I have a five month old with silent reflux and I have been trying to feed solids (rice cereal) for several weeks with no success. She either isn't interested or isn't able, I'm not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know I could wait until she is six months old when the tongue thrust reflux is less but I was wondering if anyone could shaire their ownexperiences.

Also does anyone know how many babies have silent reflux? When I try to explain it to other people they don't really understand and think it is the same as normal reflux (which, of course it is not at all). So does silent reflux affect one in 50 babies or 1 in 100 or something? I hear of a few other around but not many.

Hi Lisa,

My DS has silent reflux. I'm not sure at all about the statistics, but i thought that silent reflux was common. Lots of people i've spoken to have known about it.

Anyway, my thought on the rice cereal would be that she simply doesn't like it. Solids shouldn't be making the reflux hurt more as they are heavier and shouldn't be refluxing. I would suggest trying to give her purreed veggies or fruit for some variation. I do however realise that your bubs is only 5 months. It is strongly reccommended that you don't feed bubs solids until 6 months....but in the end it's your decision as a parent. We felt the need to give our DS solids at about 5.5 months as he was always sooooo hungry. As a result it's meant that he's been able to stretch his feeds a little further apart and sleep longer as he's not waking up hungry.

My DS wouldn't eat rice cereal either...he hated it. It also constipated him. As soon as we introduced veggies he was off an away.

I hope this info. is helpful.

My son HAD silent reflux too, it eased off at about 7 mths and i even changed fomula once (from thickend back to regular) just to make sure.
I too thought S.Reflux was pretty common, althou i havent met many ppl who's children do/have suffer from it, and like you, when i tell other ppl that my son had it they look at me confused, and ask what that is and how its different then reg reflux.
I agree that maybe she maybe just doesnt like the baby cereal - not many kids do! Have u tried mixing in some pureed fruit or yoghurt, thats wat i did, althou it didnt work for long lol.
Another trick is to make up a bottle as normal and put a little bit in the bottle, just to thicken it a tiny bit, and then peirce some holes in the teat with a hot pin. I had to do this as my son was back then and still is today, a very hungry boy, and he wouldnt eat solids (tounge reflex thingy too) so id get him to drink it and boy o boy, it worked! Just make sure u have enough big holes peirced, other wise bubs will get frustrated with it.
Oh this all helped my son settle alot better too!

Good luck with it and if u need any more info from a previous silent relux experienced mummy, just Pm ok!
Chin up!!!
