my kids choking on their food when learning with solids. I probably even held back for a while longer than I should've because of my fear!!
When I spoke to the health nurse though, she told me that as long as the food is soft, they will not choke as it will breakdown. She said it may look like they are choking, but in fact it is their gagging reflex.
How though, does she say it's not choking, when, like your little one, they shove a massive amount of food into their mouths that gets caught in their throat, that then stops their air getting through??
I feel for you and know how you must have felt as I have had it happen to me also!!

Thanks everyone. I'll try out wholemeal bread, see if it's better. Do you reckon it'd be better fresh or toasted? Or does it even make a difference?
I think toasted would be safer. Doesn't go as doughy
