Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else took their placenta home. I took mine home and buried it. It was what kept my baby alive and kicking while it was in my tummy. Magical thing :)

Anyone else do the same?

LOL! Doesn't look very appealing. But it's quite amazing when you actually think what is has been doing inside your body all this time. My midwife showed me mine and explained the bits to me.. not that I remember it all cos I had just birthed DD, but from what i DO remember, it was quite interesting!

Nah, I ended up with a caesar and didn't even give the placenta a second thought - was too wrapped up in the baby! I've seen them before through my work, so I wasn't overly interested.

Burying it would be a lovely thing to do though

But people do bury it, eat and some leave it attached to bub til it drops off on its own. Not anything I would do but each to their own I have no probs with what others do with theirs

How come you couldn't take them home? That sucks! I specifically told my midwife I wanted to keep mine. She gave it to me in a tiny, handy little bucket with a lid hehe.

I enjoyed seeing it and was really interested in it...I had a big and healthy one the midwife said. Seriously it was HUGE, even they said it was a big one must have been why my belly was so big because DD came out small....I was all Placenta:laughing:
I didn't think of buring it but that is a nice sentiment:)

 I find all that sort of stuff gross. I remember when I was in the pushing stage and I got up from my sitting position on the bed and I pulled the cloths and sheets off the bed that had been stained with blood and you-know-what else comes out when pushing ;). I kept throwing them off I couldn't stand the sight of it. The middies must have thought I was strange!

Yes, I kept mine too, absolutely!!!

I planned on planting a tree with it but as I am renting it is still waiting in my freezer for the right time and place.

I talked about wanting to keep it with my Midi's pre-natally and had it in my birth plan so even when I was rushed to theatre because it would not come out and I was hemoraging (sp) because of it I still wanted it and I remember hearing while in the theatre them saying (must have been when they finally got it out) " No, she wants to keep it" and they put it in a little tin bucket with lid. They must have thought I was mad considering it nearly killed me (well it wasn't its fault, it and bub wern't ready to come and they forced them - but thats another story) but I still respected it and feel connected to it. I think it means even more to me because of what happened..... and now you all think I'm crazy too  oh well. Each to their own.

Here's another good idea for your placenta......

Roast Placenta

1-3lb fresh placenta (must be no more than 3 days old)
1 onion
1 green or red pepper (green will add colour)
1 cup tomato sauce
1 sleeve saltine crackers
1 tspn bay leaves
1 tspn black pepper
1 tspn white pepper
1 clove garlic (roasted and minced)

Method

(Preheat oven to 350 degrees)

1. Chop the onion and the pepper & crush the saltines into crumbs.
2. Combine the placenta, onion, pepper, saltines, bay leaves, white and black pepper, garlic and tomato sauce.
3. Place in a loaf pan, cover then bake for one and a half hours, occasionally pouring off excess liquid.
4. Serve and enjoy!

No we didn't. I didn't even remember about the placenta, I was so out of it with ds. And I forgot with dd as well. Now I feel so bad..

If I could turn back time, I would take both home and buried it. In my home country, ppl say placenta is the baby's friend. When the baby kicks, it because s/he is playing with the placenta :D

I kept my placenta too...in fact, 16 months on I still have it in the freezer :D

I have been meaning to bury it but am waiting for my backyard to be landscaped...then I will do it. I was thinking maybe underneath a fruit tree like an apple or peach.

I think placentas are so amazing. I still take it out from time to time and marvel at it. I almost can't bear to part with it :o. Sounds silly I know but I'm such a sentimentalist. It just reminds me of my DDs amazing homebirth :goodvibes:

For us it is a cultural thing to keep the whenua (placenta). We buried our childrens ones at our Marae (tribal land) under a tree and said a blessing for each one. It has alot of meaning for us and the kids will always acknowledge them when ever we are back home.

When I was studying midwifery we learnt of various different cultures and their views on the placenta and there are a few cultures that do eat the placenta as it contains alot of nutrients.
What doesn't sound very appealing to us is pretty normal for others.

ROFL men! DH was interested in the placenta too, actually.. Although we were looking at it while the other midwife was cleaning up DD and getting her dressed into warm stuff.. We probably should have done that, but we were too busy looking the placenta LOL.
hahahahaha, I cant believe you were looking at the placenta thats so funny. My poor boy didnt get clothes on till he was 4 hours old hehe. I just wouldnt let them take him, he was so squishy and nudie it was nice. They touched him and said he's getting a little cold how about you have a shower and we'll dress him. Reluctanly I agreed lol. Maybe next time I'll take a look at the placenta so they can dress bubs. The nurses might not be so cranky at me then:laughing:

My man at the time was the same!! Fascinated by it! I remember he said "that is soooooo cool" LOL!!
hahahaha, I thought Andrew would pass out but he proved me wrong lol.

Mysonmysun I don't think you're mad! I don't think any of us are mad hehe. I think they are amazing, wonderful things.. I just didn't want to take it home but I can understand why many families do
:iagree:

Placenta Cocktail

Ingredients:

1/4 cup fresh, raw placenta
8oz V-8 juice
2 ice cubes
1/2 cup carrot

Method: blend at high speed for 10 seconds. Serve. A tasty thirst quencher!
:barf:I read a story about a lady who hours after homebirthing her bub she cut a piece of placenta and ate it, its apparently supposed to help stop haemroging(sp) Still cooked, blended or raw chewy placenta - not for me lol.

Still googling.....apparantly Tom Cruise's favourite is Polenta Placenta :chef:
OMG thats too much LMAO

no, i wouldnt. not my thing but have nothing against those that would. i didnt even see the placent first time. i hemorrhaged (sp) after having DS and was too weak to even care, with DD i asked to see it coz i wanted to see what one looked like and i was grossed out by it lol. even more gross was part of it was still left inside me and i had to pass it out over the next few days. it was the size of a golf ball and was quite freaked out by it even though they told me that it would happen. is that TMI about my placenta

eating your placenta is SO healthy!
not only does it help stop the after birth bleeding, but if you freeze it and eat it reguraly after the birth, it helps with PND!
having said all that tho, i didn't eat mine and don't think i will! but like i said, we did have a lotus birth.
my sister had a spoonful of her first babies, not s ure what she did with the second.

but all animals eat their placenta. =]

Each to their own.....if you like placenta then so be it. :p

It does give me visions, though, of all these post-op patients leaving hospital with little doggie bags.

Man: "So, what do you have there, ma'am?"

Woman: "Oh, I've just had a hysterectomy, and this is my uterus. We have been so close over the years, I couldn't bear to part with her"

Man: "That's exactly how I feel. I just had my large colon removed...but boy!! have we been through some rough times together. He's coming home with me!!"

:laughing::laughing:

Okay, joking...please nobody take offence. As I said, if you want to eat placenta...ummm....just make sure you hold your nose. :D

I brought it home and we buried it under a lemon tree for Sam. It never occurred to me that I wouldn't bring it home.....it was part of him and I couldnt let them just throw it in the rubbish:barf:

Although I am not Maori, I am a Kiwi and relate to the Maori concepts behind burying the whenua - I see it that for Sam it is his Turangawaewae ( place to stand ) - a place he can always come back to.......although we do have a giggle that it is a lemon tree - he will always have a place to pee!

A newborn isn't too big.. I can't imagine a newborn and a newborn sized lump would be too bad. :p

I have never expected it to smell bad.. Apparently it just doesn't.

Many women do sprinkle it with salt and lavender to help preserve it and well.. Lavender is nice. :)

Both DH and i are Maori so we kept all of our childrens whenua (placenta) and hubby took them back to his family land where he is from and buried them. He planted a Pohutukawa Tree (NZ Christmas tree) on top of our firstborns whenua.
Each child we've had, hes taken it back to the East Coast and buried it under the tree.
We kept our last DD's whenua (9mths) and I'm hoping to take it back to NZ when I go home.
Someone mentioned that it needs to have a special clearance or something to go through customs?? Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm not interested in taking mine home, but after 2 c/s's where it didn't even occur to me to have a look, when this bub is born I want to see the placenta. Just out of curiosity. As others have said, it's been a part of me and bub for 9 months so I should give it a little attention :D

As for the recipes, my DH is a chef and we were even talking about placenta dishes with our Ob. Maybe hubby could whip something up with it while I'm in hospy and bring it in to share with the middies?:barf:

the cord dries up and falls off and instead of just being a cord you've got the dried up placenta as well to deal with =p

OMG AWESOME !

Hadnt even dreamed of anything like that !!!!!!

I didnt think about keeping Boof's because I dunno too busy worrying about others I suppose. I knew about planting it etc but just thought like with everything else that if I did anything like that it would be 'weird' & people would be like

With G I soooo wanted to keep it & sooo wanted to use some for helping with PND but yet again caved for feeling like a right twit asking the middies for it. I was already a novelty cause I had a doula etc. So we waited until I birthed the placenta & I whispered to G we would now cut the cord & we did so. I viewed it & off it went ... At the time I honestly didnt really care because I was on such a high from the birth but ever since ive regretted it something shocking especially when suffering from PND again :(

I know better so next time will do better

Shame :hugs:. You would be surprised how many people ask to keep it though.. When I mentioned it to my middie she was really nice about it and even told me that lots of people prefer to keep it. So don't stress about it :) I don't know of anyone who has eaten it, but I think that is fairly common too. It's better than suffering for months at a time, I am sure :) And as much as it erks me (just as taking it home erks others), if it helps, that's great!

I have a book about the development of baby in the womb from day one to the end. It has a HUGE picture of the placenta in it and has a whole section dedicated to how gooda job it does etc. I think that's what made me become "passionate" about it. Cos it does so much without us even thinking about it!

Yeah a lot of people when they hear of 'eating' it they see a woman sitting down with her knife & fork LMAO !

There are so many ways you can 'eat' it without realising if that makes sense !

It can be cut into tiny amounts like the size of a capsule then frozen. You then basically put it into your mouth & swallow, so tastes nothing more than an ice chip ! Others dry it then use it in capsules to take.

So its not as bad as it seems :D

I guess a lot of people dont see it for what it does.

Its basically the babe's life support & womb twin.

Its just as precious as baby is

I didn't get to see mine. After a 60 hour labour and a c/s I didn't even think about it. I wish I had now but I dont' really have any regrets, I was so out of it by then, it might have freaked me out to see it before I was stitched up - didn't really want to see any blood. I didn't even get to see the chord or it being cut which I do regret but I was just so happy and relieved it was over, I wasn't thinking about what was happening. I put so much effort into a birth plan for a natural birth, I probably should have had one for a c/s and then maybe things would have been different.
