I know they are a big no no, but I'm wondering how many people actually use cot bumpers? DS is getting his arms & legs caught in the rails & hurting himself but I am really nervous about using them

I don't have any but have been thinking about it lately too. My bub isn't getting his limbs caught but bumping his head on the cot bars and I thought the bumpers might soften the blow when he head buts it? :banghead: will see how he goes over the next few weeks - I am paranoid about suffocation though so that will probably win out.

I dont at the moment... but I too am getting sick of hearing the head 'thumps' - poor little guy ... :( I'm seriously considering it... seeing that Jack can rock on all fours... roll over and definatley move his head I'm figuring that the risk of suffocation HAS to be lowered??

I ticked yes I do use bumpers but not in the traditional sense I actually use them as a change mat!;)

Nope, I don't use them.

I too did think of getting one when DS started moving but he stopped getting caught in the rails pretty quickly! :)

I'm worried that I will be up every 5 minutes checking on him if I put bumpers in.

I did a search on this topic & a few people suggested using a porta cot until they are old enough to get themselves out of the cot rails. This is probably a safer option than bumpers.

I used one with both of my girls. Heard them thumping around during the night, so it gave them some protection from the hard timber cot.

Then again, I am definitely in the "Bad Mothers Club" as I also have teddy bears in the cot so DD2 (and DD1 at the time) could play when they woke up.

i use a bumper and have done since he has moved into his cot. it is the best thing as there heads cant bang the wood bars. its works for us.
i no there is a lot of do and dont with kids/babies but i think you do what u feel comfy with. my son also sleeps on his tummy snuggled into his security blanket!!

I think they look very pretty, but I am way too worried about air circulation and all that. So I dont use them

I put one on the cot when Connor was beginning to get mobile, he kept hitting his head. But one day I went in & his head was stuck under it... So, it came off straight away. I'd rather a few bumps on the head than my child choking. I will never use one again. I'm so glad I went in when i did!!

we use them.although DS rarely sleeps in his cot he has taken to sleeping in his pull out sofa lol. MIL made the bumpers for the cot so they are un-moveable and fit just right in the cot  DS can try move them and he jsut cries coz he cant lol. i know they are a big no no but it was the only way to stop him from hitting his head in his sleep and waking up crying with a bump on his head.

I have used them with my three & plan to use them with with number four. Not only do they save the head from bumps but they also make the cot cosier. I actually don't see what all the fuss is about them. I check mine regularly to make sure the ties are tight & I make sure the bottom is below the mattress so it doesn't stick out. None of my 3 have every lifted them or loosen them.

I've been told the problem with bumpers is more the lack of oxygen or something like that more than the pull and suffocation risk.

Then people argue that bassinets would provide the same risk :)

Hi

We got a cot bumper as DS kept waking because he was gettin his arms and legs stuck.

We bought a breathable bumper, but I have seen mesh ones that you can get in america that don't retrcit any way shpe or form. In saying that I have never had any incdientsa wher DS has got him face up againts the bumper either.

Hope this makes sense

Belinda

Pillows and bumpers are not recommended for babies under 12 months...Bumpers are no different to pillows... when a baby is strong enough to move about, there is no issue with them!! I seriously think that people overreact!

My Ds moves around a lot when he is over tired or has wind to get out before a sleep.

I weaved mine in and out of the cot slats...so even if the bumper did become untied..it wouldn't fall on him or he wouldb't get his head stuck under it as it's woven tightly between the rails.

It put my mind at ease!!- no head bumps and no suffocation.

Hi

I had the same problem with my bub. Waking in the middle of the night because he had his leg/arm stuck in the cot. I didn’t want to get bumpers so I got some light cotton material, cut it to shape and tied it to the cot. This not only fixed the problem of him waking at night but I also knew he could breathe through it if his face went up against it. It didn’t help with the head bumping but he only did this a couple of times before he worked out it hurt.

Good luck

Yes I do use them presently Eliza is a wiggler so I will see how she goes, she only sleeps in her cradle in the day time, so I can check her frequently, night time we cosleep.

She was also waking herself up with the bars and banging her hands on them, + the have animals on it so when she wakes up she doesn't cry instead she spends ages looking and touching the cow/sheep/duck etc lol

My DD wiggled up the bed and always banged her head on the slats. The danger is that they can wiggled themselves into a dangerous situation that they cant wiggle out of.
I didn't use cot bumpers until DD was over 6 months, and I bought the breathable one from Babies Galore.
