Hubby just found out he needs all 4 of his wisdom teeth out. *sigh*
We have basic dental cover, but not full hospital cover or anything.
Does anyone have any idea how much it will cost? I guess we will know for sure when he sees the dental surgeon, but I'd like to know a ball park figure.

Depends on how he has it done.... I went public inder GA and it cost me 2 years on he waitiing list  I think they forgot about me...
DH had his top 2 pulled in the dentist chair, and was quoted up to $250 per tooth, depending on the degree of difficulty. It only ended up costing $200 and that included a couple of quick x-rays the dentist did. The OPG was bulk-billed...
Hasn't gone back to get the bottom ones out though - was too much of a chicken!
BTW all his teeth were actually through the gum so that makes it a lot easier, even though the top 2 were impacted. We don't have any private cover.

Thanks for replying.
I am not sure if his are through his gums or not.... I think we will opt for him to have it done in the chair if at all possible.
I definitely recommend going to the dentist at UQ. She says unless there is a complication with them she always does them in the chair and she is CHEAP and an excellent dentist. I'll send you the details if you like? :D

Oh wow!! Please do !! Thanks Frany.
MY DH recently had one pulled in the chair - I'm pretty sure it was impacted as well - It cost $250 (inc xray) and we got about $150 back - it wasn;t something he enjoyed but one of the guys at his work had all 4 done at hospital and it ost him about $3000 so if he can bear it the chair is much much cheaper option
i had all 4 of mine wisdom teeth pulled last year, i went to hospital for this as i hate dentists so there was no way i was going to be awake, we do have full dental cover so we were lucky got out of it pretty cheap, but i think it can range from 3-5 000,

Hubby just informed my it has to be done by a surgeon, not a dentist as it is too close to a nerve or something :(
It may be possible in the chair. Here's hoping eh!
$3000-$5000 :eek::crying::hissy: :gloomy:

i had 1 wisdom tooth out last week, and cost me 375 for the one, in the chair:eek:
however, i have had not one minute of pain with it at all! best 400 ive ever spent!

I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out by an oral surgeon,it was a day stay at the hospital.I have hospital cover but not extras cover. The surgeon charged me around 1300$,so that was out-of pocket, and 50$ for the anaesthetist. You can always call up the hospital and ask them how much the stay costs.
:fingerscrossed: the chair is an option.. I hope it doesnt cost you too much or cause too much grief
:hugs:

I had my wisdom teeth out in the public system years ago and it cost me nothing! (Except for the inital consult with the oral surgeon and xrays and then my mum paid as I was still a student) Because I had it done in the country there was no waiting list either.
Maybe look at the public system?

A oral/dental surgeon would be far cheaper than a Maxillo and Oral specialist surgeon. I would be finding out who does the local ones for the dental clinics/healthcare card people who get free dental.
Another option would be to remove the molars in front of the wisdom teeth (which can be done in the chair by any dentist) which will allow the wisdom teeth to move down. It can be a particularly good option if his teeth are crowded. However the positioning of the teeth and the chances of them moving can differ and can be affected by age...
I was told I needed all 4 out by a maxillo surgeon who quoted me about $3000 just for the teeth work about 10 years ago which was larger as my roots were affecting the nerve. In the end I only got the 2 impacted ones done (by a dental surgeon) and even then I wish I had taken a molar out that had been damaged by one of the wisdom teeth. The remaining ones cause me no issues at all. I only wish I had done it sooner!

I had a wisdom tooth out today it was one of the bottom ones. It was sitting above the gums but was pointing towards the front of my mouth.
I had it out in the chair. It cost me $165 and my out of pocket expense was $62 my health insurance paid the rest.
I was lucky as I alreday had x ray films so diddnt need new ones.
It was not the eaisest tooth to pull It broke when he first tried (i have chalky teeth) and took him a while to get out. he said it was a tough one.
Its really sore now as its right on the jaw so I cant open my mouth as it hurts and when I picked up my Son from daycare they said I looked like Id been bashed as I had blood comming out of my mouth.
I know in Melbourne they have a dental hospital which is free of charge to have things like this done but you need to be on a health care card to get in and there are huge waiting lists.
I hope this helps.
