View Full Version : how much from a cup or straw
My son is 9 months old and is eating solids X3 a day but he is not drinking very well at all from a cup or straw - he would have a max of 50 mls a day and the rest is from me. Is there anything I can do to help - I have only given him water does anyone suggest fruit drink or something like that to encourage him to drink. I want to wean him to just 3 feeds in 24 hours.

I just kept offering water. I can't remember the others, but DD2 wasn't drinking much water until about 10mths. She was only on 3 feeds a day at 9 mths and wasn't suffering. at 10 mths she went to 2 feeds and now she has been on 1 feed (night time) for a couple of weeks. :crying: she started refusing the morning feed.
I don't like juice for kids, it is totally unnecessary in my opinion.
DS has had juice maybe once or twice in his entire life.
DD2 has never had it.
DD1 drinks it now, but not often.
keep an eye on the number of wet nappies and whether they seem dehydrated.

:iagree::iagree::iagree:
Keep with the water it is so much better than getting into juice habits which are bad for their teeth esp if they take it to bed.
DD didn't really start drinking until we moved to Darwin and it was really hot and she'd dropped the day feeds.
I'd just keep offering and see how he goes but don't stress if he is still feeding often he is getting all the fluids he needs.
I agree with the above comments. My DS is 9 months old and he's only just started having around 200ml in a day thats over 5 attempts mind you. He has 3 feeds per day but does need one over night:hair: so 4 in 24 hours. He's not suffering at all. Plenty of wet nappies. If bubs is thirsty chances are he'll drink. Oh and dont give him juice its bad for his teeth and they get used to sweet and wont drink water in the end anyway.
my son loves his water, we don't give him juice. just keep offering...
he also loves soy milk (we started that at about 13 months tho)
I will continue with the water, I am not a fan of juices but I wish he would drink more, perhaps as Leisa said if he is thirsty he WILL drink.
I should have added that I am pregnant again (about 7 weeks) and I have noticed a reduction in supply and a reduction in wet nappies, still pooing fine (no constipation). I don't want to have to use artificial milk as I think I can get him to 12 months before the colostrom comes in.
Anyone had any experience with this?

I thought I would let you know that Aidan also had a reduction of wet nappies when I cut his breastfeeds back. My CHN said its common, keep offering him water whenever you can with every meal and providing he isnt hungry and not dehydrated it should be fine. I mean if bubs wet nappies are cut in half then maybe you should speak to a CHN or GP or ring ABA they might have some advice on how to boost your supply. Hope this helps :D I stressed a bit because I heard of formula fed bubs drinking a bottle of water at a time:eek: but he soon started to pick up his drinking. Oh and congratulations BTW:flowerz:
