I just sent DH down to the chemist to get some Demazin for DS2 and they would not sell it to him as DS2 is under 2.
They told him from September you need a prescription for a child under 2.
Has any one else heard of this??

Yep, had to get a script for my bub the other day :( if you go in and say yr child is 3 or 4 they will give it to you, but the boxes now do not state the dose for children under 3. Apparently the reasoning behind it, is because parents where using it to knock there kids out and it also cover up more serious symptoms....my pharmacist also said that some of the cough/cold medicines slow down the babies respiratory rates which is not a good thing.
Forgot to mention it is now script only for all cough/cold/allergy medicines for children under 3

Yep, i work in pharmacy and it's correct. It can actually do more harm then good, especially when not used correctly, so is now a prescription item.

Yep its new legislation !
They dont actually do much half the time & parents usually use them incorrectly !
My doctor wont prescribe it at all.... Not because he doesn't trust the care givers, but because there are many alternatives to it that a 100% safer than giving them ingredients which without the caregiver knowing can potentially as 'reAllytee' said can do more harm than good....
I certainly am not knocking anyone.... If it works for you and your little one responds well to it then all is good....
Yep, my chemist has had signs up for months. My GP also won't prescribe it anyway so it doesn't bother me :)

Thanks girls
I had no idea...haven't used it since DS1 had a cold last year. This is the first time DS2 has had a cold and I just went for the same thing I had always used.
Thankfully he seems heaps better today and there is no longer a need for it.
Yep, we got told that when we went in there today, I had DS3 in my hip, but I was after more antihistamine stuff for DS2(he is allergic to bees and we need to have it on hand in case he gets stung), they thought it was for DS3(who is 15 months) and said we needed a script for it.

Even though you may not misuse it it's still been proven to do more harm to the young ones than good, which is also why many doctors won't prescribe it. I think it's a good idea
All childrens meds now are on prescription for kids under 2, except for panadol, dymadon etc.
You can still get the Brauers homeopathic range, and although they've had to amend their packaging to reflect the new legislation, it is still the same product and safe to use on bubs over 6mths ;)
Your little one's dont have to suffer....
Go the old fashioned way.... vicks baby balm on the souls of the feet (with socks on) upper chest and back. try a vaporizer in their room or simply burn some 'pure' eucalyptus oil (3 drops) in the room and blow out once they are asleep or go and get an electric oil burner (the effects lasts for ages) Fezz nasal spray/drops is a godsend for runny noses also and dries everything up making it easier to breath also....
I've used over the counter medication but found they didn't work very well.... The 'old fashioned' way i say.... Worked for our mums and grandmums..... Why not for us too...:)
As for phenergan.... Good question... I cant recall if this is prescription... but i remember buying it a long time ago for DS (who was 5) for travel sickness... He was really bad and it also helped him to stop itching his ezcema when it was really bad.... They asked me a million questions about it before they gave it to me.... and rightfully so..... Mmmmmm may have to ask tomorrow, have to go to the chemist anyway....
Phernergan and other antihistamines definitely on prescription now for under 2's. The whole reason they did it was people misused meds like phernergan for the purpose of sedating their kids.
My DS is 1 and we use Dimetapp when he has a bad cold.
Had to get it on prescription, my doctor was only too happy to provide it.
I was shocked to discover that it isn't the infant drops, but rather the regular adult Dimetapp on half the lowest dose.
I compared some of the leftover infant drops I had and found that the adult one has less of the active ingredient.
I use it in conjunction with vicks and a vapouriser. If it will help my DS feel better, then I'm all for it.

Yep phenergan also is via script, i had to get it this morning for my son. The doc gave him a script for Maxalon to stop vomiting and they no longer make it in liquid form ( unless u go to a compound chemist) so they now use Phenergan instead,,,i never knew it was used to stop vomiting!

I may be wrong but I thought this was brought in months ago - like back in May? My chemists haven't been selling Dimetapp without a script for months - DS had back to back colds around that time - I'm in Qld so it may have been brought in earlier up here? We've had to practically buy shares in Euky Bear and other Eucalyptus drops to get my little ones through the cough and cold season!

I'm afraid I was naughty and lied and said she was almost 3 instead of almost 2.
She's an inch taller than her 3 year old cousin so she passed the pharmacist's scrutiny.
It was 6:00 at night and she was coughing and hacking and had difficulty breathing through her nose.

There are many other ways besides dimetapp to ease a blocked nose. You can get the plug in vaporisers which are FANTASTIC and baby balsam, also the fess for little noses which come with aspirator...as desperate as we can be sometimes it's not recommended for under twos for a good reason. Hopefully next time you could try the other alternatives first. There's also natural remedies available like the brauer range

 A pharmacist refused to sell it to me a while ago because it would soon be becoming prescription.
Weird thing is, Demazin IS prescription.. Dymetapp is not.

The changes were made in May but did not take effect until 1 September. However many pharmacies decided to voluntarily refuse to sell these products over the counter after May.
