Hi there,

Am PCOS with all the lovely side effects. Went on Diabex (metformin) 2000mg 1 1/2 yrs ago to regulate insulin resistance.

As was told yrs ago would have fertility issues, DH and I recently stopped worrying about protection. We expected it to take a few yrs. We were wrong - am now 7 wks :).

I am VERY worried about going off Diabex at 12wks as recommended by my endo. HAS ANYONE DONE THIS OR KNOW OF WOMEN WHO HAVE - IF SO WHAT HAPPENED??

Pls help, I have become quite attached to this little miracle!

ETA, forgot to mention that they prob take you off the medcation at 12 weeks as thats when the placenta takes over the role of progesterone in maintaining your pregnancy, again lots of women with pcos are progesterone deficient)

Hello

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy!:yelclap:

Even though i havn't been on met/diabex whilst pregnant I know that lots of Drs prefer that their patients stay on the medication till they are 12 weeks  There ia evidence that suggests met/diabex decreases the risk of m/c in women with pcos (as you prob already know we have an increased risk of m/c thanks to pcos!)

Good luck with your pregnancy and don't worry!:flowerz:

Thanks cmd!

I'm happy to stay on the Diabex for first 12 wks, I'm just worried about a m/c when I go off it.:(

That's prob very unlikely to happen :hugs: If you're that concerned speak to your Dr about it and perhaps get him to wean you off rather than just stop (he'll prob do this anyway!)

Your diabex should be decreased gradually. I know women that worried they decided to stay on it throughout the pregnancy with no harm to their baby but you would have to discuss that with your dr.

Your dr seems to know at least to keep you on it until you are through the first trimester.

Best wishes with your pregnancy and dont get yourself too stressed over it.

Thanks ladies,

Will talk to Dr about it. No point in stressing over nothing yet!!!!

I stayed on metformin, 500mg twice a day until 12 weeks, then halved the dose for a couple of weeks and then stopped after 14. It was a bit nerve wracking, but after my 13 week scan I was happy that she was well secure in there.

I have a poll, you dont need to be a registered user to view or vote. Its on Metformin/Diabex whatever they want to call it. And what people did and their outcome.

it seems there is a lot of questions on what others did so I thought this might be the easiest way to see.

When I'm not pregnant, I'm on 2000mg of Metformin daily.

PCOS ladies have a slightly higher risk of early miscarriage & Met helps reduce that risk (up to about 12 weeks I think, off the top o my head) but there haven't been any studies showing the safety of Met to the human fetus (although anecdotely, it seems to be fine).

With my first Clomid bubs, I slowly ramped my dose down until my script ran out at about 9 or 10 weeks (bubs is fine, btw). With #2 (this bubs), I haven't taken any while pregnant at all.

Met also goes through the breastmilk...it's fine for bubs but my ob/gyn suggested not starting it again until I was ready to start TTC.

So, I've pretty much been off it since 2006 because I've been pregnant or breastfeeding since then...the only time I went back on it was for a month when TTC this baby.

I have read so much info on Met during pregnancy and when my Dr reduced my dose at 7 weeks I wished I had have listened to my gut and not done it. I questioned him on it but he seemed to think it was causing problems with my liver which it wasn't.

Anyway we reduced it and although I didn't find out til 12 1/2 weeks I miscarried at 8. It has never been confirmed it was the met but I believe it was.

My Endo told me I am staying on it through the first trimester and when my new GP said I should go off it as soon as I find out I was preg I said NO the Endo has told me to stay on it and she said well she knows better.
