Because if they do say:
It is this
It will work

then people will complain when something doesn't work or if the condition turned out to be something different. Then people will whinge and carry on about how their doctor isn't the miracle worker they thought they should be.

Seems like Doctors can never win, can they?

When I had a pain in my gut once I had a doctor ask my dh what he though it was LOL

Because they are humans who make mistakes just like the rest of us :) not the all-knowing mythical creatures they are expected to be!

Yep, yep, and yep. :iagree:

Because there are too many people out there who expect miracles. And too many people who are just plain whingers (Not suggesting OP is here, BTW!!:)).

Because some people will complain when their doc says "hmmm...let's see if this works", and others will complain if they say, "this will work". They can't win....

GP's are expected to know a lot of stuff. But they don't know all the details of every ailment and every treatment. Drugs work differently for different people depending on their individual chemical make up. My friend and I are on the same dosage of the same drug and we experience them differently.

Well they can't say 'this will fix you up' if they're not 100% sure. :p

I totally 100% agree. I think we need to appreciate free medical care - not saying the OP doesn't. We are SO lucky to live in Australia.

:iagree: So true. As a nurse I would add that there are sooo many people who don't take any reponsibility for maintaining their health and then expect to be given a magic pill to fix years of neglect and abuse. It's that old chestnut, 'my grandpa smoked for 50 years and never got sick!!'.

And what really annoys me - people who spend 9 months growing a baby and then expect the midwives, nurses and doctors to teach them how to look after it, [and by this I mean 35 year old solicitors who have never even held a baby, not 19 years olds who IMO have a good excuse]. Why is your baby crying? Hmm, it could be about 100 different reasons; I'm not psychic. Go read a book, or ask your mum, phone a friend. He's not sick; he's just trying to communicate. Hmm, I seem to be a tad irritable this morning...

Crikey, I don't wanna get on your bad side  BUT I think that's a bit rough. I fall into the 30 ish professional who read every bl00dy book and nothing could help with my dd re: crying. It takes a while to realise and come to grips/peace with the fact that some babies just cry a lot. You almost wish it was reflux or some such just so you can get the "cure" you know?

In a roundabout way, you have struck the nail on the head here.

I really empathise with your situation with your DD. You are an intelligent, established woman who had difficulties with your DD's crying. They should come with an operation manual, huh?

The point I would make here, though, is that lots of people "almost wish it was reflux just so you can get the "cure" "......and when the Dr says, "I don't think it is reflux, i think you just have a baby that cries (aka colic*), then they will often leave the consultation groaning about the doctor. Because they didn't attribute a baby's symptoms to a disease. Everybody wants the "easy" answer. Sometimes being told that there is nothing wrong is much much harder.

* - Colic has nothing to do with the Gastrointestinal tract. It is not a medical diagnosis. It is defined as having a baby that cries, for no apaprent reason, for 3hrs or more per day, for three days per week, for at least 3 weeks. It can be a symptom of somthing underlying, ie a medical disease, but mostly it is not. Just in case anyone was going to pull me up on this. ;):p
