Hello everyone!

Well, i have some questions. I have looked back over previous posts and read sticky's and i have to say, im soooo confused :o.

So originally hubby and i decided to use sposies on our first after speaking with my sister who used cloth on her first some 16yrs ago and said that with the amount of times they leaked and the extra washing involved with soiled clothes, the $$$ really didnt offer much savings.

Of course there is the environmental side of things and we feel that there are pro's and cons for each - landfill vs water supply issues etc.

So the choice is coming down to cost.

Im now confused with all the different types of cloth nappies u can get (when i remember my nephew had cloth nappies, they were terry towling and we had to fold em, they were big, thick and chunky and quite often leaked out the legs). I can only assume that they have changed :)

Is there any in particular that are better than others in your opinions?

Have you found a cost saving by using cloth nappies? (keeping in mind, i will be going back to work at about 6mths).

My other thought is, nappy services. This way we dont have to purchase the nappies to start with and dont have the added ick of cleaning them lol. I know my stomach wont handle it.

I can see a definate cost saving if there is more than 1 child and the nappies will be used for each child etc, however i am not even totally sure on how many i would need, being a first time mum. :)

Your help is appreciated!

There are heaps and heaps of different types out there, but I have only used the terry flats on my kids, that I had to fold myself, and used fluffys over the top,

And dare I go out on a limb and say, that maybe they wernt changed enough or put on well enough, :o as mine dont leak out the sides,

I use different folds for different ages, so maybe that was it too.

Not offence or anything like that, :o

all the abbreviations can get a bit much on here... if i were you i would google something like Babybeehinds, Itti bitti, bumgenius... and read through the information about THEIR products.. they spell it out very clearly!

I used towelling flats with my first 2 baby's and started off using them this time around as well - they can leak at times, but if changed regularly & folded properly it's not too much of an issue.

I am also quite new to the world of MCN's (Modern Cloth Nappies) & all the various types etc can be confusing.

To start with I ordered a Trial Pack (you get 2 types of their nappies with inserts for $50) from Itti Bitti & also one Magic-alls from Baby Beehinds and this really helped me understand some of the terms. Having 3 types of nappy to look at rather than just looking at the pictures was a big help.

I really like the Itti bitti D'lish, particularly the snap-in one's as they are a very absorbant and a nice trim fit too. The only trouble with these is that they are sized so when your bub grows you will need to buy more. I have arranged to have a look at some One Size Fits Most (OSFM) next week which apparently last through to toddler.

Anyway I guess my suggestion would be to order a couple of different types (such as the Itti Bitti Trial Pack) and see what you think. When your baby comes along you might want to start off using disposables and try out some of the MCN's until you decide which you like best.

I think we have saved money using cloth. With my older 2 bubs I went back to work 3 dyas a week when they were 8 & 9 months old and we noticed the cost of using disposables on those days. I don't think washing them costs all that much more- I generally do a load of nappies every 2nd day with a 1/2 scoop of powder which doesn't cost much. The MCN's do cost more initially but if you are going to use them until the baby is toilet trained - so at least 2 years and possibly again with future children then there would be savings.

Have a look in the bubhub directory under shops, there's a section for nappies that has links to websites. Trial packs are a good idea, this way you can try some different styles & brands to find out what you like.
