Can anyone help me on this

My Bestie tryed for a vbac with her last baby(just over a yr ago)it ended in another caesearean, but it was very scary she was lucky she got in there when she did,her cervix tore from top to bottom.
So now she has been told by a GP that she has a Incompetent cervix,as you can imagine she is shattered :crying: she has a referral to see the head OB & see what her options are for further pregnancys, this would be her 3rd baby if she was try in the future.

Thanks any info helps:confused:

Hi there. I have an incompetent cervix due to a uterine anomalie, a bit like a bicornuate uterus. I had my DD last year at 32weeks, due to the incompetent cervix I had to take things really easy from about 24weeks. For subsequent pregnancies i hope to have the option of having a cerclage (sp) which is a stitch they put in the cervix which they remove later on in the pregnancy. I havent really looked into the pros and cons of this yet as Im not thinking of having another child in the immediate future so I cant give you much info about this. Hope this helps, good luck to your friend :)

I also have an incompetent cervix, however mine was caused by trauma to my cervix during a termination of pregnancy when I was young and stupid. I then went on to miscarry at around 17-18 weeks, and it was at this time that they concluded that I have an incompetent cervix.
When I fell pregnant this time I was referred to the high risk clinic at my local antenatal clinic hospital, and I had a cerclage/ stitch placed in my cervix at 14 weeks. At around 24 weeks I had an ultrasound which showed that my cervix was trying to dilate, and the stitch was essentially the only thing holding my cervix closed. I have had to take it easy since then, and between 24 and 30 weeks I was basically on strict bed rest, just as a precaution. I have now made it to 36 weeks, and will have the cerclage removed in about 2 weeks, unless I go into labour beforehand.
I am aware that in the USA (and possibly also here in Australia) there is an option of having a permanent cerclage placed via abdominal surgery, rather than through the vagina as I had. This might be a suitable option as it sounds as though a caesarian would be her best option.

Hope this helps, please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with, and good luck to your friends.

I lost my son Liam at 16weeks, 6 days to IC. Next time when I am lucky enough to fall pregnant again I will have a cerclage placed at 12-13 weeks of pregnancy. My mother also had an Incompetent Cervix so I am pretty sure it is hereditary. The only problem is that the docs didn't seem to think so, so they didn't place a preventatiive cerclage when i was pregnant with my son, they monitored me fortnightly with Cervical length checks. Sure enough in between appointments my waters broke and I gave birth to my son some hours later. In hindsight I had the classic symptoms of premature labour but I didn't know as I was experiencing very severe morning sickness at that time and just thought it was a result of that, now in hindsight and after talking to an IC forum for over a year I have learnt a hell of a lot about the condition. It is sad to think that doctors aren't proactive enough about preventative measures (cerclage placement) unless you actually suffer a loss first, this really gets my goat! There are two types of cerlages that can be placed TVC (Trans Vaginally) and Trans Abdominal (TAC). There are variations to the way each is placed and many high risk doctors/peris specialise in performing this procedure. After losing my son, there is absolutely no way I would endure another pregnancy without a cerclage and in conjunction with that also receiving specialist care from a high risk doctor. Life is far too precious and once lost there is no way of ever getting that back! it is unfortunate when we women have to experience such trauma and tragic circumstances..if you would like the address of the IC forum which I am involved with please pm me as I must say it is a wonderful resource for information on the condition and I don't think I would have survived without the support of so many women with the same condition.

I know you, coffeegirl (although it is by another name)... I'm on the other site as well, I just don't get there as often as I do here!

Just to let you know I had my cerclage removed at 37 weeks and am now 40 weeks + 2 days and still waiting for my bub!
