In a well observed study of children it has been concluded that people no longer need to buy children expensive plastic toys, as hours and hours of fun can be had with normal everyday house hold items...

....well that's what I 'the observer' have concluded about my kiddies...:D

Check out these...(give me a sec to see if this works:o)

I find my kiddies focus more and for longer when we do stuff like this...Yeh- the toys are overflowing the storage tubs, but they don't seem to hold their attention for as long.

Please share...or tell me I'm not the only one getting my kids to do the house work for me!!

Brilliant thread and photos!! And some mums don't know how to entertain their kids *big grin* I would spend about 30 mins hanging out the washing with DD1 while she chose the pegs by colour and we counted them!

I remember asking my MIL what they did before lego and she said 'they just played in the saucepan cupboard':D I was glad I at least had a plastics cupboard!

Well done Calenjacksmum!!!

-one of many fine examples of why I don't have a neat organised plastics cupboard!!

Oh and cheers for the well done!:D

Alot of the toys my kids have are bought by others for presents etc. Then they (especially MIL) get all upset when the kids (mostly DS) have trashed the toy trying to create something else with it  Like the Leapfrog pad that became a surfboard (without the water) cos it made better sounds. DS's latest is putting a bucket in the back tray of his trike to make a cement mixer - complete with water, sand & gravel. The only thing he's missing is the cement mix

I think alot of these educational toys are taking away kids imaginations as they don't get the opportunity to create anything with them. They seem to be 'this is how it works & it's the only way" type of thing

:iagree:

I love the cement mixer idea!!!
I give my littlies some home made glue and the junk mail or old wrapping paper to go crazy with, they stick it all over old toilet rolls or cardboard that comes in packaging, cereal boxes etc. (don't have photos cause my hands are usually covered in goop!)

They also have a ball making imprints and 'fossils' with playdoh, they press their toy dinosaurs, blocks, shoes, oop no thats the telephone!....ummm pretty much everything - they love it (I love the clean up bit too:rolleyes:)

They are just gorgeous!!:) And look like they are having a blast!!

It takes more imagination to come up with your own "toys" than to buy them...Good on you! :D

Great thread !!

I remember having about 6 babies and Mummies over at my house one day and all DS's toys were spread around the room and you know what ..... The kids fought over the saucepan and wooden spoon
It is so true ... My DS also LOVES his plastic container and pegs ...

Well, your studies definitely show that kids don't need expensive toys, that's for sure! Great pics.

We do pretty much the same things, as well as make cubbies from sheets, play with kitchen utensils, plant vegies, blow dandilions (which my dd calls bubbles), draw on the driveway with chalk and play with toilet rolls, pipe cleaners, rice and coloured cardboard.

My 2yr old DD is OBSESSED with colouring in, and wooden puzzles.....

She has a mile of toys that barely get played with.... its usually her books strewn around her room.... or she pulls the craft box out.... or her baby gets so "lovingly" pushed around the house in the stroller.

Plastics cupboard is another hit here.... her favourite thing is to make a tower out of containers.... or the utensils drawer (minus the sharpies).... the rolling pin is a favourite....

Lately she has taken to pulling out my mags and parenting books.... must be reading up for motherhood in the very distant future....

She has a mini tramp but for some reason jumping on the beds is much more entertaining....

I don't begrudge all the toys she does have, but an quietly thankful she has chosen the more creative avenues all on her own!!!! :yelclap:

Awesome pics!

DS loves loves loves the icypole makers - you know the tray with the sticks in it?

He gets paper (torn from junk mail usually) and pretends to make all different ones - and we "eat" them all afternoon - "num num num".

My 6mth DD's favorites are a brown paper bag and a silver foiled plastic biscuit wrapper!

The exxy lamaze caterpiller only holds her attention for a few mins but she'll happily crunch up and play with the paper bag for AGES.

She had a wonderful time with the Big W catalogue that Grandad gave her on Wed. (before I got to read it too!)

I find it amusing that someone wasted money to research this, I thought it was common knowlegde???

My DD is 5 and still happy to play pretend with random bits of what ever. I think its sad that people lost track of this, though dont get me wrong DD has tonnes of expensive toys (my way of compensating for her bordom as an only child) but her favorite of those is a chalk board which is still pretty basic.

I agree! My DS spends more time playing with things around the house then any of his toys, so this christmas he is just getting books!

BTW, Gorgeous children.

 Yep ...it was me just being tricky and trying to get peoples attention!!

A lot of the threads lately have been , "the books say..., the latest study shows..., specialists recommend..." ....I just felt like bein' a bit cheeky and light hearted!!!:p

Thanks for the replies...
My kids loved scrunched paper too, bubbles are a blast - but for some reason my kids like 'imaginary' bubbles too!! - i blow the bubble blower butt with no liquid (suits me, no mess).
i have converted a cupboard into a chalk board, but DS1 likes to stamp on the chalk, then collect all the little bits and say, "aw, look mum lizard poo! whats he been eating?" - Steve Irwin fan:D

My fav toy that I did find expensive ($100) for a little play kitchen is one that holds their attention...they have to 'cook' with my real saucepans though, none of this plastic pretend rubbish mum!! And play dough and dry rice make the best ingredients.

That's fab! DS likes to glue things - so I cut up old mags and catalogues (random lines or pics of objects) and he glues them to bits of paper. Love the clag :p
