I found pullups to be a HUGE hinderance to toilet training my DD#2.
We did much better when we went to undies cold turkey, like we had to with her big sister back before pullups were around.
Try the old fashioned toweling training pants, or perhaps let him try choosing some jocks with pictures on them.

I found the pull-ups were too much like nappies for DD1. Once we went to normal undies she was really good. Only a couple of accidents in the undies, then she realised it was yuck to do that, and made an effort to actually go to the toilet.... We went shopping for new undies together, and she picked herself out some Tinkerbell & My Little Pony ones and loved them! :D Problem is, she wants to buy new undies every time we go shopping now....

I have a girl and I imagine there IS a marked difference with boys and girls in regards to potty/toilet training because of the different methods used and different skills needed.
My DD (3) used undies during the day and pull ups at night. We called them night time undies but she would occasionally wet them in the morning as opposed to using the toilet - until we put her in regular undies at night and she has never had a problem since! Pictures definately help too!
I found also my little girl didn't like doing poos on the big toilet because of the splash factor so I taught her to drop a piece of paper in the loo to minimise splash first and she was fine after that.
We also had a reward system. We worked out together a particular 'prize', for her it was a Barbie and after 5 days of no 'accidents' we went shopping and bought the Barbie ( a $5 one from Woolworths!) We talked about this daily so she understood why she got this extra present. She loves it!
Have also been told to try a ping pong ball in the loo with boys - it's fun, wont flush and helps their aim!

thanks for the tip as i will have to remember that one when ds (now 5 month) is old enough to be toilet trained.

well we looked at it like this, the pull ups are really dear, especially for a begginer - (we went thru 3-4 pairs of undies a day easily), but we also do alot of travlling (like 2.5 hours worth of driving to town) so we do use the pullups while in town, but when we are home she gets to wear her pretty little undies, that she loves!.
i also found that after declaring that when the box of actual nappies in her room was gone that was it, she could wear a pull up to bed, was a bit premature, as she would wet right thru the pullup at nite, luckly however (due to a stuffup on dads behalf) my 5 month old ds nappies fit her so she wears one of them each nite to bed.
i do find that if she is wearing a pullup she will be more hesidant to tell us she needs to go, so she must be reminded. so all in all the pullups are uselss around home, when she has the ability to go when she wants, but in town are great - she is getting to the stage where she is now telling us she neds to go when a pullup is on!
We didn't ever use them. We put DS1 into training pants or undies and as soon as he started going through the night with a dry nappy he stopped wearing them to bed.
He's only had a couple of accidents and that's been when he's had a bad dream.
I had the same with my son....he took forever...has been night trained for ages though...that just happened of his own accord. The pull ups were useless he just thought they were nappies. Even now he has accidents, he gets too carried away playing and can't be bothered going to the toilet...lazy boys!! He loves weeing in the garden (gross I know) but at least its not in his pants.....good luck, I think they decide in their own time!
