Hi,

There seems to be an endless amount of baby wipes that are full of harsh chemicals but I'm after baby wipes that contain no alcohol or chemicals, is there such a thing out there? Or can you make them yourself??

You could make some of your own just out of a nice soft material, cut it into squares.:)

I got some thin baby face washer from Big W or Kmart and then pre-wet a few with a mix of 1 cup cooled boiled water, 1tsp baby wash and 1tsp of tea tree oil.

Works a treat, but you could just use water and a spray bottle too.

I use a mix of sorbolene and water in a bottle...
Sorb is an alternative to soap and you dont need antiseptics on a baby's bum....
I also use (dont laugh) Chux wipes (or the homebrand ones that i can wash afterwards like i would Cloth Nappies....
they can be washed for a number of times before needing to throw away.... or definitely small squares of cloth also is an excellent idea.....

The chemicals in baby wipes IMO are unnecessary and lead to irritation and sensitize the skin more so contributing to more nappy rashes... I noticed an unbelievable change with ds once i made the swap from the wipes to 'a la natural'...
If he does get a rash i use Paw Paw although classed as a barrier cream is does still breath and a 'talc' free powder if need be... and plenty of air time....:)

The best wipes imo are bamboo velour!

I have a huge stack of baby facewashers and a spray bottle filled with camomile tea. I just wash the wipes when I wash my nappies. Cheap, easy, kind on bottoms and kind to the environment.

thankyou, i was thinking about using chux cloths or something similar but i still wasn't sure!

I'm using cloth nappies too and i'm always on the lookout for alternatives to the main streem baby products out there!

Hi there I too use the thin BigW baby face washers they are great not too expensive and last for ever (unless you have a black hole in your washing machine like I do that eats washers and socks)
I throw them in napisan then in the wash.
I found most wipes (esp huggies) gave DD a red bottom where as the washers with water works a treat with no redness (I used cotton balls when she was little and we were out as you can chuck them rather than carry them around with you)

You can try Seventh Generation baby wipes as they don't have any harsh ingredients in them, Great for when you are out and about!

I was a soft face washer fanatic, (*COUGH* Bum washer), during the first year.

Tiny bum-it was very easy to clean doing so.
I'd soak the soft cloths in warm water with a bit of lavender, prior use. Went into the hamper afterward.

She always had the softest babies bottom around!
:)

I did this under the recommendation of one of my midwives.

i use cut up squares of microfleece. I was going to use facewashers, but didn't like the idea that they may get mixed up and used on faces too (especially by grandparents).

I cut mine to the size of normal wipes and fold them up like baby wipes and pop them in a big baby wipes container.

I do wet them and keep them this way so they are ready to use - I don't put too many in the container at once as I wouldn't want them to go mouldy or smelly.

So far I haven't had any problems with doing this at all. They are also so soft on my baby's bottom and I actually prefer them to disposable wipes.

When going out and about I do use disposable wipes.

Another vote for washers and water here

Saves a fortune, too.

Since I have stopped using disposable wipes and disposable nappies and switched to face washers and MCN's there has been no redness, no rashes... AMAZING!:smiliedance:

I use huggies wipes, because I currently have 3 kids in nappies, and they are a lifesaver, but I also use wet viva paper towel it is fantastic, it doesn't break up or fall apart, I buy 4/5 packets when I am shopping and I use it around the house as well.
