My pregnancy
I had a dream about week after I conceived this baby, that I was pregnant, so I woke up with a start and did a pregnancy test around 5am in the morning. It was negative and I went back to bed feeling silly...we weren't trying to get pregnant, and I knew it would be too early to tell anyways.
For the next week or so I felt pretty off colour and I started getting a metallic taste in my mouth, so I did another test when DH was at work. I thought once again I was just being silly, but nope I got my BFP and was in shock!
I let it sink in for a few hours before I rang my DH (Gerry) and let him know, I couldn't wait until he got home...I think he was pretty shocked too.
Anyways, over the next few weeks I started feeling sicker and sicker and by about the time I was around 8 weeks my doctor sent me off for a scan to check for multiples and if my dates were correct as I felt like I was feeling movements already.
Turned out my dates were pretty much spot on...EDD by my LMP was 9th of August, and by the scan was the 8th and no multiples. However, the technician did let us know that there was bleeding around the sac, and that I should be taking it pretty easy.
Needless to say, I was scared by this information and pretty much stressed about it until we heard a heartbeat at around 15 weeks.
We had our morphology scan at 19 weeks and all was good. Gerry and I didn't find out the sex of our first child beforehand and we decided to leave this one as a surprise too.
Unfortunately, I had nausea and a lot of vomiting for almost my entire pregnancy...so everyone told me I was having a BOY.
So going by my scans, my due dates was 8/08/08 and we had my 40wk appointment booked in for that day. I think DH and I both were secretly hoping the baby would come on that special date...but what we wanted most of all was for baby to pick their own birth date, as I was induced with my little girl, Marie.
However, this was not to be.
The doctor's tested my blood pressure and it had increased dramatically from the last time it had been tested, plus I was swollen up everywhere and I had protein in my urine. So they said it was time for me to be induced again.
They booked us in for 8am the following morning, and sent us home. I think DH and I were kind of in shock, we hadn't really thought the baby would be coming that soon, I went 8 days over with Marie. We hadn't even picked a boy's name!
The Birth
We arrived just before 8am the next morning, and then the waiting began.
It was about 10:15am before the doctors got out of handover to come and rupture my membranes. After they did this I had a small gush of fluid and they said they would leave me for an hour to see if contractions would spontaneously start.
Unfortunately, nothing happened within the next hour or so, and it was around midday before they actually came back and started me on a drip to get things moving. From there on in, they were constantly monitoring bubs and I, and had difficulty getting the trace to stay on, so I ended up moving to the bed. Glad that I did this, because by this time I was feeling very tired and the tightenings were beginning.
My last labour, Marie was posterior and her head was flexed the wrong way, so all my contractions were felt in my back and I just couldn't cope. This labour they were all in the front of my stomach, and I felt much better coping with them. Even though they started coming fast and furious very quickly once the drip started.
Around 1:40 I started using the gas to help me through each contraction. I could still feel the pain, but coping was much easier. I was chanting in my head "There is no pain, There is no pain" and kept my eyes closed for the majority of the time and just breathed through them.
It was about then, that the midwife said, "Erm I think maybe you should take off your underwear, because I don't think they are going to stop your baby coming out!"
Getting closer to 2:30ish the contractions seemed to be on top of each other, and although I was still clinging to the gas, the pain was getting much more intense and I was softly moaning through them, and then suddenly I think I was screaming through them. The midwife suggested to me that I lay on my side as she wanted to check something; I said "I don't think so". But after the next contraction I managed to roll over, that’s when she said you are fully dilated.
Then I had the urge to push, and two pushes later the baby came diving out. Gerry looked down at the baby, and then came and whispered to me that we had a son. The midwives then lifted him into my arms.
A little while after, although, he was a little squeamish, Gerry actually cut his cord and then brought him back to my arms for a breastfeed and some baby gazing.
We named our son Oliver Michael. Both Gerry‘s and my father are both named Michael, so that was an easy choice for a middle name. Oliver was the name I liked throughout the whole pregnancy, but Gerry wasn't sure, but the night before he had come to me and said, I know you love Oliver, so if we have a boy that's what we will call him. Nothing like leaving it til the last minute ;)
