OK, I'm not the world's worst cook, I'm usually pretty darn good in fact!:chef:

But today for the first time I decided to give homemade custard a try. Frankly up until now I couldn't really see the point in making my own given that it's much easier & not much dearer to buy it already made! However I have some custard powder in the pantry from another recipe, so I thought I'd try it out.

Now, am I doing soemthing wrong, or is homemade custard supposed to look like yellow water?! I mean, it's the right colour, but it's not the right consistency at all!! Store-bought custard is nice & thick & wobbly - this isn't at all!!

I followed the instructions on the packet to the letter.

Did you whisk it while you cooked it over the stove ?
Also it does thicken as it cools i found that when bubs was little i added less formula so that it was thicker so maybe you could give this a go ?

Well I actually followed the microwave instructions. I thought there'd be less washing up to do. But I did everything exactly as they said to do it.

Hmmmm.... not sure where I went wrong...

So your's does end up all nice & thick & wobbly?

Use more custard powder. It's the corn flour in it that makes it thick and gloopy.

Giving it a bit of extra time in the microwaves helps that, too.

more powder.... and more micro time....also as it cools it should thicken. :fingerscrossed:

OK, so here's what I did...

The packet said two tablespoons of custard powder, 1 tablespoon of sugar & 2 cups of milk.

I was just practising so decided to make some for myself first before making DD's.

(2 cups of milk seemed like an awful lot though...)

It said to put the custard & sugar in a micro-safe bowl & add just enough milk to make a paste. Then add the rest of the milk gradually, whisking well after each addition. (Did all that) Then microwave on med for 2 minutes, stirring after one minute. (I microwaved it on 50%, stirring as they said). Then let it stand for 1 minute.

It was just completely runny! So I added about another 1 1/2 tablespoons of custard powder, first mixing it with a little of the other runny custard to make a paste. Then I microwaved it for another minute. Still nothing. Then another minute on 70%. Still watery! I left it to stand for an hour - still watery!

On the plus side, it smells really nice! :)

Don't bother with the 50%/70% business. Microwave it full blast.

If that fails, keep the amount of sugar the same but use more powder and nuke the bejesus out of it again.

Cool! Thanks Beany! (I'm pretty sure my microwave has a bejesus setting....)

I actually never use the sugar as i dont want bubs with a sweet tooth.
I think you may have a dodgey pack because ive done it in the microwave a few times with no dramas either ... how weird !
Hopefully the next batch goes better

Yeah, I thought I'd do bubs lot sans sugar. I'm beyond help though ;) so I thought I'd put it in mine!

Hmmm.... maybe I'll try again tomorrow. If this next lot fails, I'm off to Coles to get my 89c back!
