View Full Version : Which Booster Seat?
Hi,
My 20mth old DS has a hipod booster seat, purchased from Target for about $300. The problem is that he can use his foot to push the bit that loosens the straps, once the straps are loosened he just takes his arms out, then wiggles his legs out. He goes from strapped in very firmly, to out and standing up in under a minute.
I am thinking of just buying another booster seat, and putting my 7mth old in this booster seat as she is over 8kgs now. As we live in a regional/remote area I will probably buy online....
Could someone recommend a booster seat and explain the jargon of booster seats to me... thanks!

We have a Safe N Sound Maxi Rider II for our 3-year-old DD. We bought it because it has a greater weight range than most booster seats (up to 26kg) and anchors into the anchor points of the car making it incredibly steady and safe. I wouldn't buy anything different, TBH. They are expensive - but worth it for DD's safety :)

Highly recommend it and you can use the H Harness too which is what we use.

Hi Girls, For my 4 year old twins, I have a Secure Vario Max. It anchors up to the anchor bolt in ur car, and we use the h harness with it.
We used to have a Pegasus from Safe N Sound, until we had to slam on the brakes one night due to someone cutting in front of us, and the Pegasus snapped as a result.
The Vario Max is made of blown plastic, and it heaps more secure than the Pegasus' we had.

what are the weights of your kids????
Forward facing isnt a milestone you want your kids to reach too soon..keep them rear-facing aslong as possible
your 7 month old should still be rear facing in a convertable up untill they are12kgs...its so much safer..
my neice is 2yrs old and has just hit the 12kgs so now she is finally forward facing.
depending on your 20month olds weight s/he should be in a harnessed seat till 18kgs...then move to a H-Harness in a booster till the max. weight of that seat.
KEEP YOUR KIDS HARNESSED AS LONG AS POSSIBLE

wow I have never heard of keeping them rear facing till 12kg.. so my 27 month old son is only 10kg should he be rear facing?
You had me a bit worried about the rear facing issue. I just went out to the car and checked my 7mth olds seat that we have turned around to be forward facing. It actually says on the tag that for safety reasons it should be turned around from 8kgs upwards.
Also the booster seat my 20mth old is in has the same harness as a baby seat. It is one of those ones that comes with a harness and when the kids outgrow it you can get a H harness, then when they are bigger still you can use it with the car seat belt.

That would mean that you seat is only safety tested up to 8kgs rear facing. you can get them that are safety tested up to 12kgs. I wouldn't put a 8kg child in a booster, even a maxi-rider or trek 8 or similar.
As far as your boy goes you could try deter him from playing with the adjustment thing or start using the harness with it so he can't adjust it.

Dammit- oh well will have to work something else out
Hope it's ok hopefully my question will be answered otherwise I'll make my own thread up but what is the most safest carseat with the highest weight range that I could get. ATM I have DD just a baby capsule car seat that goes to 18kg but I want something that will last longer (26kg). I don't care what it costs to an extent under $500 would be great but just let me know what it is and how much and I'll go from there. She is only 10kg right now but I want to laybuy something to use when she gets bigger. Links would be handy. I was going to get the Hipod from Target but with a closer look at it I wasn't happy with the safety of it. Any help would be great. I want the carseat belt to go through the booster/ car seat, I want it compatable with 5 point and H point harness, and a ankor (sp?) belt that straps on the back of the car.
Try the maxi rider - there is a new one on the market

My son has one of these although not the trek 8 only difference is the hood. He loves it. My son is 27 months and only small 10kg but is 90cm so his eyes were about the level of the birth-18kg seat, after chatting to his doctor and the ppl that install the seats safely they suggested one of these types. As it was unsafe to leave him in his birth-18kg seat.
I think it has all you are after. hope it helps.
Thanks for the link. Do you know how much it is and is that the new one on the market?
I have the Maxi rider 2 and bought it for $399 about a year ago but the Maxi rider AHR is the latest one now.

We will be getting one for DD (hoping to get it soonish so she is settled in it before #2 arrives) she is only about the 10kg mark too (at 22 months) We liked it better than the maxi as it seemed to have a closer fit IYKWIM, and she sat in it happily in the shop whereas the maxi she hopped in and strait back out. I am going to get one of the extra clips that fit on the maxi (you can get replacement ones from britex for $28.50) and they fit the same buckle, so that the antisubmarine thing is covered. (once she is bigger obviously) hope I helped.

Does the trek 8 bolt in??

Yes we would have considered it otherwise.
For my mind it is very similar to the maxi except for the fact that because it is not a britex seat it doesn't come with the clip that goes over the protectaharnes and into the bottom strap IYKWIM. But as I said above the clips are all the same (we actually clipped the trek 8 clips into the maxi - so If you get a replacement clip from britex you can use it with the trek 8)
The other thing we found that the trek 8 is a narrower seat with all the extra padding and with a smaller child that is better for us as DD looked a bit lost in the maxi, oh and the maxi seat seemed to slope down and not support her legs which I think is why she liked the trek 8 better as it is more similart to the baby seat in that respect.
I would get your child to sit in both in the shop if possibe to see which they seem more comfy in.
There is not a great deal of difference price wise up here (no competition) but lots of the baby shops seem to have discounts on both the maxi and the trek8 so shop around.

We have the trek 8 and with delivery it cost us $280. The new maxi with AHR is a lot more expensive and similar to it. Thanks for the info about the anti-sub clip. Will be looking into that one because I was a bit worried about that bit. I know the path of the belt makes the trek 8 safe but the clip will make it safer. Oh and we never use the hood. It blocks my view although I haven't tried it on if I put his seat behind the drivers seat. I honestly couldn't be happier with this seat.
