Hi

My DS2 has been put on Elecare to try & fix some problems. He's been having it for a week tomorrow, and I thought it was going really well. He'll now actually drink the bottle, instead of screaming the whole time. But since then he's had 3 diarrhoea nappies. Is this normal? Does it take a little bit for his body to get used to it? I'm hoping he can keep using it, cause as I said, the soy was causing him to scream everytime I had to give him a bottle, but I don't want him to have a constant upset tummy. He's in no pain or discomfort from it though.

Did this happen to you & how long did it last for?

TIA

It could just be his system clearing because sadly the soy may have caused issues with his gut ... So basically the Elecare has to flush it all from the system so it can then heal iykwim.

The other thing is it could be a tummy bug which is the next thing to rule out as a just incase. Otherwise yes it is possible for him to be reacting to Elecare some kids do sadly but you do have the option of Neocate if Elecare isnt working they are made on different bases .... My DS2 couldnt handle Elecare so we switched & havent had an issue since !

Elecare is a good formula. It aims to heal the intestine as well as treat an allergy/intolerance etc.... It may very well be bubs body going through the motions of healing (pardon the pun)...
Plenty of wet nappies and healthy weight gain should ensure that bubs is OK....
Usually after 2 weeks things settle down.
An idea to mention it though to your doc....

my son has been on elacare for the last three months, he had constant yucky nappies for along time before we changed over (allergic to soy and dairy), but about 1 week after using it they firmed up and have been normal ever since. i love elacare it has done wonders for my son just hate the smell of it.

It's always our issues, re-current, intermitant, unexplained diahorrea, Her bottom never stops bleeding, They think it's over flow but I don't think so!!!

No cause you would have substance like we do every so often if it were overflow !!!!

Get them to look at trying the Neocate ... Seriously the difference in G was HUGE in hospy once he changed !

Thanks ladies for your replies. I think I'll ring his paed tomorrow & see what he says. On a positive note (knock on wood!), I think the losec has finally kicked in & started working, so that's one less problem. If only we could fix the diarrhoea, everything would be great.

I've just ahd the same issue with Hannah- she has been slowly weaned on to elecare over 2 weeks and sat was her last breatsfeed- the last 2 days on all elecare she's had awful diarroeah- i am hoping the same that it his just her body getting used to it- first she was constipated on the elecare- can't win!

Alex had shocking poos until he had the neocate and immediately then he was fine so I was kind of expecting the same with Hannah.... :fingerscrossed: otherwise I'll have to ring her paed as well. Don't want to change as she's actually LOVING it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. It's fantastic having a baby who'll happily drink his bottle instead of screaming the whole time. We still haven't had a solid one yet, but there seems to be less diarrhoea now, so I'm really hoping it's almost gone & he'll soon be back to normal.
