View Full Version : Later Ovulation?

Hi

I am pregnant (albeit very early) with my first pregnancy and was hoping for some advise. Based on the 1st day of my LMP (11th Aug 08) I should be 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant however I just had an early ultrasound due to some spotting (which has now stopped) and this scan said based on the size of the sac I was 4 weeks and 6 days.
I do realise this is very early but if I did not ovulate exactly in the middle of 28 days ie on day 14 but maybe ovulated on day 18, could this account for the 4 days difference?

I am just hoping this is not because the baby has stopped growing and I have to wait another week to get a repeat ultrasound.

Thank you all so much for your help, this forum is so helpful.

Most likely mate...we don't all ovulated smack bang on day 14. I don't and my U/S have always been from 2 to 5 days difference, I always stuck with my original EDD anyway though.

Is your cycle usually exactly 28 days? Usually you'll ovulate 14 days before your next period, which means a lot of the medical profession says everyone ovulates on exactly that day, and a lot of women say they ovulate between 10 and 18 days before or so - any less than 10 days and there is not usually enough time for the egg to fertilise and implant before the next period strikes. If you were having a longer than 28 day cycle or you have a shorter than average luteal phase (the time between ovulation and AF) then that would account for the difference in dates. Also the scans are only accurate to a point, you've seen the picture, there's not that many pixels in your baby, the difference of one pixel can make a couple of days difference in the dates at this age. I'd say try and relax, it could be all just fine in there :hugs:

Thank you both so much for your replies - it certainly helps put my mind at ease and to get a better understanding of all this.
What did we ever do before the internet??? I think we as women are so lucky to have each other for support and to support and so thank you to everyone who helps out someone even in the smallest way.
With many thanks

Hi Kayte,

That is excellent news! What were you able to see on your ultrasound? I could only see the sac and no baby yet (which I expected).

I'll keep you posted as it is great to know somebody else at the same stage - thank you so much for your post.

Best of luck (at least you are one step ahead with knowing what to expect!!!)

If you look at the report that came with your scan you'll see they usually put "+/- 5 days" next to the predicted age, which means the age they've guessed is based on the "average" size at that gestation, however there can be up to 5 days difference to account for different growth rates. Also, they usually take a few readings and use the average fromthat, but if the pic wasn't that clear those readings could be out a littl ebit too.

Unless there are other reasons to suspect something is wrong, like HCG not rising well enough, or bleeding/cramping, then I wouldn't take much notice.

 I ovulate around day 19. Your dates are only a few off the u/s. My DS showed a heart beat at 5+3, but many have to wait until 8 or so weeks to see it. I wouldn't worry yet, and a big congratulations on your pregnancy :D

I ovulated on cd 17 and when I had a 6wk scan (due to previous m/c) I was meauring 5 days behind and had a hearattack but then I went back the next week as there was only an epty sac at 6wks and by 7wks I was measuring 1 day ahead. I was then told that 7 weeks is the most accurate EDD you will get and before the baby, heartbeat etc is present dates may appear off. So I wouldnt stress too much.
Good luck.
