View Full Version : Did anyone else catch the Life at 1 documentry on ABC last night?
It has several families and they follow the progress of a child over their 1st yr. The scariest bit was one woman who was having troubles breast feeding and she went to a lactation consultant and this woman was made to sit in a chair in room like an office and the lc kept throwing the poor bub at this womans boob at some sort of mad attemt to get the poor child to attatch and when the bub did the woman screamed and cried as she has cracked nipples...I was in tears it was truely horrible and they had no success (no wonder !!!) I hope no new mother sees this as what it is like to breast feed it was a terrible what they did to this poor woman.

Yes I watch, OMG that lactation consultant!!
The phone rang so I sent DP out to get it. She doesn't need to see that, she is already fearful of BF and stories that are told!
I don't belive they should have shown the hole seen as it was.

I have it on DVD. Life at 3 is on tonight and thats the one I'm hanging out for. I can't wait to see how much they have grown up!!!
Some people need to find a new profession. All LCs I've come across have been gentle and very caring people.

It is about REAL experiences. This sort of thing does happen way too often. Just as there are mean LC there are mean GP's, OB's, midwives, paediatricians and everything else too!
There are good ones as well though, ones you WISH you could meet again or ones you would send flowers and chocolates to.
That is such a shame though. :(
Yes one of our members and her DD are part of the series ;)

chunkydunks what channel and time is life at 3 on??? I couldn't see it in the tv guide
Yes I do believe it may have turned some women off bf and that is a big shame ,I don't think it was wise of the programers to show that . Good luck to your partner oneontheway your support is one of the most important things.
I saw it and thought it was very interesting, my heart went out to that mum though, she obviously really wanted to BF but was in agony.
The bit about Ben who is the youngest of quads made me sad though, they called him the runt of the litter once and the behaviourist said that babies who are born under 33 weeks are more prone to anxiety and depression, DS was born at 29 so upset me a bit.
Anyway I will be watching life at 3 tonight for sure!

I could be wrong but I thought ABC advertised that the 2 were aired on consecutive nights. I'll check.

 A midwife came in and pulled my shirt down and pushed my baby onto me (I had to pull back because he couldn't breathe!!!) after I pushed the nurse button accidentally while trying to find the light button.
Oh and Naiwen, they say that babies whose mothers ate foods high in carbs during pregnancy were less stressed.
Don't pay attention to it. It is all about you giving Edward lots of calm happy loving, not birth order or timing or anything. :hugs:

Sorry OP :o

I too saw that bit and really felt for the Mother, but that is what happened to me too...
I'm glad they showed it as I think it really expressed the reality of Breastfeeding & what can happen, it shouldnt put people off...
It allows Mothers to see that problems can happen & that they are not alone. Breast feeding isnt always easy...
I also couldn't understand why the mother who's child was christened 'couldn't do anything'' she sat and watched while her baby cried in the arms of a stranger for 45 minutes.
I thought she could have given her child some comfort surely!! I found that part hard to watch just as I did the lactation consultant part!
I love that little boy with the large family! He is just so beautiful, and his parents are seriously cool.:yelclap:

I think the footage with the awful LC was very important to see. I watch this the first time round and I still cringed and grabbed my boobs. Breast feeding is not a walk in the park for many women. A lot of people have the same image as the woman's husband did, that it is as simple as putting baby to boob. Far too many women learn that it isn't as simple as that for most of us when they try to do it and end up feeling like failures.

Seeing that woman groan in pain as the LC "threw" the baby at her boob, made me sad. But yes it was a real eye opener, I did enjoy the programme though:yes:
That LC woman brought back some terrible memories for me and I got very angry and got up and STORMED out of the room.

:iagree: This is reality and I also agree that is should be shown on television. More people need to realise that breast feeding is not always easy. I had a very similar experience to that lady and it was an absolutely horrid feeling. I tried private lacation consultants, the ABA and Tresillian for advice and nothing seemed to work for me. I also know that I am not alone.
My experience of breast feeding was extremely negative and I was devastated and felt like a complete failure when after six weeks of expressing and my milk drying up I decided to formula feed. If I had known the reality of breast feeding I could have been more prepared.
I don't understand women who think this should be kept hidden from society. Very dissapointing indeed.
Loved it! Thought it was very interesting! Hanging out to see Life at 3!
I did find it wierd when the mother of the quins refered to her son as a "little turd sometimes" (anyone catch that??)
I remember watching the series first time around - but I didn't have a one year old then so I didn't care as much :p
The LC did bring back some memories in the hospital of the midwife doing that to me. I cried when I watched it too. I don't know that there are many people who would watch that scene and not be moved by it. I think a lot of people think its going to be as simple as the husband said - put baby to breast. To let people know that there can often be issues, you are not alone and you are not a failure is great.
As green as I was about babies when I first had DD, I kinda knew that wasn't right how the midwife was basically throwing her at me so next time that midwife came around I politely said that I wasn't going to follow her advice and I'd prefer someone else to see me. My DH today said that if I hadn't told her to get nicked (as I say, very politely) and actually followed what she said to me he reckons there's a fair chance I would not still be BFing today.
And yes, did catch the Little Turd comment! :o
I remember seeing this last time and I have never forgotten that poor woman trying to breastfeed. I couldn't understand why she was sitting on a hard chair taking her breast to the baby instead of bringing the baby to the breast like they alway say you should.
I just found the whole thing very strange and stressful and my heart went out to her last time and goes out to her again.
