OK, over the last couple of days DD has started teething...finally!
She has all the usual symptoms...dribbling, chewing, etc and I can feel a sharp point coming up through her lower gums.
However, she also has an excessively blocked/runny nose...it's driving me crazy...wiping it all the time. (I know, many years of wiping noses to come.:D )
But I haven't read that teething causes runny noses?? Is this normal, or is she getting sick??

Thanx

Could be teething (or rather a symptom related to teething) or impending illness. When babies teeth the skin gets very thin and absesses form around the gum. The bacteria in the absesses causes runny poo, runny noses, sometimes stomach upsets too. My dentist told me this - he has 6 young children so he should know a thing or two about teething  .

Teething does NOT cause runny nose, runny poos, fever etc.
It is probably a little cold she has picked up.
People always assume teething causes many things which infact it doesn't. Babies who are teething tend to pick up more bugs as they are constantly chewing on something. Anything they can get their hands on is put straight into their mouthes. There for they pick up anything from a cod or flu to diarrhoea.

First of all, let me say that I am new to this site, you all seem so friendly!
My daughter is 15 months old and I have also noticed that everytime she cuts a tooth she has either a runny nose or poo! :) Although, I have read and been told that teething does NOT cause this, but the whole hand to mouth theory and meanwhile picking up germs makes sense. Why didnt I think about that?

I depends which EXPERT advice you decide to listen to...

As with everything else baby-related... some will say that teething does not, cause runny nose/poo, fever etc... and some will say without a shadow of a doubt that it does.:)

I used to think this was a myth (like the blue round a babies mouth means they have wind  ) BUT my DS is cutting his first molar this week and he has a runny nose etc and is unhappy with no other identifiable cause. Please come through tooth!!!

If you have ruled out other causes for a runny nose (ie: cold or flu) and know that baby is not otherwise unwell, then yes, I would be inclined to put it down to teething - and yes, it's a recognised and normal part of teething for many babies. :)

I also read the part of "Babylove" where Robyn Barker dismisses teething symptoms as a "myth" ;) , and that view often comes up in these sorts of discussions; and, prior to witnessing my own son teething and visibly experiencing the symptoms associated with it, I found credibility in Barker's theory, too. Now, however, I think it's hogwash. :D

I know when my son is ill, and I know when he is not; and I know when he is teething. For him, teething has always been accompanied by runny poo, runny nose, slight increase in temperature, and some unrest at night and trouble feeding. If my perfectly intact gums were suddenly forcibly ruptured by sharp implements over a period of time, I'm sure I'd be rather annoyed and show some visible symptoms, too. I know I did when my wisdom teeth came through.

Not all age-old Mother's wisdom is inaccurate; our modern professionals don't always know better. ;)

I'm beyond knowing what normal teething symptoms are now. Bug has been permanently teething for 3 months and only just starting to get back to normal. Before you ask what i mean by thatw.........10 teeth in 12 weeks. My happy smiley girl no longer exists and in her place is this yelling, grizzling, clingy 15 month old. Help!
