View Full Version : Foam or spring mattress?
Which is better? What should I get?
What has been your experiences?
Thanks!
Ive been told that spring is better and more hygenic..Spring mattress will last longer.
when i was buying a matress the guy basicaly said if its for his bedroom and he will be using it every night then dont get a foam matress they arnt that safe, or breathable?
he could be talking rot to get better sales, but i was more interested in a inner spring matress rather than a foam one anyways i find they are more comfy, i hate sleeping on any foam matress.
oh meant to add - this is for my toddler.
i was buying the matress for my older ds who is 3 ;)
i think a spring matress you can buy for a couple hundred $$ and it should last for a long while, i got mine for $199 on sale, he told me it should last until hes around 10. a foam matress i dont see lasting that long it might go a bit yuk by then but you can buy matress protectors, i got mine from the hospital.
How long will your toddler be on a cot mattress for?
I bought a foam mattress for DS as it was more comfortable. It was only needed for 2 years as you need to buy a new mattress for each child.
Its personal preference really. They say foam can go out of shape- mine didnt have enough time to :p.
ETA: I dont think you are meaning cot sized, I'm sorry :o. We bought DS an innerspring single mattress with double sided pillowtop. It is very comfortable, and still has plenty of support for a little persons' growing body.
Hmmm I didn't know you are supposed to change the mattress every 2 years....
I was thinking of getting a cot mattress for either the toddler bed or having a spare one near my bed.
The foam one seemed softer but I wasn't sure whether spring one was better - or why....

i dont think she meant a new mattress every 2 yrs- i think she meant that your supposed to have a new mattress for every child, ie not have a used mattress
We have foam matresses for the kids with matress protectors...and a spring matress for myself and dh....and we have to turn it every month.
Oh sorry guys. I meant our cot sized mattress wasn't used for long enough to go out of shape, so thats why we went with foam (and its more comfortable).
By needing to get a new one, I meant for each new baby you need a new one (SIDS recommendation). DS only used his for 2 years or so, so thats where the 2 years came into it- it didn't go out of shape at all in 2 years :).
Sorry again :o.
Oh, and I will mention, one family I nannied for had a cot mattress innerspring that they used for 2 children (:shame:) and you could feel all the springs very easily- ouch!
HTH.
I found the foam mattress was no good for the toddler beds with metal bars ,it sank between them.I also found the foam mattress ended up with a indent of where bubs slept the most where as the innerspring one stays nice and flat all the time.
I prefer spring for all of us. I agree with the PP about using it on a bed with slats.
We got out inner spring cot mattress for $99 on special. It has a fitted cover (zips on and off) with mattress protector on one side.

Innersprings are usually what is recommended.
I had mattress made out of weird fibres for DD when she was in her cot. It wasn't foam, but it wasn't innerspring either. It was some hippy thing. :p lol.

We have inner spring for DD - it was actually cheaper to get an innerspring than a foam one up here ($119 for the inner spring and from $89 - $139 for foam hmmmm as if I would pay more for foam than an inner spring)
DD had an inner sring in her cot too and only used it for about 9 months -(bassinette till 3 months and in a singel at 12 months) I didn't realize I should be replacing it for #2 It has only been used for such a short time and has been stored in plastic since. Hmm will have to look into a new mattress then.

I'd go inner spring. We even had an inner spring mattress for his cot & will be doing the same this time too.

Wow, sounds like I'm pretty much the odd one out
I have a breathable foam mattress on my cot - I'll be getting a new one once DD2 is ready for the cot, because it went a bit musty in storage.
I have foam mattress on both DD1 and DS bed. DD1 has had hers for nearly 2 years now, and not the slightest dent. I'll buy an innerspring when they are a bit older and heavier, and through peeing the bed, and throwing up unexpectadly :D
That was my choice anyway ;)
