Hi there,
Wonder if any one has encountered or heard of bub developing severe nappy rash after stopping reflux medication (like zantac). Our son was on medication from 4 months for severe reflux/colic which turned out to be connected to several food intolerances/allergies.
At 16 months I decided to try and get him off the daily medication and we did so and all seemed fine.
Then after a week he developed really really bad nappy rash which he has never had before.
He is teething a lot at the moment (4 molars and an incisor coming through at once poor little petal!) so i don't know if this is a coincidence or if I should put him back on the medication and see if it clears. Almost nothing is helping and he has terrible runs and acidic poo/wee.
We are using pawpaw and curash powder (talc free) as he won't take any oxide based creams - they pull at his skin. It now looks like it is weeping and has gone into pustules. It wakes him in the night and he is in so much pain and distress. To top it off he now has a cold too! :crying:
I feel like we have had a really tough month with him, but no doctors have been able to find a link between stopping the medication and his terrible nappy rash.
Any advice would be most welcome - I guess we could just put him back on it again and see how we go, but i really wanted to stop it now he is over 12 months.....thanks!!

I wouldn't think that being weaned of the meds would be the cause.
Runny poo's and acidic wee could be a UTI or a viral infection. something i'd be getting the doc to test via a wee sample.
As it is weeping and pustules are forming it's best to continue with the paw paw.... My pot of gold!!! it is a barrier ointment but it doesn't allow the skin to overheat... Don't mix both though as then it will 'clag' and possibly cause further irritation... the infection could also turn in to atopic thrush (candida)... Pop into your local chemist and get some clonia cream and you can mix this with some zinc cream to protect the area further so it's a consistency that you can easily apply and will be comfortable on the skin.... this works wonders.... I assure you...
Alternate the paw paw with the clonia mix if this is the case (i've been there.... DS had it really bad after a seemingly innocent rash turned nasty)
It could also be an allergy rash and as you said 'teething' can do harsh things to a bubba... especially nappy rashes and in some cases runny poos....

My best bet would be going to the doc and ruling out a urine infection and making sure the rash doesn't need a medicated cream like clonia... Oh! and lots of nappy free time....

Hope this helps..... All the best hun x x

I actually had the reverse - my bub had nappy rash that we couldn't get rid of until he started the stronger reflux meds, and my paed told me this was normal as silent refluxers have more acid passing through their system, and subsequently out through their wee/poo so it mat burn their skin a bit more.

I find that the zinc creams work great with athin layer of vaseline over the top (the zinc treats the rash whilst the vaseline provides a light waterproof barrier for extra protection) - but obviously this will only work if it isn't a thrush type rash.

and of course if the weather would just warm up a bit so they can run around outside with no pants/nappy on...
