This arrived in my inbox today. For the first time in Australia's recent history, there is a chance that midwives could be empowered to offer gentle birth alternatives to women wanting the birth with the Midwifery model instead of the Medical model. This would enable some Australian midwives to practice in a way more similar to New Zealand midwives. At the moment, 97% of Australian women give birth under the medical model. 80% of NZ women choose the Midwifery model. It's possible that if the option was available and funded & resourced as it is in NZ, more than a mere 3% of Australian women might choose woman-centered, one-to-one, midwifery-led care with a self-chosen midwife. And surely all women, including those who prefer the Obstetric model, would appreciate having the choice?

Could you all please consider reading and voting in this poll being conducted,
"Are midwives as safe as obstetricians".
This morning the Federal Government released the discussion paper around maternity services. It is imperative that there is positive media around the idea that midwives are safe. The campaigning to be done by the medical lobby groups will be extreme.
Please forward this on to anyone who you think may see midwives in a positive way and may vote.
