Hi guys :)
Im sorry if there is already a thread about this, but my girlfriend wants to try the turkey baster method so I thought I would get as much info as possible for her.
Basically how do you do it, and is it safe/reliable.
Thanx a bunch

Hi babymama

This is a great question and will be interested in finding out myself just for interest sake...

I have seen a doco on surogacy and some of the women, who were fertising their egg with the "parent's to be's" sperm and used a turkey baster if that makes sense:rolleyes:

let us know

About 7 years ago friends of the family conceived using the turkey baster.
He is in a wheelchair and while he can ejaculate it takes alot of work. She had surgery to remove a growth on her ovaries. There were paying the specialist alot of money to get his sperm and put it inside of her. They did this several times with no result.
In the end they decided it was a waste of money and they'd try at home. So anyway long story short he would cum in it and she would put in straight inside of her. Second attempt was successful.

You asked if it is safe and reliable. It is as safe as the quality of the sperm - so any potential donor should be having a full health check up done before you start the process - would hate to go through the whole process only to find his sperm weren't swimming or that he had a transmissable disease.

Reliable? If it is done pretty quickly after the sperm are emitted there is as much chance as normal intercourse - in other words you need to know your cycle, optimum days etc.

In terms of freezing them at home - my understanding is that this process just kills them - freezing them requires instant freeze as in lab conditions, so if she wants it to work she will need to have a donor willing to provide "fresh" specimens at the appropriate times.

(Don't ask how I know all of this - not from personal experience but have picked it up here and there!)

I know of a women who did this and is 9wks pregnant with her first, and she got pregnant on her first attempt.

So yes, it does work and from all accounts it's safe.

I don't see why it's not, I mean realistically it's probably no different to people that use vibrators (not talking from personal experience here people, just saying).

Reliable? If it is done pretty quickly after the sperm are emitted there is as much chance as normal intercourse - in other words you need to know your cycle, optimum days etc.

I'd say that unless orgasm is achieved the chances are lower than normal intercourse. During orgasm the cervix 'dips' the help the sperm (and let's face it they need as much help as they can get;)). Not saying that the cervix needs to dip, but it helps.. without an orgasm the chances are lower.

When we were going to conceive the fertility doctor said that this method is not terribly reliable and advised us to do IVF (ICSI) instead. My Partner is in a wheelchair and also has difficulty ejaculating, as the example in a previous post. So there is nothing (physically) wrong with me, but IVF was still suggested over this method.

Here I am Jen!

HI There! :wave: I have tried turkey basting once before and had no success. The quality of the sperm has a lot to do with the success. Your best bet is to go somewhere they do chryogenic freezing - the average house hold fridge/freezer just aint going to cut it.

When I tried I have a sneaky suspicion I wasn't ovulating at the time. So make sure you have absolute confirmation that you are ovulating! Otherwise its just going to be a waste of time and effort. Keep track of your cycle, take note of your CM, and use OPK's. Also, an OPK is only positive if the test line is as dark as or DARKER THAN the control line.

Jason Lovett - the only reason we went against chryogenic freezing is that the owner of the sperm had to present when they released it. As my husband would be in Iraq at the time, that didn't really work for us. I'm not sure on how it all works with sperm donors either. Though, as I said before - fresh sperm in PLASTIC (not glass cause it sticks to the sides) is best.

If you have a friend who wants to donate, but you dont want to do the deed with him; have him ejaculate into a condom (spermicide free) and use it straight away. Use a plastic oral medicine syringe (smallest you can get is 5mL) and suck up the sperm in the syringe. If you can, orgasm cause that makes your cervix dilate and a lot more receptive to sperm intake. Whilst orgasming, I kept the sperm syringe under my arm pit - that way they would stay at body temperature. Tilt your pelvis as much as you can when inserting them and try to let gravity do its work. Whatever spills out though is gone though, so dont try and 're-use' it.

There is a websiteHERE (http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/homeinsem.html) that has a bit of information that might help out.

Best Wishes! Let us know how you go :thumbsup:

Hi guys

This discussion is very interesting, but I wonder how recipients who use 'outside clinic' sperm donation get satifactory answers to the things that a clinic would automatically take care of.

Consider the following that a clinic would check on that some recipients and donors might not be aware of...

* Is the donor in the high risk HIV group?
- The need to have the donor AND HIS PARTNER tested for HIV, with two tests
six months apart;
- Has the donor OR PARTNER had any peircings or tatoos in the last 12 months;
- Are the donor OR PARTNER intraveneous drug users, or have hey been in the
past?

* The need for donor AND PARTNER to be tested for Heps and syphillis

* Has the donor lived or been to the UK for any length of time in the last five
years and been exposed to BSE (Mad Cow disease);

* Is the donor jewish with a greater chance of Tay Sachs disease, a genetic
disorder; Asian donors are also tested for a particular genetic disorder

* Is the donor either diagnosed, or a genetic carrier of a long list of genetic
disorders; and are there any that might be replicated in the recipient's family
causing a greater impact on any children born eg. CF

* A clinic will automatically record the donor's identifying details for future
reference if the donor conceived person ever wants to seek them out, or
perhaps if there are medical issues that need addressing. It is a way to
preserve the rights of any lives conceived to access the other half of their
genetic history, which is often impossible when using a donor outside the clinic.

Just a thought.

Cindy
