Does anyone know why care centers charge parents for public holiday's when the center is closed? How do they justify this? ...Confused? I am.

Because they still have to pay staff...as all of those of us who are full time/permanent employees expect to be be paid on a public holiday...I think it sucks that there's not a lower rate as such (so just to cover staff, not 'activities' that would have occurred expense on the day) but just the way it is

well you still pay rent while you're on holiday away from the house :)

Because bills and wages need to be paid

My ccc charges for public holidays but offer you a replacement day, if your fees are upto date and they have a space available on another day. Not many centers do this apparently.

Because almost EVERY childcare centre is a business that is operating to make a profit!

And at the end of the day this is their main aim! The director is not doing a good job if a childcare centre is not making a profit!

Sad but thats just the way it is!

When you book a place, its usually the same day every day. The centre incurs the same costs each day, The rent still applys and wages insurance etc etc are all still incurred, even on public holidays, so essentially you still need to pay for that.

Centres should provide a "make up day" for public holidays, at no additional cost to you. A good operator will ensure this. Ask your director about it. We get make up days at our centre.

With regard to the other comment about centres and profit, as a parent you would hope that your centre is making a profit. Profit is a dirty word with many people, but who works for nothing? If your centre is unprofitable, it wont be around for very long. I'm happy for the centre where my kids attend to make a profit.
