Kindergarten and Preschool Teachers

Can anyone tell me wat i would need to do to become a Kindergarten or Preschool Teacher? is it uni or TAFE? wat courses would i have to do? would i need a year 12 pass?

You can do 2 courses at Tafe...

A Cert 3 in Children's Services lets you work as an assistant in a childcare centre

A Diploma in Children's Services lets you be a Room Leader in a childcare centre (so you get to plan the program and what the children will do each day...u also have to observe and document ect)

Then...at uni...

You can do a 3 year degree...a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) and that will let you be a preschool teacher

OR...you can do a 4 year degree...a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and that will let u be a teacher in a school...so like Kindy/Prep to Year 3 and even higher...up to Yr 10 if you want...

You don't need your year 12 to do the Diploma - just have to be sneaky about how you do it: if you do the cert 3 first (which I thought you'd done :confused:) then your get 6 months knocked off of the Diploma and don't need to have yr 12. Then you can get recognition of proir study at some uni's and get admission that way - and not need year 12.
Not sure about Victoria and teaching, but I can't work for the Dept of Ed as a teacher in NSW without my year 12 in english and maths :no:

MJ- Thanks for the reply! yes, i have done my cert 3 and planning on doing my diploma when Jaylen is 12mths, i dont want to miss a thing for the first year of his life. damn sounds like im going to have to do year 12 maths and english.

Im not sure about needing to do Yr 12 maths and English to teach in Vic... but I would assume you would. Those were the Pre-requisites I needed to get into a QLD or NSW Uni.

I see you have done Cert 3 already! :yelclap: I did my Cert 3 before going to Uni and got 4 credits plus credits for both 1st year pracs. Basically what it came down to was that I could do my first year of Uni in 6months and not have to do any pracs. But that might differ from Uni to Uni.

If you know you DEFINATELY want to teach in a school I would go straight to do your degree and skip the diploma. I know you can do the degree externally and at your own pace which would be great with having a bubba! :)

I would contact the Uni you want to study with and ask them a million and one questions about what your options are!
