View Full Version : Feeling Faint doing the GTT Test
Hi
I am very new to all of this as well as this being my first Pregancy.
I am 28 weeks and very excited over this whole pregancy.
The other day I was very close to fainting from work over load and not eating.
When I went for my Glucose Tolerance Test yesterday I actually became very dizzy, Feeling weird and hot clamy. So I thought I was going to faint so I let the pathlogoist know. when I asked my friends about it when they went for this test they never had these kind of problems.
I have never fainted in my life nor while I have been pregnant til now. I dont faint when giving blood either.
It was funny too as the baby was like having a party with the glucose hit so not just I was feeling like cramp but the baby seemed to be happy.
I hope I am not alone on this as I feel like I am alone with somthings that are happen with my pregnancy as I dont really have family to share my pregnancy with.

I felt exactly the same way when I had my test done - I was feeling a bit crampy in there but the next few hours I felt terrible and ended up going to bed really early so I was stressing that this might mean I am gestational diabetes but the test came back normal
I have spoken to a few people and they had a similar reaction so try not to stress to much - you are definately not alone

I have the same reaction when I have the test done as well. I was told it just happens to some people and not to worry. I got over it within an hour or so. good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
Thank you all for replying as it put my mind at ease.
I guess some of my friends make it look so easy when they dont tell of those different test and reactions plus the other little aches and pains that I have been getting from stretching.
I know it is a very big learning curve and I have a lot to go.
Hopefully next week I will get my results back and they will be all fine as all of the other test have been really good.
I just have to remember to eat more as I sometimes think that this is my problem not eating enough. I am hungry always since 25 weeks. I have only put on 6kgs my whole pregnancy which I am not worried about weight I actually thought that wasnt a lot for how far I am. So I will wait and see how I go next wednesday.
Again thank you :)
i had the same experience too but unfortuately my test results came back positive for gestational diabetes. hopefully its not the case for you too. i dont want to stress you about that though. i thought it was the end of the world when i ended up with GD but its not all that bad. it could be worse. dont stress too much about it.
Hi girls,
I acctually perform these tests (well not at present because I am on matternity leave)
It is acctually very common for some people to feel light headed, nausoues ,or faint durring the GTT,it dosnt nessisarliy mean you will have gestational diabetes/diabetes,unfortunatly for some people thats just how ther body reacts to the large glucose load that you have just consumed. As for bubby YEP they generally have a litle glucose party in your tummy they get all hyped up and go like little mad hatters or they can also go very very still while they take a nice little nap, again everyone is an individual.
You did the right thing by telling the collecter I gather they would of lied you down for the remainder of the test?
If not for future reference tell the collecter that you would like to lie down and stay there untill the test is over.
Its not a very plesant feeling . I only had the mini GTT (I scamed my doctor) and I still felt yuk I classed it as payback!!!
The test just affectes people so differntly. Just remember if you are having the 2 hour test you are dinking a large load of glucose on an empty stomoch and that sucks at the best of times let alone when you are pregnant.
Hi
It's good cookie you have some knowledge on this area it has helped
Thanks Cookie
I will keep it in mind if I have to do the 75 load. It's funny though I have had the 2 hour fasting GTT before a few years ago and I never felt like this and it came back normal.
I know that my Dr's is one of the best in my area and she loves making sure everything is alright and she gets cross at me for not doing these test as I have a tendancy to stress about them. one of the reason why I didnt do the 12 week scan.
I work in the health profession and with disabilities which can be really hard sometimes.
I know that I havent been coping too well with most things as the other night while working on the ward I was pretty sick from a lot of interesting smells which I havent been coping with any smells good or bad.
This was my first time I experience fainting.
I was flat out working I never even got to have something to eat which I think was part cause of me fainting.
I ended up staying at my friends place who live two mins from the hospital so that I wouldnt be driving 30 mins away and have anything go wrong as I live on my own.
when I woke up the next day it felt like I had a major hang over most horriable feeling as I had heaps and heaps of sleep I actually slept for most of the day at my friends place.
So it will be interesting to speak to my Dr next week.
I have put in for early maternity leave due to my tiredness and not coping with the smells. Downside is money but I rather be healthy and resting at this point.
One thing I always hoped to look like a movie star and maybe feel how they look.
I know everyone is different I have 12 weeks to go and hopefully it may get better once I am on maternity leave.
As well as I hope to look more pregnant as the comments I get from people that dont know I am pregnant, just asked me how much weight have I put on you've really got big around abdo area.
I just laugh at them and tell them that I am pregnant which puts them just as embarrassed about it.
I know it is just because the baby is transverse which I have been told is good for me.
I really cant wait to meet this little person as it has been a eventful exciting journey for me
Well enough of my blah :ecomcity: I must go and clean.
Thank you again.
