Hi all,
My 8 month has just developed a cold and woke every hour last night unable to breathe. She has had no sleep today either and is still very blocked and runny.
Any suggestions on what to do for colds at this age????
Many thanks.

My DD had a cold a few weeks ago and the Dr told me to get Fess for little noses.
All it is, is a saline solution and a aspirator (s/p). You put the drops up the nose then use the aspirator to suck out the gunk. I aslo used the baby vicks and lots or warm baths.
I would use the stuff in her nose then give her a warm bath and put some vicks on her chest and she would be fine for a few hours... then start all over again :banghead:
Goodluck.....:hugs:

Fess is fantastic - although DS would say otherwise. He's not keen on having it applied, or on the aspirator being used, but it does fix his nose nicely.

Saline Solution nasal sprays are what most doctors recommend I think. There's also Vicks Baby Balsalm...which works well.
If you just need to remove a bit of gunk, you can dampen a tissue, then twist up a corner and GENTLE sweep out some of the gunk. Don't stick it in very far and don't use a cotton bud.
Also give bub heaps of water. Colds can dehydate babies.
Vaporiser! I swear by it. It goes on when DS is asleep and the moisture losens the mucous (sp?).
Baby Balsam is great too rubbed into the chest and back.

Hi Charmain, How exciting we have the same first name but I have the e on the end of my name, you don't hear our name very often. Anyway back to the stuffy nose....when DS and DD had the sniffles I made up a saline solution (recommended by my child health nurse) of 2 cups boiled water, cooled before use, and 1 tsp salt mixed together. Using a dropper place 2 drops of solution in each nostril, 4 hourly. I found this really helped DS and DD and this solution is good for cleaning sticky eyes whenever you need to as well. The Vicks baby basalm is great to use as well. Hope bubs feels alot better soon!

Saline drops are great if the nose is blocked. Babies will get really cranky when they're blocked up cos they can't feed properly or breath! I read somewhere that babies can't breath through their mouth - no wonder they get so miserable:crying:
You can give dimetapp or demazin drops to dry them up but only if you feel they really need it. My DD goes completely crazy on Dimetapp. (We don't use it anymore)
But these medications can also help baby get some sleep (They will get better faster if they sleep it off)
I also found raising the head of the cot to help as it stops all the snot running down their throats:eek:
And also ..What the others said.....:)

I use Narium for my two. It's another saline solution, with an eyedropper. You fill it to the line and then squirt it up.

Thanks to all of you that replied.
I will try all of the above!!!! - anything for my poor littlen to get some sleep. Its so terrible hearing them struggling to breathe. I cant stand it.
Charmaine - yes, I totally agree. Dont know many other Charmaines. I think mine is the only one I have seen without the E.
Take care all and thanks again.

We have a six and half month daughter who had a slightly stuffy nose, green mucus and chesty cough since 4 months. She's been on one round of Rx for the green mucus with no help. In the last week, the stuffy nose has gotten bad enough so that she has difficulty sleeping. We've done everything we can think of: saline drops to irrigate the nose several times, vaporizer with the Vicks, eucalyptus/menthol chest rub, warm steamy showers, and nothing really works consistently. Not even infants Dimetapp and pediatric nose drop like Otrivin. Sometimes, I give her a bit of warm water in the bottle and that sometimes helps. A nurse told me that sometimes with reflux-ish babies, the stomach acids creep up the throat in the back of the nose and that may irritate the lining in the sinus and send the mucus glands into overdrive. I thought if I rinse out the throat just before bedtime, it would help. It's a thought, but I haven't been able to get it to work all the time.
Given it's winter, I am going to try turning down the electric heater thermostat and airing out the room several times a day.
My wife found out that you can buy little clear plastic sachets of saline solution from the chemist. They cost 50c and are a cheap way to refill the Fess/Narium bottle. Just an idea. :smiliedance:
